For as long as Celtic’s history is written, these days will live in legend

Queens Park (twice) Vale of Leven, Rangers (twice) and Aberdeen have all won the Scottish Cup three consecutive seasons.  The latter were the last, in 1984.  Celtic have won the old trophy 38 times, more than any others, but have never won the Cup three time in-a-row.

They successfully retained the Cup only eight times, the first time in 1901, when they beat Queens Park in the final, having despatched Rangers in the previous final.  It looked good for three-in-a-row the following season, when Celtic faced Hearts in the final, but despite goals from McOustra, Quinn and McMahon, Hearts scored four and the trophy went to Edinburgh.

The record could then have been put right in 1909.  Celtic got the better of Hearts in the 1907 final, and St Mirren a year later, but 1909 was the year the Cup was withheld after a riot, a fire and many injured Celtic and Rangers fans.

Celtic dominated the Scottish Cup in this era.  Dundee won the Cup in 1910, the only side apart from Celtic who won it between 1906 and 1913.  And without wanting to write too much about them getting the better of us, it was Hearts, again, who in 1913 stopped Celtic, after successes against Hamilton and Clyde in the two previous finals.  That loss to Hearts also cost Celtic four-in-a-row, as they won the trophy again in 1914.

Fans in this era would have grown used to retaining the Scottish Cup, but it would be an incredible 60 years before Celtic would do so again.  Celtic beat Rangers in 1971 and Hibs in 1972, but lost 3-2 to Rangers in 1973’s Centenary Scottish Cup Final.  That loss actually denied Celtic five Cup wins in-a-row, as they beat Dundee United in the 1974 final and oldco Airdrie in 1975 (my first Scottish Cup Final).  The 1976 attempt at three-in-a-row ended at Fir Park, when Motherwell won their third round tie.

The closest we came to three-in-a-row was 1990.  Having beat Dundee United in our own Centenary Season Cup Final in 1988, we denied Rangers a treble to beat them in the 1989 Final.  Celtic had a miserable 1989-90 season, but a fourth round win over Rangers cleared the way for a run to Hampden and Aberdeen.  90 minutes and extra time came and went without a goal.  18 penalties could not separate the teams, but after Anton Rogan missed Celtic’s 10th kick, Aberdeen scored to win.

Martin O’Neill’s Celtic won the cup in their imperious 2003-04 season, with Henrik Larsson bidding farewell by despatching Dunfermline, then Martin bid farewell after a far-from imperious 2004-05 season with a Cup Final win over Dunfermline.

Celtic’s next opportunity to win three consecutive Scottish Cups came in 2006, but, alas Roy Keane and Du Wei’s debut, also the latter’s final game, is remembered warmly by Clyde fans.  Which brings us to tomorrow.  After completing the Invincible Treble by beating Aberdeen in the 2017 Final, Celtic achieved the Double Treble last season when they overcame Motherwell in the Final.

In our long and illustrious history, on only eight occasions have we retained the Scottish Cup and we have never achieved what will be attempted tomorrow.  If it helps you contextualise how much an achievement the Treble Treble would be, the Scottish Cup treble alone has been an as yet impossible task.

For as long as Celtic’s history is written, these days will live in legend.  Let’s make it happen.

No pressure now, Celtic.

  1. Anybody wanna explain the hold this toxic poster has on the place? I’m at a loss. The unhinged rants, the keyboard hardman antics, the swearies, the anger, the constant bloody anger and good folk here molly cuddle and endorse the behaviour as alright. And round and round we go. He flounces, he leaves, he’s back etc etc.

Me today. You tomorrow, it always follows the same pattern – Angrily arrives, has a row with someone, infamy infamy…gives same speech about standing his ground in an imaginery row, bombards the board with posts galore to overcompensate, reacts, gets angry, repeat and rinse.

You reap what you sew folks. Toxic individual…

Take Moyes in a Minute, Youth developer, work with big budget, small budget, doesn’t suffer fools (refs media), much like Steve Clarke without the great apprenticeships. I would take him over the former Nuremberg manager and AVB. Rafa wont come and the rest are just crazy talk.

My only issue with Davie is style of play, will it be back to WGS with big guys and boring football?

How many other managers have fell on the Manu sword since the nearly man? Bad choice knocked his confidence after the toffees, Davie will do for me.

  7. Not once has James Forrest come on to the blog and attacked any poster, he responds and reacts, not the way I and many others would but he never starts the aggro, today is the perfect example, he responded badly I will have to say, I defy any poster to show the blog where he arrives angrily and attacks a poster.

Maybe if posters who don’t like what he says should not aggravate matters by getting their pathetic childish digs in first, now there’s a thought.

    Manners and respect costs nothing.

James Forrest’s opinion is as valid as anyone else’s on here but there seems to be a few posters who take exception to his style, honesty whatever you want to call it. But it irks me that he seems to evoke what can only be called cyber nastiness. Thought we were a club open to all?

You are lying if you claim otherwise. Not exaggerating, you are lying.

I’ve told you before to simply ignore me and refrain from responding or posting on me, but you, like your pal, can’t help yourself. What is I do to you people that gets you like this?

