For the sake of Celtic, time to look each other in the eye

382

Yesterday’s statement by Celtic was clear and unambiguous.  The club are aware of reports of ill-treatment of supporters by police and have an established process in place to handle concerns, directed through the umbrella Fans Against Criminalisation Group (incorporating Association, GB, Affiliation, Irish Association and Trust).  Two complaints have been received and actioned since December, which sounds like we have an under-reporting issue.

I am very pleased they have committed to form a Complaints Panel, with representatives from the support and the club.  We are the one family so there is no need for the club to manage complaints, the support is more than qualified on this matter.  This is important as it gives supporters oversight and ensures the club cannot act behind supporters’ backs on such an important issue, which should ensure that going forward matters are dealt with properly.

This is the response I wanted from Celtic.

Celtic also suggest accusations they have targeted supporters are “without foundation”, asking “What would be the Club’s motivation for being involved in activity which targets or victimises supporters? It is simply not true. It does not make sense.”  It makes no sense, of course.

Statements from the Green Brigade on Saturday, and the Affiliation committee (who believe they were referred to in the Green Brigade’s statement) today, raise some real concerns.

If, as the Affiliation suggest, “In recent weeks have seen finger pointing, whispers, rumours and lies aimed at organisations and individuals within them from sections of our own support”, we have a poison in our midst.

These matters are important enough (to me, anyway) for all parties to require clarification.  Get whoever said what to whom about whoever in a room together.  You will soon find out who has the cojones to look everyone else in the eye, and you will find out who is damaging your football club.

Lest we forget, these matters are a result of First Fantasist Alex Salmond’s Offensive Behaviour at Football’ Bill.  The consequences of which were predicted by Fans Against Criminalisation Group, as well as Celtic, who in their written submission to the Justice Committee (sic) said as much:

“The legislation potentially discriminates against the football supporter by reason of that person being a football supporter. It criminalises him or her for being a football supporter and not only because of the nature of his or her behaviour. In other words, exactly the same behaviour could be deemed illegal if performed by a football supporter, while not constituting an offence by anyone not participating in a football environment.

“An offence of “offensive behaviour“ and the test of the reasonable person, are introduced in section 1(2) (e). This test is extremely wide and creates considerable uncertainty over what is or is not acceptable.

“If this offence is to be introduced notwithstanding our comments above, clear guidelines should be published by the Lord Advocate to explain what sorts of conduct are considered as offensive or unacceptable. The potential for confusion in the absence of clear and consistent guidelines is potentially limitless and runs the risk of the law becoming unenforceable, or brought into disrepute.”

The Scottish Government passed sloppy legislation and put extraordinary funds into a policing project which only serves to make them look clueless.

  1. The Honest Mistake loves being first – Even on this site there are compulsive liars who continue to attack the club. It’s only a matter time before one of these causes a rift.

On a completely unrelated note, where are DonegalDanny and his Donegal Dancers these days? (thumbsup)

  3. The exact words are “Since December last year, we have received two complaints directly to the Club, both of which have been addressed.”

It does not say resolved, dealt with, received, actioned or anything else.

Under reporting? Who takes a grievance to be dealt with by the persons against whom they have it?

The elongated “since December last year” = the last 6 weeks.

“2 complaints directly to the club”. Does this mean there are indirect complaints?

Motivation is irrelevant and talk of it is a red herring.

Well said. Those 2 points have to be addressed by the club first before we can move forward.

Failure to do so will confirm to many that the statement issued yesterday is a crock of horse manure.

    Paul67,

I can’t help but feel club are wrong to get involved.

What resources have they to fully investigate claims of harassment and mis-treatment? CCTV will be of limited use in determining what, in most cases, will be issues that arise from verbal misendeavours.

Will Strathclyde’s finest be happy to supply Celtic with statements for Celtic to arbitrate in any dispute? I don’t think so.

This is going to end up in a bloody political mess.

  6. South Of Tunis – When I heard Silvio Berlusconi had an election coming up, I misunderstood and thought “So what’s new? He probably has shares in Pfizer” (thumbsup)

Think I might dig out the ole French Jaune pages, call up my favourite Parisian 2nd hand bookshop and ask whether they happen to have a copy of “That Dirty Rat Lawwell” by D.B. Balde.

This is what happens when you have to be seen to be doing something, anything for the sake of it. A bunch of jokers.

their seem to be an agenda being implimented

while i think the club are not involved they are duty bound to make sure the staff and police treat the fans in a proper and just way

  11. Sorry Paul67 but I cant agree with your opinion regarding the Club statement about the GB and Celtic supporters in general.

The Club must have been involved with the 1 game bans applied to some supporters at the Dundee Utd game , so we need some info from the Club directly relating to these bans .

I have 3 thoughts on the Club’s statement yesterday

    1) I welcome a statement/position

    2) It answers my previous queerie – there is no obvious motivation for the club to discriminate against its own fans (particularly as the number of supporters dwindles

3)Why has the club then banned members of the GB? Or is this a false claim?

  13. JohnnyClash – Whatever happened to Bobo’s book then?

It’s called “I Am Legend”, not to be confused with Walter Smith’s autobiography “I Am Legned”. (thumbsup)

The folk who were turned away and not told why have a valid complaint and now the avenue to pursue it.

I suggest that they do for everyone’s credibility.

  15. Paul 67

one claim of the GB that needs dealt with (amongst others) is the one that they have tried to have the meeting with PL that he had said would go ahead, but as yet he has not “had the time” to meet them. Peter needs to either find the time or make it clear he will not meet them.

One other thing, for both sides, can we get a name put to these statements. “Admin” talking for the GB, and a statement from “Celtic”. Who is penning these accusations and counterstatements?

I wouldn’t want to hear a “spokesman for CQN stated”. I want to know who these people are. Mind you, if the GB statement is accurate, I can perhaps understand why they wouldn’t want names in despatches. They’ll be getting a jam sandwich taxi from work tomorrow!

  16. Steinreignedsupreme – This is what happens when you have to be seen to be doing something, anything for the sake of it. A bunch of jokers.

These days the political class assumes it always has to be seen to be doing something, by which they mean dreaming up new laws and rules. Hence the Scottish Parliament doing nothing else of note except implement petty rules to penalise smokers, drinkers, parents, football supporters, etc. Scotland was a freer and better country before that ugly shanty town was constructed at Holyrood, at a cost of £400m.

The idea that the taxpayers who pay their wages and expenses are competent adults capable of running their own lives doesn’t seem to occur. See also: doctors who now think it’s their job to control what people eat. (thumbsup)

  17. A smashing article & a very welcome response from Celtic, who are if a very difficult situation as to how they deal with proposed legislation, which is in simple terms ‘a dog’s breakfast’.

Let’s put our trust in the club & stop all the ‘whataboutery’.

Paul67 himself is to be commended for the controlled manner in which he has handled CQN through these difficult times for a valued section of our support.

We are all in this one together.

  18. Not sure if having a few ex senior Police Officers in positions of power behind the scenes at CP,is adding fuel to the fire here.

  19. The Scottish Government passed sloppy legislation and put extraordinary funds into a policing project which only serves to make them look clueless.

Indeed , the rot started there. Why are we left with the problem? and why can we not sort it out internally as you suggest. I suspect you know more than you let on. I will follow with interest.

Silvio has promised to reimburse last year’s Property Tax [ in cash ] Within 4 weeks of him being elected the citizen will be able to collect the relevant cash from their local Commune. I imagine the citizen will have to negotiate their way through the on strike local Commune workers who will be outside the Commune HQ protesting that they haven’t been paid in months . Maybe Silvio will be personally handing the money out.
