Football’s political clout not as high as rugby’s

305

With Coronavirus cases rising across Scotland, those in the game will be anxious about their anticipated plans for some fans to be in attendance at games this weekend.  Ross County hope to have around 500 at their game against Celtic on Saturday, two weeks after the Scottish Government allowed rugby to run similar tests.

There are many things we need to learn.  How long will it take to process fans entering a stadium and which club has the most effective method?  We need to know how fans who have travelled for hours will react when told their temperature is too high to allow entry.  Will fans observe social distancing and how safely can this be enforced by stewarding?

The need for information is great and one iteration of learning will not be enough.  When safe, we should be testing often.

Allowing test events for a few hundred fans at open air football games has to be among the safest activities available in the country.  There is zero scientific reason for preventing them and many valid reasons to hold them, but this is all about signals and how to effectively govern the population.  Football is a political football (sorry).  It does not have the political clout of the drinks industry, or even rugby, for that matter, or some would have been watching football from the safe outdoors weeks ago.

The important thing is that you get to eat it with your unwashed hands.

No shortage of CoViD19 cannon fodder in the UK now.

As for a vaccine I think it will be at least 6 months at least before one is available.

Plus it will probably only generate partial coverage.

However as they say in Tesco — every little helps.

    ——————–

Sadly, you’re right about increasing numbers just now.

It is inevitable – more contact between people when there is a virus in the community leads to more spread. We ‘simply’ need to minimise the spread – particularly to those most likely to be adversely impacted, which means the whole community really must be encouraged make the effort – until a vaccine is available.

Unlikely that any vaccine will be 100% effective in 100% of people – they never are, they same way that the virus doesn’t have an impact on 100% of the population.

However, as you rightly say – every little does indeed help.

On a related matter – I’m sure many of us have saw a few opinions being expressed about the veracity of the information being provided about the coronavirus. In fact, there were leaflets on all the car windscreens in the car-park of Monklands Hospital last week from a group called something along the lines of “March on Hollyrood” (I won’t waste my time looking them up).

Their leaflets had a number of statements expressed as “FACT – …” – in one way it made me chuckle since that’s a joke technique on here when we know what we are posting is nonsense. However – the leaflet actually made me angry – especially planted on cars about 100 yards from the Regional Infectious Diseases Unit where many of the staff supported many patients through their last breaths only very recently. The effect and spread of the disease during April / May were in direct contrast with the “FACTS” on the leaflet, many of which were demonstrably untrue (they were possibly “alternative FACTS” in the language of Kellyanne Conway).

Anyway – Ralph Malph over on e-Tims today has a good suggestion to those who are peddling the ‘Covid-is-a-big-hoax’ line (and such people are out there):

“…By the way, one or two replies to the diary yesterday implied that the Coronavirus is a hoax, and we are all wearing masks because it’s all a big conspiracy…

…There is a plague out there that is killing people. And anyone who thinks otherwise should volunteer to change the bed linen in a covid ward, because they are clearly safe and everybody in there is just lollygagging to avoid doing a hard days work down the pit….”

Once the technology and systems for home working have been honed to perfection what’s to stop employers outsourcing the jobs to developing countries with lower wage costs?

  6. i’ve never understood the attraction of eating at the football unless is it easy to carry and eat quickly. You want to watch the game and jump about surely? i do try to get a pie at half time but that is due to my current situation where i fy in early for the game and have breakfast and then pints. By 3.45 i need something quick. When i stayed in Scotland, i would have had lunch before the game so no need to eat between 3pm and 5pm

the Spurs figures seem to reflect the Londoners who go along to the bigger stadiums now. More like a US sports day out with all the trimmings. Would be surprised if Manchester, Liverpool , Glasgow would go that way.

On the other hand, Spurs pint pouring system is brilliant; push the plastic tumbler down into a slot to fill through a non return valve (bit like blowing up a lilo). Pint filled in 2 secs.

I can’t see any reason why you can’t get a couple of pints at a game now. If only served for an hour before the game and at half time – how pished can you get?

They could come up with some handstamping/credit card/stewarding solution to make sure no-one gets a skin full.

People who are drunk at the game get drunk outside first or sneak in a bottle of spirits

Seen plenty of drunk heads at rugby where they serve from early and all through the game but we don’t need to go that far

In summary: i wants a couple of pints not chicken harissa with a tofu and beetroot side !

Outsourcing: depends on the skills sets in each country and tax laws etc. Tyranny of timezones. E.g., my industry is office based but more experience is in Ireland plus tax laws plus tax rate. Otherwise , for sure we would be under threat big time

    What next regarding CoViD19?

Well the first thing to do in a CV outbreak — treat it as CV and not flu.

The whole focus by the medical establishment in the UK was flu so we were on the back foot from the off.

Then we have the passive state — self isolation is now the stock phrase.

What ever happened to isolation wards and fever hospitals.

Then there was / still is a general reluctance to test — Sturgeon had 6 weeks when the outbreak was falling in June and July and did nothing. No community / sample testing to understand the asymptomatic angle and no active quarantining when the holidays were in full swing.

We are now reaping what she sowed.

You only have to see the confusion over masks — now they are essential.

Where was the national effort to make masks at the start of the outbreak — TV shows and the like.

Too many think we can beat CoViD19 on the cheap.

Look at the money that was spent to allow people to sit in the house.

Compare and contrast with the money spent to improve our medical infrastructure.

An awful lot less and most of that was on sweetheart PPE deals to Del Boy et al.

CoViD19 has been brutal at exposing the quality of our current civilisation.

We really are living in a Potemkin village and the cracks are getting wider.

Something has to change — not sure it will be for the better.

The damages to CG et al will probably be more than they could have hoped to make out of sevco in their wildest dreams.

The irony being that a malicious or vengeful prosecution by a few rogue cops and lawyers is going to result in more cost to the taxpayer to add to that defrauded by the original huns.

One problem I have noticed is that the more open – minded guys don`t seem to have the stamina of the Negatrons and eventually quit or, at least , have a break ( see Turkebhoy today).

Anyway, hopefully the nearness of our Ross County game will help concentrate the collective mind on matters Celtic. Our Team.

    Cheerio for now.

  25. No way do i want to put a damper on the future, but as the blog has been so candid today, It should be mentioned that vaccine testing is generally on fit healthy young adults.

As far as I am aware no vulnerable groups have participated in trials.
