Footballer machines, ‘greatest league’ guff

356

I assume none of us knew Stuart Armstrong has been playing with a hernia problem? Stuart’s form has been below that of last season, but whereas others carrying an injury would raise the white flag, he’s made himself available to the manager.

Much was, therefore, said and written about him which was grossly unfair. As we know, footballers are not machines, even brilliant ones.

I know I’m not alone in being irritated by “the greatest league in the world” guff we so often have to endure, in particular from the (England and Wales) Premier League main broadcaster, Sky Sports. It was brought to my attention this morning that European Champions, Real Madrid, are three points closer to relegation than the top of the table.

Juventus are the only non-La Liga team to reach a Champions League final in the last four seasons, having done so twice. Even in current form, Real are one of the most dangerous teams in the history of the game, but the technical brilliance of La Liga is such that any vulnerabilities are exposed.

If only we were part of that guff to the south, but the game there is as relevant to football as pantomime is to the theatre (Oh yes it is). The game’s brilliance resides in Spain.

NEW CQN PODCAST OUT NOW FEATURING TOMMY SHERIDAN

A Celtic State of Mind presents its 30th instalment of insightful discussion around the culture of Celtic Football Club, the city of Glasgow, and fans of the reigning treble-winning Scottish champions.

Kevin Graham is joined by Scotty Alcroft to interview Scottish pro-independence politician, Tommy Sheridan, at The Penalty Spot in Glasgow.

The interview took place as part of A Celtic State of Mind’s first live event – Five-a-sides at The Penalty Spot – and, as such, there is some background noise (including mobile interference – apologies) from the audience.

The other voice you may hear throughout this episode is that of former Celtic striker, Frank McGarvey, who is a friend of Tommy’s, and who was also interviewed separately that day for a future show.

You are sure to enjoy Tommy’s eclectic input, as he discusses everything from Catalan independence to Coolio, with a constant undercurrent of that thing called Celtic.

I’ve just had a wee scroll through the pages of today’s article. Now, I rarely claim to be good at most things, however, I do think I’m a good judge of character.

Often when I read your posts mate I desperately wish that you were within distance so that I could kick your shins til you faint!

I simply can’t see you being guilty of what you’re supposed to have said.

I read your initial post as responding to the Garden of Eden dialogue. I did not read it initially as referring to the Kriss & Lisa issue but I can see how some may have reached that idea.

It would be a terrible thing to be accused of such callousness so I can understand your anger. You have made it clearer what your intention was. I would hope that people accept that and do not believe that they know better than you what you intended to say.

    ========================

I’ve been trying to follow this discussion from a base of sheer puzzlement at any connection between my original post on The Road Less Travelled and whatever it was Celtarella posted since it was removed.

I think I may have made the connection now from your post.

What struck me about what took place afterwards as I read the exchange was I’ve seen or been involved in discussions before where one party (or I) when talking about a ball was meaning a football, whereas the other party (usually the good lady) was talking of a ball of wool and we were both oblivious to each others meaning.

As the conversation develops more angst enters the frae as I’m no wondering how anyone else (or the good lady) can possibly argue that Tommy Gemmell could not strike a football with the force he could, whilst the other party (the good lady) wonders if there is enough of the ball left to finish the baby cardigan she is knitting.

Its talking at cross purposes (or cross stitching) and it usually takes both parties (or me and my good lady) to stand back, drop the ball and ask each other to describe exactly what ball we were talking about.

I can also see how past behaviour (see my post to BMCUW) has influenced the reader to delete, for Celterella has something of the night in his humour, but I’d advocate the same solution to both parties as in my post to BMCUW.

    Forgiveness on both sides .

It exists because we all make mistakes and without it we become anchored in the past.

And for those wanting to live a bit longer by living in the present

Some of the posts were only removed about ten minutes before I mentioned it. I only noticed due to PHILBHOY’s count me out post suddenly moving up a few places.

I got back from work just after 5pm today, and just caught the original deleted posts before PAUL67 removed them. The timeline of the posts in question didn’t match the alleged offence, but tbh there was no way I felt comfortable getting involved in such a sensitive subject.

I also congratulate SETTINGFREETHEBEARS for his courage in the above post. Gunga-din,etc. I hope we can all leave this now;meanwhile,my sincere condolences to POGMATHONYAHUN and his wife for their deeply-felt loss.

Was working til late and only skim read page 5 when eating my tea so picking up the pieces. I notice the previous thread is down 2 from when time was called on it. As you say Father Dougal called it on this type of thing.

  9. CELTARELLA, there has obviously been some confusion with one of your posts, hence pauls intervention hope this gets sorted.hh.

  10. Celtarella 9.27.

I don’t know you and presume you don’t know me.

I haven’t followed this particular conversation, so I can’t comment on this specifically.

However, you strike me as someone who is more than capable of defending their comments, whatever they may be.

Therefore,If you tell Paul 67, as you have, that he has picked up the wrong end of the stick then that, in my opinion, should not be doubted.

    I hope that makes sense.

    Hail Hail

Paddy Crerand left Celtic in 1962…yes 1962.

    Hunbelievable!

  14. Vale Bhoy –

But in the rules of the SMSM the most obvious description of him (rather than say ex European Cup winning Man Utd star) is ‘former Celt’!!! Grrrrrr

Off to bed. Angry. 2 more disruptive sleeps… ;-)

  15. SOAL

    Straw muncher!

    Big Packy

Cheers mate. It’s everyone who takes the time to contact their MSPs that should be applauded.

  16. Really enjoyed reading back over today’s blog. A good mixture of thought provoking input. The compliance officer will either confirm the game we buy into is toxic or have the courage to shine a light into the dark side of the game. A game that saw the establishment team pop it’s clogs ,millions of debt unpaid , Supreme Court cases , yet no one , not anyone, has been charged with bringing the game into disrepute. Thank feck for Res 12 . On other matters. McGinn ? I wouldn’t have a problem if we signed him , but we do have Kouassi . If Kouassi requires game time , let it be in a Celtic jersey . Broony needs some back up. HH

If I remember correctly a lot of the objections were because of his off field ‘ahem’ activities rather than his fitba abilities.

  19. Bada Bing (just before I go) – for the avoidance of doubt I honestly can’t remember the last time I bought a newspaper. The article I linked to had been brought to my attention.
