Football’s political clout not as high as rugby’s

305

With Coronavirus cases rising across Scotland, those in the game will be anxious about their anticipated plans for some fans to be in attendance at games this weekend.  Ross County hope to have around 500 at their game against Celtic on Saturday, two weeks after the Scottish Government allowed rugby to run similar tests.

There are many things we need to learn.  How long will it take to process fans entering a stadium and which club has the most effective method?  We need to know how fans who have travelled for hours will react when told their temperature is too high to allow entry.  Will fans observe social distancing and how safely can this be enforced by stewarding?

The need for information is great and one iteration of learning will not be enough.  When safe, we should be testing often.

Allowing test events for a few hundred fans at open air football games has to be among the safest activities available in the country.  There is zero scientific reason for preventing them and many valid reasons to hold them, but this is all about signals and how to effectively govern the population.  Football is a political football (sorry).  It does not have the political clout of the drinks industry, or even rugby, for that matter, or some would have been watching football from the safe outdoors weeks ago.

Right another crazy day of meetings about not having meetings ahead.

    —————————————————

Had a chuckle at that one. My boss, who is an IT person (i’m not), said on a dept Teams call yesterday that if we don’t get back in the office next week. she will set up a regular Teams meeting for us to escape Teams meetings! At lunchtime!!

    She doesn’t do irony

    Good post on testing process.

pity the meeja don’t teach patience.i hear on r4 the Oxford trial has stopped due to reaction.

    ———

Yup – saw that. That illustrates the reasons for doing the trials in the staged way. Later stages all about picking up potential unknown adverse reactions that may occur in some groups of people who have similar characteristics (age, genes, pregnancy status, comirbidities, etc.).

Underlying cause of this patient’s reaction will be thoroughly investigated. Outcome usually would be either

    – reaction found to be unrelated to the vaccine (e.g., pre-existing illness) in which case trial re-starts as-is, or…

    – reaction is related / that would usually result in an additional exclusion criteria being added to ensure people with similar characteristics don’t get the vaccine, or are monitored more closely

  3. Good morning friends from a dry but very blustery East Kilbride.

Just 3 more sleeps till we try, somehow, to get to see the Champions play. Anticipating a lower than usual number of votes for the ole POTY thing ;-)

  4. The hand of God on

Hope all of our players return unscathed from international duty hopefully Eddy will be up to speed and good to go on Saturday after his scoring exploits with the French under21 side .

  5. Good morning from a dull North Staffs – let me get this right

If you subscribe to Sky you would expect all Celtic away games to be broadcast – so why not this Saturday. But you can buy a stream from RC. Fleecing our support again.

I see the DU player who was accused of abusing a taxi driver a d was under investigation had picked up an ankle injury keeping him out of the next few games – I smell bull 💩

  6. Timbhoy2,

There’s a PPV option via Ross County’s site.

    £15.

That’s what I plan. Hope they have built a bigger server.

  7. The whole issue regarding CoViD19 is that it cuts through the bull / the flannel / the news management / the total b*ll*cks that is modern politics and unfortunately modern life.

The excuse level has been turned up to 11 but the virus still shines a powerful light into the workings of the world — and what it has highlighted shows that we are wreck and about to collapse.

Politics now is based on message and perception — reality was second up until now.

But yet they continue to spin / massage the truth — to deliver a huge gap between what our eyes see and our ears tell us.

The whole vaccine fairy story had nothing to do with the huge efforts being put in globally to move things forward — everybody’s back catalogues being rummaged to find anything useful — it was about a good news story to offer hope for the future in the face of widespread government and societal failure in dealing with the outbreak.

We need good news to keep us going.

The vaccine stories were on the Grid for July.

They will be replaced by something else to take our mind off it and the negative impact of failure.

Shadow hospitals were the future once — where are they now?

They still have a story to tell but it doesn’t fit into a soundbite.

    So it will go unheard.

  9. MadMitch,

You ever read Robert Shiller and ‘narrative economics’?

Stories matter and stories shape people’s behaviours.

I think so much of what’s around is, is driven by that.

    It’s a sobering read.

  10. Bada,

I think the ‘injury’ stories will hide a few COVID-related transgressions this season, for fear of Nichola’s red card.

Pity Boli was allowed the same injury excuse.

Not much of a reader — my loss.

Doubly so in that when I have put in the effort you do learn lots.

