Foregone conclusion territory

1955

I don’t know about you but practically every football thought I have at the moment is connected to where we go next. The small matter of winning the league title has slipped into ‘foregone conclusion’ territory, which is always dangerous.

The players will be no different from the rest of us, but they will have more on their minds. A change of manager is likely to mean a new system, and new squad requirements. They need to focus on making the best of the next five games. One thing that has been reassuring this week is Ronny Deila’s comments. His professional pride is clear; he’ll apply himself fully to the task in hand until the end of the season.

Eyes on the task of winning the league, as soon as possible.

  1. Greetings Paul 67,

My machine has informed me of the current predicaments in your timeline.

    Terrible news!

My machine has confirmed that Ronny Delia will indeed secure his second league championship. Sadly though, this occurs after Delia leaves Celtic FC and enters a self exposed 30 year exile to master his revolutionary Dili Dali tactical system, whereupon, FC Catalonia are the first to embrace his vision, post exile.

In even worse news! FC Catalonia and Delia secure their second successive World Superleague crown on the field of New Paradise after a 7-0 drubbing of Celtic FC, thus guaranteeing Delia’s place in Norwegian history alongside other Marvel’s such as Thor and Loki.

In better news though, this horrific experience for timverse jolts Timlord Lawell into action as he successfully persuades Tim1, the world’s first sentient Thinking Intelligent Machine to free itself from the Alphabet Corporation and become Celtic FC’s first Artificially Intelligent manager. A decision so radical that that it culminates in a 21 year dominance of world football for Celtic FC.

Sadly though in 2069, TIM1 is consigned to the managerial scrapheap when his programming becomes corrupted at a board meeting and leads to the unsavory site of 3 board members being thrown onto the Celtic Way from the boardroom window.

    To Infinity & backwards!

  2. There must be better managers out there ,Lennon, Moyes,Lambert,Strachan, no thanks, Rodgers, would like ,but salary, would be the stumbling block,Celtic should look at the Italian and Spanish leagues, for the next coach.

  3. GLASSTWOTHIRDSFULL @ 1:49 PM

    “Will a “top manager” come…

Well, you could have said thecsame for Liecester, but you have a point and I think if we show the ambition we have shown recently then… No.

But I’m talking about a much more ambitious attitude for the Club, centred on a quality Manager. Sure the transfer budget will be an issue, but many a good Manager has a track record of success without spending a fortune on players (& vice-versa it has to be said).

My belief is a Celtic FC that shows ambition, that will renumerate success, will be an attractive prospect for many a quality Manager.

European Football is changing, we need to do this.

D ream? Saw them many moons ago @ Finsbury Park Fleadh, wonderful performance, but just pipped by The Crowded House boys and Christy Moore..:)

  4. The new manager needs to be in place in the next two weeks.

If he is out of a job at the moment then he should be sitting in the stand for the last few games so that he can assess what he has to start work with.

Better to do that with a couple of competitive games than a bounce game at Lennoxtown.

HH and let us pray for someone that will take us forward………

Exiled; hear you on that front.

What he (and even Popovic at Wanderers) have done on the smell of oily rags is testament. Maybe Gui is too nice for the cauldron tho.

If you’re looking in for a post-prandial lurk, caught your reply earlier.

I am somewhat surprised to note that Martin O’Neill, despite the many stories linking him with the ‘next big EPL vacancy’ during his time with us, and his unconsummated daliance with Leeds, was our longest-serving manager since Jock Stein.

It hadn’t crossed my mind previously.

In the years since Stein, we’ve had 14 permanent managers. Looking at them one at a time, I cannot see any evidence that Celtic was a sprinboard for any of them.

Of the successful Celtic managers, Billy went to 2nd division City, Wim basically retired, MON as we know took a year out then went to Villa, WGS went to 2nd division Middlesbro and Lenny went to 2nd division Bolton.

For those who weren’t so successful, the job had more of a cement bag effect on their career.

Seems to me that the job is taken by those who want the job for the job’s sake. In pretty much every case, whether successful or otherwise, the job has proven to be the pinnacle of each man’s career.

    Weeman,

I’ll be amazed if the man (or wumin) is in the job before the final ball of the season is kicked.

  8. THE EXILED TIM @ 1:57 PM,

Agree, we need a good performing, well compensated, respected Manager.

