Football’s ability to destroy the finest spreadsheets

492

I watched Liverpool lose their fifth consecutive home game in the EPL last night.  One of the best teams in Europe over the last four years, which famously benefits from fan motivation, sit seventh in the table and out of a European spot for next season.

Even on current form, Liverpool would destroy Celtic, but the parallels in the two clubs decline are clear.  Virgil van Dijk’s injury enforced absence at Anfield had as big an impact on Liverpool as Fraser Forster’s loss to Celtic.  Both sides lost significant numbers through injury and, if anything, Celtic fans have a greater reputation for encouraging their team than Liverpool’s.

Jurgen Klopp, the urbane football intellectual, looks lost.  We see unflattering bouts of temper as he struggles to understand where his Midas Touch went.  Jurgen is among the game’s very best; Neil Lennon should take comfort that what happened to him can happen to anyone.

You and I have often said that a team operating at 90% is unrecognisable from the same players at full tilt.  When one or two things go wrong at the margins, an entire edifice can crumble.  Watching Liverpool also suffer does not sweeten the pill, but it is a lesson that football can destroy even the finest spreadsheets.

  1. Morning David, it does indeed seem like there has been a distinct lack of planning by the board.

PHILBOY I thought that was a wonderful post last night, here’s to you and your family, Hail hail!

  5. A John Kennedy permanent appointment fills me with dread.

I’m sure John is a very nice competent coach with a great knowledge of Celtic and football in general.

However he us not what we require at this time for our rebuild.

We need a name that is well know on these Islands and beyond.

A name that clubs will feel confident in loaning their best young talent to.

A name that any prospective players will respect.

A name that is self confident and media savy.

A name that will stand up for Celtic regardless who or what they opposes us.

A name that will not be ” bullied ,

John Kennedy’s time may well come, but not now.

    HH.

  6. Morning! Big Jimmy, get back posting the jokes m8 , as David 66 , said wont be long now before we get back to the pubs ! ( hopefully)

    KEEP THE FAITH

  8. !!Bada Bing!! on

GP- correct, he needs to get out of CP for his own development, this is not the time for a novice appointment.

  9. The comments from the Justice Secretary about yesterday’s clear Covid infractions were mealy-mouthed claptrap. The thought occurred to me that , perhaps, Nippy Sturgeon might have a comment from the pulpit tomorrow. But the thought soon passed as its unlikely she will remember what happened 2 days previously.

  10. Love Celtic – total rollercoaster over the years but really lucky i was influenced *cough* to support them. Even then i fell in love my first game. 🍀

In the life generally I try to be good, to be kind, to have emotional intelligence hopefully meaning i compliment people in my life rather than negatively affect them. With that hatred and anger are types of emotions and feelings I try to avoid………..but, I f%$&ing hate them.

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday, hopefully we secure victory today. Away out for a cycle HH 🍀

  11. Ps was thinking if growing up anywhere else in the World, would i have witnessed any such cheating as allowed to rangers (RIP) and sevco?

    Nope.

  12. Saturday 7th March 1981

I received a most welcome note tonight from Bernie, my sister. old Bernie. I love her and think she’s the greatest.

I am now convinced that the authorities intend to implement strict isolation soon, as I am having trouble in seeing my solicitor. I hope I’m wrong about the isolation, but we’ll see.

It’s only that I’d like to remain with the boys for as long as possible for many reasons. If I’m isolated, I will simply conquer it.

A priest was in today, somewhat pleasant, and told me about Brendan O Cathaoir’s article in The Irish Times during the week, which I saw. We had a bit of discussion on certain points, which, of course, were to him contentious. He was cordial in his own practised way, purely tactical, of course, and at the same time he was most likely boiling over inside, thinking of the reference to this week’s AP/RN (February 28th issue) calling him a collaborating middle-class nationalist, or appropriate words to that effect.

