Footballer machines, ‘greatest league’ guff

356

I assume none of us knew Stuart Armstrong has been playing with a hernia problem? Stuart’s form has been below that of last season, but whereas others carrying an injury would raise the white flag, he’s made himself available to the manager.

Much was, therefore, said and written about him which was grossly unfair. As we know, footballers are not machines, even brilliant ones.

I know I’m not alone in being irritated by “the greatest league in the world” guff we so often have to endure, in particular from the (England and Wales) Premier League main broadcaster, Sky Sports. It was brought to my attention this morning that European Champions, Real Madrid, are three points closer to relegation than the top of the table.

Juventus are the only non-La Liga team to reach a Champions League final in the last four seasons, having done so twice. Even in current form, Real are one of the most dangerous teams in the history of the game, but the technical brilliance of La Liga is such that any vulnerabilities are exposed.

If only we were part of that guff to the south, but the game there is as relevant to football as pantomime is to the theatre (Oh yes it is). The game’s brilliance resides in Spain.

NEW CQN PODCAST OUT NOW FEATURING TOMMY SHERIDAN

A Celtic State of Mind presents its 30th instalment of insightful discussion around the culture of Celtic Football Club, the city of Glasgow, and fans of the reigning treble-winning Scottish champions.

Kevin Graham is joined by Scotty Alcroft to interview Scottish pro-independence politician, Tommy Sheridan, at The Penalty Spot in Glasgow.

The interview took place as part of A Celtic State of Mind’s first live event – Five-a-sides at The Penalty Spot – and, as such, there is some background noise (including mobile interference – apologies) from the audience.

The other voice you may hear throughout this episode is that of former Celtic striker, Frank McGarvey, who is a friend of Tommy’s, and who was also interviewed separately that day for a future show.

You are sure to enjoy Tommy’s eclectic input, as he discusses everything from Catalan independence to Coolio, with a constant undercurrent of that thing called Celtic.

A laugh……..a laugh you say…….it’s the most serious song what I have ever wrote…..

  2. In a Scott Allen type swoop Celtic PLC should offer double for Greg docherty and immediately loan him out to Aberdeen.

  3. I’ll be honest here…….id find it hard fitting the name Docherty into my Krisstoffer Ajer song……ah mean……whit rhymes wi Docherty?

The CQN article on newspaper circulation is instructive.

The DR falling below 140k sales is staggering.

Consider this if you will – If our average home attendance over the last 20 years trended in line with their sales, we now would be playing in front of less than 11,000 fans.

I’ve opined on here previously that this rag will fold by 2025.

Now changed my view. Five years from now it will be gone.

When it goes below 120k it won’t be a sustainable business.

They’ll fall like dominoes. I suspect the order will be ET, Scotsman, DR, Herald.

BTW – if the guy down the street routinely insulted, and lied about, our club publicly, it would be illogical to then go onto a website he owned and give him revenue!

I often disagree with the tone of Magarella’s posts, but on this occasion, in my mind, there was no connection between his comment on original sin and the tragedy of the Commons’ and others in a similar situation.

  10. The need for John McGinn in Cellic’s midfield

is cause, Broony is too auld tae dae the required shift

and cause, we’ll need some steel as ither teams are tooling up.

But, is that really the point ?

Ah don’t think Brendan has the requisite cojones fur the

Cellic dug oot, if he did have, well, it stands to reason that

those requisite cojones would be reflected, through Brendan

    onto the pitch, like….?

    Mr Stein

    Mr McNeill

    Mr Hay

    Mr Jansen

    Mr O’Neill

    Mr Lennon

    all did.

What would be the point in, bringing in, John McGinn

and playing him next to an invisible man, like, McGregor ?

Ye see, imho, every gemme that Brendan starts wi, McGregor

well, Cellic are playing wi ten men. Until Brendan gets that,

he’ll go down the same road that, Tommy Burns(RIP) went

down, with his persistance in picking, Peter Grant.

How many midfield battles did we won when, according to

the deceitful, laptop loyal, Celtic’s midfield warhorse, Peter Grant

was in the team ? How many potential trophies did the Maestro

miss out on, because, Celtic played wi a man short, in the midfield

engine room, for 13 years ?