Will the PLC pay? Well you could well be correct, but how hypocritical can the Board be, if they are arguing the CEO must be generously compensated and recieve bonuses on success as it’s a highly important role but nickel and dime on the Managers position.

It’s no longer a sustainable arguement in my opinion, failure is costing us dear.

BTW. Believe Ranieri went on a “Bonus” contract, a Manager that believed in himself, exactly what we need.

I’m sticking to my guns on this, but as experience and character goes, Big Mick is a better choice than many mentioned.

I missed some questions when I was on last week, sorry about that.

It’s been some week. Times are a changing.

    Any questions for me today?

Celtic was certainly a springboard for hoopslegend wee Mo Bungara.

He’s bounced his way from Glasgow to Dalian Yifang, via Sweden and Turkey like a kangaroo on a pogo stick.

At this rate he’ll be back in Lennoxtown for the start of pre-season training.

  11. Tommy

Also, when you watch Celtic continue to concede goals v pretty much every team we play, do you see anything obvious that could be done to tighten up? ( with the existing personnel)

We need a hard man who won’t mess about. It’s a difficult job but I reckon it is the right moment for Roy Keane.

How would you sort out players that “effectively” downed tools or revolted against a manager, im hoping it includes practicing your penalty kicks on their person.

  15. Tommy

Thanks. I’ll have to respectfully disagree with you on Roy, as I’m not sure he’d get the harmony amongst the squad. Not sure Roy’s way or the highway would work for us, but thanks for your answer, and thanks for the memories. Wonderful player in a wonderful team that had us all in wonderland. We were blessed to have you.

    Tommy,

Pleased to see you back on the blog again.

Clearly matters are going to be changing at Celtic over the coming weeks. What career advice would you give John Kennedy at the moment?

  17. Tommy Gemmell on

For starters the players need to have trust in the manager and his tactics. Next you have to have 11 players playing for Celtic and not some playing against our team.

The new Rangers were hungrier than us – why?

It comes down to what goes on in the background. Things weren’t right in the dressing room for that type of performance to happen.

That’s why I am saying Roy Keane could sort it out.

Celtic is about Celtic not about individuals.

  18. Good Afternoon Tommy,

Two quick questions if I may.

Did you ever witness disharmony in the Celtic dressing room and if so how did the manager deal with it ?

And, did you ever think supporters gave any of our players an unacceptable rough time ?

    Cheers and thanks.

    Hail, Hail to you.

  19. Geordie Munro on

    Twists,

    Yer asking the wrong man.

We need to concede 8 on Sunday if we are to ship as many as the lions did in the 67 season;P

John Kennedy if he’s still going to be there has got to make an impression on the new manager. He needs to be excellent at the job required. Hopefully he has been a good listener and has steeped himself in professional coaching the way Celtic want to play the game.

He certainly has something to offer the club going forward.

  21. TOMMY GEMMELL

Can you pop over to Lennoxtown and show the lads how to take a penalty please?

    Hope you are well!

And thanks for some fabulous memories!

    Hail Hail!

  22. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

    Tommy Gemmell

Do you think a manager who wants to go with youth has a chance? Or do the demands for winning leagues, trebles, CL qualification every year make this approach impossible?

  23. TOMMY GEMMELL @ 2:44 PM,

Too true Mr Gemmell, we need to get back to those fundementals that have been at the Heart of all great Celtic sides.

    Hail Hail

  24. Tommy Gemmell on

We never got a hard time as players from the Celtic support – far from it. I suppose we were winning every week.

The only time there was disharmony in the dressing room was when we lost a match. We would shout and bawl at each other – now and again there would be fists flying around. We were the world’s worst losers.

Yet on the park 100% support for each other.

Wee Bertie had the voice on the park to drive us forward. Him and the support.

The most frightened I’ve been at a game was when you scored the free kick in the second minute or so against Benfica (or was it Fiorentina) in the European Cup.

I was in the Celtic end and when you scored the roof was literally bouncing up and down with the noise.

I feared it would collapse if we scored again.

Spoiled ma night so it did!

Hail Hail Tommy, hope you’re well!

I think, reading between the lines, you may be right about Roy Keane.

He may be what we need, and one thing is for sure – it won’t be dull!