In my defence I have managed to read 30% of Atlas Shrugged.

It told me that AR was a shameless slapper and that right wing fairy stories that wished away FDR / The New Deal / CA / The Welfare State / Post war settlement would have started to gain an audience in the late 50’s amongst the true believers.

For the record it was just about unreadable — Mills and Boon level political and economic analysis.

Interesting to translate her big man theory — oo’er Matron is appropriate — into the present day with Amazon / Apple / Facebook / Google / Tesla where first movers with messiah complexes and good lawyers have hoovered up billions on the back of vapourware and shameless hype

50’s = she wrote about it.

21st Century = it seems to be happening.

Where are the Trust busters we need?

  12. I think I’ve got one of the covid 19 symptoms – the label said “juicy red berries and hints of liquorice and spice” Just tasted like red wine to me.😜

  13. MadMitch,

I do a bit of work with VCs….shameless feckers pumping in millions on future bets for addressable markets that you never need to deliver and a portfolio where an 80% fail rate can still make a fund profitable with a couple of mythical unicorns in the making…

Now that’s narrative economics gone mad….

  14. Subscribing to Sky (which I don’t) never came with a guarantee that they would show every Celtic away game (or every away Sevco game for that matter). But invariably they did and as the deal was shared with BT then I can’t rem, ember the last time there was no live coverage of a Celtic domestic away game. In fact, Sky aren’t showing ANY Scottish football this weekend so we have a 6 game Saturday 3pm Premiership card. I wonder if that’s due to the fact that the English Premier league starts this weekend so they want all attention on that?

Like all Scottish premiership sides, Ross County have the option of showing coverage of their home games. Celtic do this, of course, as the Virtual Season Ticket but I don’t know which, if any of the other teams offer the same degree of coverage. This Saturday, the home teams are Aberdeen, Livingston, Motherwell, Sevco, Ross County and St Mirren. If I were of a mind to want to watch a live game I’m not sure which of those 6 would be an option.

Ross County are offering a pay per view option for £15. I’m almost certain that they are doing this in the hope of a large percentage of Celtic fans subscribing rather than just looking after their own. But £15 would be a lot to shell out without some sort of reassurance around the standard of the broadcast (is it Ross County TV or is it some sort of access to, say, Sky/BBC type?)

I think we then play St Mirren next Wednesday night at Love Street. That was originally scheduled for Sky but I don’t think the rearranged game is.

I wouldn’t be relying too much on a worthwhile vaccine being available.

I think the best bet is to do what you can to reduce the viral load you get if you come into contact with an infected person in the hope that the ensuing infection is mild.

So where possible physical distancing, basic personal hygiene and a modicum of common sense.

Was saying to WeeBGFC last night, having finally taken the plunge and dumped SKY about three years ago, I know could not fathom paying money to listen to the boring, droning voice of the extremely uninsightful Andy Walker.

His razor sharp comments are along the lines – “Look, he kicks the ball – and you can see, the ball goes past the post” – glad he is there to provide such a deep understanding of the game.

RS — I have heard about some of his work but not remembered his name.

Like his style though vs bubbles — tulips / railways / bitcoin / Tesla.

AW has single-handedly taken millions sorry billions off the value of Scottish football with his game analysis — all forced / partial / slanted to do both us a club and the game in general down.

No joy / no energy / no insight — he is a personality black hole draining the life out of Scottish football.

Fits in well with SKY because they are phoning it in.

The contrast with their style in the EPL is eye opening to say the least.

That’s all bang-on advice Ernie. People need to realise the virus is out there – taking the steps you mention help slow spread and lessen impact.

Another tip – anecdotal only, but makes sense I think – use First Defence nasal spray. It may help if the virus is in your nose (it basically helps flush out the cold virus before it gets in your system – the hope is it can help do the same with other viruses that enter via the nose). Aim is to avoid the virus getting to the back of your throat and then down into your lungs – that’s the main route of infection (alongside the eyes).

Unfortunately Knightswood, where 3 of my 4 children live, has become a hotbed for Covid19 since the schools resumed. My grandchildren’s school Saint Ninians, Blairdardie primary, Knightswood secondary, Corpus Christi primary and Saint Thomas Aquinas secondary, have all reported cases of virus infection in the past fortnight. I fear that schools and pubs were opened too early. Can’t see how things will improve soon. Keep well ma auld mucker.