Sometimes, the wrong question gets asked because, fholk don’t want

    to rake over the coals.

Anywye,………as has been mentioned previously, maybe, jist maybe

Celtic supporters, in all innocence, are being played by, the very last

fholk that they would suspect, would play them.

    Always expect, the unexpected.

It now looks like, the thought of, forgiveness, is going to be stamped

deep into your psyche, to soften you all up, for the day that the white

flag will be hoisted, and you’ll all be taken back to school by,

the hand of the Mandarin’s, who’ve taken you all away down the

yellow brick road, far away from the ticking clock, that has now

stopped ticking and, the compendium of mind games has ran

out of road, the white doves have been released and, ach efff it…..

to cut a long story short,…..

“The Game, The Game Is Over,…..The Rebel’s Have Gone!”

    Guid luck Celts.

    ……Oot.

  11. No deleted yit ?

    Austerity ?

Canny fun the bushy tail clippers ?

    Accepted intae the clique ?

    ……….Oot.

  12. Kris Commons is one of the best value signings in the last 30yrs. He made a major contribution during his time here .

64 goals from midfield in a 147 games, great return by any standards.

His strop at being subbed during RD era echoed my feelings at that time. He was our biggest goal threat. RD’s substitutions were baffling at times. Some said it was disrespectful to his manager and teammates. To me it showed KC cared and was frustrated as a lot of fans were at the time.

    KC the pundit?

He’s only been doing it for two minutes, I’ll wait to see how that pans out before writing him off as another Andy Walker.

    All imo of course.

Sorry for not checking in much recently boys, but your part-resident Ross County supporter has been pre-occupied with personal stuff.

On a more light-hearted note however, I’m in Barbados with a car for the next 3 days….then home to Bonnie Scotland. (Dingwall and north of there.)

    Any advice?

    (Apart from f-off ya aerosol.)

  14. Alasdair MacLean on

I’m four hours behind by the way. And just about to shut down. Drinking the best of duty-free whisky in coffee. OK – no the best whisky..GlenMorange “The Tayne”..the best in my range. Feeling nilhillistic. Did I spell that correctly?

  15. Alasdair MacLean on

    Anyway, ya reprobates.

    Give over ffs.

Anyone would think you supported Ross County.

    Please think about that.

Aye, don’t try driving back to Dingwall from Barbados ;-)

Apparently the games used to be shown in The Coach House which has relocated and is now called the Beach House Restaurant but the do not show the games.

The Barbados CSC seems to have disappeared. Ross County game is not on the telly, surprisingly it is the Fraserbugh v sevco game.

    PogMaHonYaHun…..,

    Cheers!

I’ll be indiscrete here…but I’m staying on Rockley area south coast.

I’ve persuaded my after 2 days that things are fine with my driving…and yesterday proved that it’s much more real up the West Coast..

But if there are any CQNrs in Barbados…

I’d like to share a rum punch with them!

So, Kitalba, McJay etc….and how many others?

I would like to thank you.

From a personal point of view….I’ve read bits which make me think that CelticFirst might not be still alive.

    I loved his contributions and I’m afraid I have a couple I regret…

    Can anyone help there?

If he is gone….Even if I could speak to someone who knew him.

Paul’s got my contact stuff…and ACGR / BMCR.

Funny thing is that when I posted the link to forgiveness under the intro ” If you want to live longer” it was you and improving your health I was thinking about.

    Your post vindicates my thinking.

    Barbados eh? Lucky bassa.

Haven’t visited since Feb 2012. In fact was having a drink in Casuarina Bar with another Tim when news came through Rangers had gone into administration.

Sunk a few rum punches that day.

You will probably drive over to Bathsheba if you have the car. There is or was a restaurant there – Bonitos? that did a good Bajan Buffet.

Friday night is the fish fry at Oistins. If you visit, park and walk towards the fish fry area and see a haze, you will quickly realise it’s not caused by frying the fish as you start to float towards the bright lights on the unicorns horns.

The Boatyard just outside Bridgetown in airport direction is a good day out. Check the paths made from bricks made in Calder and elsewhere here. Ballast from the sugar trading ships.

If you have time and never done it before try Tiami cruise and swim with the turtles. Quite uplifting without the Oistin haze.
