For the love of the game. And endurance of Ally McCoist

1247

Close to 100 people agreed to participate in the Scottish FA’s disciplinary panel, as Neil Lennon put it yesterday, “for the love of the game”.  Processes were established and although panel members would meet and be introduced to club officials who were subject to their decisions, they were granted freedom from publicity in order for them to hand out punishments free of intimidation.

This freedom has now gone.

Such was the reaction to Ally McCoist’s public demand to know the names of the panel members who judged the actions of his club the SFA felt it prudent to select panellists who were happy to expose themselves and their places of employment to the outcry the original panellists endured.  IF they uphold of increase the penalties.

On Wednesday evening we should find out whether intimidation of the SFA works.

The biggest scandal of all is that despite the consequences of McCoist’s actions, the SFA have taken no disciplinary action against him.  Rangers officials are free to react to the appeal judgement in the same manner as the original without fear of consequence.

Other managers who are pursued for more prosaic matters might consider the SFA panel have something personal against them.

  3. A strange place for an article on Rangers – the financial pages of today’s (English) Independent –

“Donald Macinnes: Why I wouldn’t cry if my former team Rangers went under

I don’t understand the complex economic narrative unfolding in my home city, whereby Glasgow Rangers football club fights for its life after years of financial stewardship which can only be described as “Greek”. As words like “broke”, “soup kitchen” and “jail” get bandied around, with me being a former Rangers fan, you’d think I would spend my days crying at the kitchen table. But this will never happen. Why? Because we don’t have a kitchen table. And as I allow that revelation to sink into your conscious minds, like a welly in a swamp, I should probably explain why I am a “former” fan.

While it’s certainly true that I attended Rangers’ Ibrox Stadium many times and sang the songs and ate the pies and shook my fist at the Celtic fans, there came a time when I just couldn’t do it any more. Thankfully, once my electronic tag was removed, I returned to the stadium for more singing and eating and shaking. But having done that for a few years, I grew tired of it; tired of the songs about Catholic people being evil, sneaky; spawned by weasels; tired of the chants about we Protestants being altogether better; more groovy and less likely to make potty on the carpet. When all is said and done, football matches between Rangers and Celtic may be the most exciting of their kind in world football, but whatever electricity causes them to vibrate as much as they do is generated by lager, bigotry and, well, lager.

I’m sure I will get hate mail about this column, because I haven’t lived in Glasgow for 15 years and I’ve rejected my kind, blah blah. The bottom line is that I moved to London so I could live and work among people who really don’t care which god I bow to. When I tell them about my broken relationship with Rangers, I still get English people (non football fans, I should add) saying to me: “Rangers… that’s the Catholic team, right?” And I love their ignorance. Oh, to not know.

So maybe the best thing to happen to my home town would be the dissolution of Rangers. While I wouldn’t cry tears, many would. But I may have a solution to their angst. Let’s see Celtic (who have always, certainly publicly, been seen to lead the way when it comes to abandoning sectarianism), make the grandest gesture of all and welcome all of those unemployed Rangers players and bereft fans into their arms, creating a combined Glasgow team. Everybody’s happy and Scotland moves forward into an optimistic future.

Next week… Palestine: my three easy steps to a lasting peace (including cross-border badminton).”

Tim how you doing mate , well after all this time on CQN ive finally made it . being accused of being a HUN. May i ask what exactly in my posts seem to have bothered you . I call it as i see it , I would love to see the SFA stripped of any decision making on the matter. I would love to see the whole stinking mess being handled by the highest powers in football . , I would love to see punishment fitting the crime ,and btw the punishments are there for the crimes committed . I would love to see every tainted title removed from their history . I would have loved to see duff and duffer stripped of there administrator duties ages ago . I would love to see an end to the constant delays . I would love the laptop loyal to stop brown nosing . i would love to see HMRC stick the boot right up them . i would love there to be evidence of tax evasion so much so that the other boys in blue got involved . But this is rangers we are talking about , softly softly is the approach here , they should have been gone a long time ago . And that is what frustrates me so much . I know thats what we all want , like many other older bhoys on here, we have seen it all before . So my friend i dont know what prompted you to politely think i was a hun. good god mhan. never been so insulted .

    Just a thought,

At the start of their downfall I wanted them to go into liquidation immediately, but on reflection, this is much much better, I hope they keep going till all the results of all the investigations are in. This way we can spin it out, watching them posture and squirm, and the whole world will know about all their dirty dealings. If they had gone bust immediately it would have been an overnight sensation – this way is so much more enjoyable – its a delight to log on in the morning, filled with suspense and anticipation, to see what their latest drama is. Its a bit like the day before a rangers celtic game – only knowing what the outcome will be!.

    Morning all,

just back from the shops and seen the front page of the DR – what took them so long. Still no cracked crest tho’ :)

However, moving on, read the Daily Mail’s article about Fergus.

I was there the day he got booed, and at the time I thought it was unworthy of the support and a real slap in the face to him.

We can all recognise now that a certain element of the support allowed themselves to be manipulated by Murray’s Media Poodles – some might have another phrase for it – and Hugh Keevins was one of the worst offenders. I heard him on SSB last nite lauding Fergus, but waited for an apology, but guess what?

    Shouldn’t have expected anything else!

Some have posted on here that the Bunnet should be there at the unfurling of the flag and I think that CQN should take this forward, if it hasn’t already been done.

Even if he doesn’t want to attend I think that there should be some form of public recognition for the vastly important part he played in our Club’s history. Any thoughts

Kids from Thai Tims banned from wearing their Celtic shirts in schools

May 12 2012 Exclusive by Chris Musson

THE “Thai Tims” group of singing children have been banned from wearing their Celtic tops or singing Celtic songs at a Scots school.

After the kids visited a school in Glasgow last week, a parent complained that they were breaking the city council’s ban on football colours in classrooms.

Council officials told the group they couldn’t wear their tops or sing songs linked to the club on a second planned school visit, to St Paul’s Catholic Primary. Organisers of the children’s trip to Scotland then cancelled the visit.

A source told the Record: “It seems the council have decided rules are rules, but this kind of situation calls for some common sense.”

The Thai kids learned their Celtic songs from tragic student Reamonn Gormley, who taught at their school on his gap year. Their links to the club and Scotland were strengthened after Reamonn, 19, was murdered in his home town of Blantyre, Lanarkshire, last year.

The youngsters have sung at Celtic Park and Glasgow Royal Concert Hall during their visit, and are staying in the hospitality area at Parkhead. They performed at St Francis of Assisi primary school in Baillieston, Glasgow, last week.

A parent from St Francis complained to the council, and officials there said they had received “numerous” other complaints.

The council added that they were concerned about sectarian-related abuse posted on YouTube after a video of the kids’ St Francis performance was placed on the site. The video has since been taken down.

A council spokeswoman said: “We would be delighted to have the children visit any one of our schools.

“It would, however, be entirely inappropriate for them to wear Celtic strips while singing Celtic songs.”

The council have spent large sums on schemes involving Old Firm players and staff visiting schools – while wearing club colours.

    ======================

I was there the day he was booed. Present day reports seem to make out it was virtually the whole stadium booing. My hazy recollection is that it was sporadic. A bit like when Lenny was supposedly booed by the whole ground for a back pass against Boavista in the Seville year.

Booing is one of those sounds that can be made to sound loud with only a minority in the ground doing it.