He is too, says I, and I sympathise with those unfortunate sons of God who find themselves battling against the poverty, disease, corruption, death and inhumanities of the missions…

I am 61 kgs today, going down. I’m not troubled by hunger pangs, nor paranoiac about anything pertaining to food, but, by God, the food has improved here. I thought I noticed that during the last hunger-strike. Well, there is a lot at stake here.

I got the Irish News today, but there’s nothing in it, that’s why I got it.

I’m looking forward to seeing the comrades at Mass tomorrow, all the younger looking faces, minus the beards, moustaches, long rambling untamed hair matted in thick clumps.

One thing is sure, that awful stage, of the piercing or glazed eyes, the tell-tale sign of the rigours of torture, won’t be gone – if it is ever removed. I wonder is it even conceivable that it could be erased from the mind?

We got a new comrade during the week. Isn’t it inspiring the comrades who keep joining us? I read what Jennifer said in court. (On being sentenced, Jennifer McCann said: ‘I am a Republican prisoner of war and at the moment my comrade Bobby Sands is on hunger-strike to defend my rights as a political prisoner.’) I was touched and proud, she is my comrade.

I’ve been thinking of Mary Doyle and Ellen McGuigan and all the rest of the girls in Armagh. How can I forget them?

The Screws are staring at me perplexed. Many of them hope (if their eyes tell the truth) that I will die. If need be, I’ll oblige them, but my God they are fools. Oscar Wilde did not do justice to them for I believe they are lower than even he thought. And I may add there is only one thing lower than a Screw and that is a Governor. And in my experience the higher one goes up that disgusting ladder they call rank, or position, the lower one gets…

It’s raining. I’m not cold, my spirits are well, and I’m still getting some smokes — decadence, well sort of, but who’s perfect. Bad for your health. Mar dheas anois, Oíche Mhaith.

  13. onenightinlisbon on

John Kennedy? If that’s the level of ambition the board have then we had better get used to watching the zombies celebrate. If they think a few wins when they don’t matter is good enough to give him the job on a permanent basis then we are totally gubbed. Nothing would surprise me about these arses.

  14. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Majestic Hartson – cheers.

Lilley famously pontificated at a Conservative Party Conference (complete with prop) of having a little list of those claiming benefits that he would “root out”.

Leeching and scrounging were the common buzzwords of the day.

Lilley has been a fully fledged member of the political classes for c.40 years.

    Clearly doesn’t do irony?

  15. fairhill bhoy on

Maybe we should take a breath and wait and see how the chips fall before we give up on our next manager so quickly.

Whoever it turns out to be

  16. onenightinlisbon on

Although the MSM will be doing their level best to tell us that Kennedy is a bright young prospect and that we should be giving him the opportunity to develop his skills and talents fully as Celtic manager. The same guys who were telling us we should be sticking with Lennon as we fell further and further behind Sevco,

FAIRHILL BHOY on 7TH MARCH 2021 10:40 AM

I don’t think anyone is giving up on our next manager, just expressing or opinions – how many would really be happy with Kennedy?

    WEEBOBBYCOLLINS on 7TH MARCH 2021 10:42 AM

Not starting anything. Do you really think that appointing him would be a good idea?

As I have stated on here many times before, we all want the best for Celtic, don’t we?

  19. onenightinlisbon on

Appointing kennedy would be as big a mistake as appointing Lennon after the Scottish cup final. Would send a message to everyone about our level of ambition but if you are happy with that then that’s up to you.

  21. Olivia, who has just finished her breakfast in bed says thank you for the lovely posts!

A wee bit emotional reading back, so a big thanks too, from my good lady and me.

God bless all who post here.

ONENIGHTINLISBON-I wouldn’t be happy either.I just think it’s wasted energy moaning about something that hasn’t happened yet.I don’t think he will be offered the job anyway. Our board wouldn’t be that stupid.

    Or would they?

I agree, I was only responding to the comment about “speculation” but the possibility of him being offered the job should be discussed on a Celtic blog shouldn’t it?

    Taken too soon.