You’re not getting a response in the future either, but this one time I’m making an exception because you don’t get to lie about me and think that’ll pass.

  13. Without reading the link to the Economist article, most of us know that, at most clubs, managers come and go without making much of a difference. Those that are lucky enough to achieve something of note will find job offers for the next 10-15 years on the back of it. The EPL relegation/promotion merry go round being the best example of that. For twenty years, the same guys got the jobs time after time. Get promotion to the EPL or/and avoid relegation from it. Then get sacked.

At the other end, Barcelona have had four managers since Pep Guardiola and are reigning it supreme regardless.

Since Vicente de Bosque won 2 La Ligas, 1 Supercopa de España, 2 UEFA Champions League, 1 UEFA Super Cup and 1 Intercontinental Cup and left in 2003, Madrid have changed their manager 16 TIMES!!!! 16 managers yet the trophies keep stacking up.

As noted above, most managers who win big do it on the back of the stars aligning for them for a short, glorious period. Hardly any can ever recreate that again unless it is open cheque book season.

Having given it a great deal of thought recently, Moyes, Benitez, AVB, Dave Beckham etc, even if they were all up for it, I would give the job to Neil Lennon, come on, we owe him big time. My main concern about Neil is that the huns all want him as our manager, and by extension with Neil as our manager I think all the games against them next season will be dog fights. So bring it on – dog fights with the huns, if that’s the price we have to pay then lets pay it, Neil’s a good man to have on your side in a dog fight. As for all the spoiled brats in our support who simply want it all now regardless of what’s what, who cares about them.

It’s probably a parody, but it’s such a perfect one because it nails the nuttiness beautifully.

Ibrox Noise is going off its nut today because a Hibs player posted a picture of a tackle on one of their midfielders on Instagram. This is the site that’s accusing Celtic fans of doing over Graham Dorrans.

If I fell over Graham Dorrans I wouldn’t know that I had fallen over Graham Dorrans!

First time posting in ages, Good to see our James back and where GFTB?

Treble Treble on tomorrow, eyes down for the house and the new manager will be there to shout us on.

How can people say they would rather have Lenny than Moyes? mental talk.

Moyes had that Everton team purring with zero money for years in ” the bestestestest league in the universe” and one bad move in Manchester ruined him, so I would take him over Lenny, Neil had a chance to really up his game this time round and he hasn’t, the team were playing poorly under the other guy before he took over and they are playing even more poorly now, body language is everything, the players don’t just look tired, they look checked out as a whole, mentally and physically, Brendan had them engaged and fit, they don’t look either now, Lenny has not had an easy job, helping us over the line and into tomorrow but if the players really wanted him they would have shown up to help him win the role, at sevco we looked a beaten team from the get go as we have for the past 2 months, I fear this time around the players are too professional for Lenny and he is out of his depth, last time round it was “his” players and they played for him, he went to hibs and fell out with players about drinking etc, a team is a reflection of their manager I am afraid and if you are not a good example to them especially at that level then they soon turn their backs on you. Just my two cents on the situation just now, I was at the past few home games and the players never once reacted to Lenny shouting at them, he was ignored and by looking at him apathy has set in and he is ready to move on this weekend as well.

I could be totally wrong, but I will welcome who ever it is come Monday, but Moyes would be ok with me.

Good to see you back as well fella!

Interesting that you and a lot of the other guys are broadly okay with the Moyes appointment. It’s interesting that people are taking a proper look at Moyes’ career again. I’m not crazy about the idea, I have to admit, but as I said last week that no less a figure than Alex Ferguson believed in him enough to push for his appointment at Manchester United … well it’s awfully hard to dismiss that.

    Never far away :-)

Not getting involved in the manager stuff, can actually see all sides of the arguments for, against all the contenders will cross that bridge when permanent manager is appointed, until then Neil is our manager and hope to see him parading around Hampden around 24hrs time, love the Scottish Cup final, always have, last game of the season not being in the final was always such a let down especially during the cheating bank of Scotland sponsored years, so for me it’s all about the morra and am sure the bhoys have one last push to give us and even wee eyes in the back of his head Willie will not even be able to stop us… this has been an unsettling season from Athens to even now, but in time we should appreciate even having a sniff of a treble treble, and if anybody thinks for a minute our club hasn’t been working behind the scenes on our manager for season 2019/20 that’s just nonsense

    James,

I just think Manu broke him as it has done, Van Gaal and Mourinho with bigger budgets, its a poisoned chalice now, Good luck to Ole. Since his gig in Manchester he bounced around the globe trying to get his confidence back at countries that play good football and its all about pace and style at Everton it was british and it suited his style, my only concern would be his style of play if I am honest. I like the way he carries himself (slap comment aside) and he suffers no fools, our media and refs will not mess with him and he will call out the cheats as Clarke has done this season, I see lots of similarities with both men, Clarke having done more apprenticeship work but very stoic and seriously professional men. The fact he is a past player etc doesn’t wash with me at all, really liked WGS and Ronnie, I think its time we gave Davie a shot of the ball and let’s see what he can do.

Sorry for the rants, been too long since I posted, its all coming out at once, CQN Confessional lol
