Foregone conclusion territory

1955

I don’t know about you but practically every football thought I have at the moment is connected to where we go next. The small matter of winning the league title has slipped into ‘foregone conclusion’ territory, which is always dangerous.

The players will be no different from the rest of us, but they will have more on their minds. A change of manager is likely to mean a new system, and new squad requirements. They need to focus on making the best of the next five games. One thing that has been reassuring this week is Ronny Deila’s comments. His professional pride is clear; he’ll apply himself fully to the task in hand until the end of the season.

Eyes on the task of winning the league, as soon as possible.

    Nye Bevan,

Hope you are going on Sunday, my third last game in 112 before I get punted to 110 next season.

Is there anyone on here who genuinely believes that Neganon (whom I have never met, or conversed with outside of CQN) doesn’t have Celtic”s best interests at heart?

Personally, I happen to think he is right. But, even if he wasn’t, surely he is entitled to express his view?

    HT,

    How you doing, pal?

Not a dig at you (I genuinely mean) that … hopefully, just a discussion with a poster (i) in a position of some authority now with the Trust, but (ii) mostly, someone who seems like a genuinely decent lad …. So, I hope you take my questions in that spirit.

but, if we want the owners to change, and the owners want us to keep giving them money (which, frankly, seems to be all they care about) ,,, isn’t Neg right in that, if we want to effect change, we must hit them in the pocket book? If that is all we have, then that is what we must use.

If the owners know that “supporting the team on the park” takes “precedence over everything else,” aren’t we basically telling them that they need not take any of our concerns seriously (because we will show up no matter what they do?)

Personally, I think Neg is right ….. we (the fans) had the chance to effect real change … both at Celtic and in the SPFL …. but I think we let that chance slip through our fingers….

And I include myself in that ‘we’ … and sadly, I’m afraid that I will be joining Neganon on the outside, unless some improvement is demonstrated before the start of the new season …

So, I am not asking as a dig at you … genuinely, hoping that you can show me the ‘error of my ways’ as the prospect of not watching the bhoys next year is already filling me with dread.

By God I hope you’re right, a few dropped points tonight in Perth will help my erratic sleeping patterns!

Over the next 5 games we’ll find out if it was right to keep Ronny in place for the run in. But his Celtic teams have been a bit like Forrest Gump’s box of chocolates. You’re never quite sure what you’re going to get.

    Hail Hail

  4. I agree with all those that say supporting the team to win the league takes precedence over every other consideration at the moment. I hope to be there myself on Sunday but I am on cocodomol (sp?) for my back and I might not be able to make it and the frustration and anxiety is making me worse.

Wasn’t Haughey shown the door by Fergus? Says it all to me. No thanks.

  5. Neganon,

I don’t think there is a Celtic supporter alive that blindly supports the club. We are all invested in wanting our club to be the best it possibly can. I respect your decision to boycott the club financially if that is what you feel will enact change at boardroom level. For all our boards faults we are not quite at the level of Kelly/White mismanagement and Celts for Change action. I agree though the board need to change the club’s strategy going forward.

  6. Bye bevans you are slightly misreprenting me. Of course I want Celtic to win the league. But withdrawing our support is important to enact change.

  7. The negative one not discouraging “supporters” from attending? His plan consists primarily of withdrawing support and resources for the club. It might be helpful to read before you write.

  8. Neganon 2

Maybe you’d prefer things the way they used to be when we were shipping out LISBON LIONS in their 20s or failing to keep guys like Davie Hay at the club for a few hundred quid here or there, or offering Jock Stein a job in Celtic pools or sacking Billy McNeill or calling the support ‘Morons’ in the match day programme, or employing Terry Cassidy (you think Lawwell is bad), or Cambuslang or Wayne Biggins…

Not good enough mate, I was on nefopam and morphine tabs and still got there, mind you there was hundreds of players on the park according to my blared vision :-0

Don’t you think what’s happened might actually galvanise the bhoys and they’ll want to give Ronnie a title to leave with? I do, and I know that throws up the question ” well why didn’t they”…..you know the rest, but it’s likely ( in my opinion) the players will go the extra mile from here on in.

I certainly hope so. I bear RD no malice. It didn’t work out. We have to thank him for trying and move on.

I’m heading out shortly my friend and I think your respectful post deserves a worthy reply which time doesn’t permit just now unfortunately. So if it’s ok I’ll reply later when I get back on.

Ps Trust me, I’d never accuse you of having a dig or being personal with any poster.

league if it mean’t the end of PL and the board?

  15. Ok, I’ll be there on Sunday

I do wish we had someone new in the dugout though

With regards where we find ourselves, how accurate was this from one of the original Rebels :-)

Based on T&T’s assessment and QUONNO’s ‘bombed’ list…………….

IMO (guesstimate) we’ve probably wasted on average £3M per year on purchases and (conservatively) £1M+ on wages these past 5 years = £20m+ down the drain!

At the risk of repeating myself:

Cut our current gene pool by 20-25% – Academy and First Team (sell or move-on). Instead of buying various ‘projects’ – narrow the field and look for semi-finished articles like FF (loan with option to buy) and GH (proven below EPL level and superior to SPL) – pay a decent transfer fee and a wage that entices a player to come to CFC with the option of going down the V67/VvD route when the selling price is right.

Who ever the New Incumbent – this is the area that needs to be addressed urgently!

I would add a serious look at the reported £600k scouting costs – deal with reason we are looking at this 20-25% player pool reduction

  16. theglasgowcelticway on

I believe all focus should be on the next five games, winning the league is the priority in my view. We are 8 points clear having lost three games this season. Strangely that shows there are problems. We should be confident to the point of hubris in this position but understandably we ain’t.

I will be at the game on Sunday heading( rushing) back from a weekend in Durham, as I want the team to get over the finish line. This point worries me, with the current state of affairs and decision making processes in place. I,e A manager who is leaving is left to win us the league albeit from a strong position. Crazy!!

Surely we cannot muck this up!

However my current thoughts are that I will not renew my season ticket until I see who is in charge of the team and what if any changes are made on the running of the club. I have been fortunate to be able to afford and buy a season ticket since 1994: The Hampdump year but the disconnect between fan and board is now at the widest its been for too long and I am not happy with the running of the club.

I believe the board are hoping that the fans love of Celtic will overcome their current discontent. Very risky strategy indeed!

Time for wholesale changes in strategy or indeed those providing the strategy IMO

HT … appreciate the note. Looking forward to chatting … either online or you have my email.

  19. Clydesider I would disagree around your comparison with this board and the Kelly’s etc. What the Kelly’s did was incompetent. What this board is doing is corrupt and nefarious.

  20. Winning captains I agree that most of our boards have been pretty bad. But this one is corrupt and is actively acting against the support at every given opportunity and is trying to return us to our place at the back of the bus. It can’t get much worse.

  21. Sorry things did not work out for Ronny but I have to say when Celtic on occasions played well I did get a laugh out of his Ronny’s Roar antics and you can only wish the man well in the future.

A couple of Championships, League Cup and making the group stages of Europa twice will do his CV no harm. Celtic now have a League title to win and will be playing for bonuses so I cannot see anything other than strong performances to achieve that goal in the remaining matches of the season.

  23. Nye bevans I want Celtic to win the league.

Even if we lost it the board would simply stay in hiding. Football results don’t really matter to them. Money does.

Csc I am concerned we could utterly collapse. Withdrawal of your season book will be the start of change.

  24. CultsBhoy can not relate to Celtic Board ambitions on or off the park on

Winning this league is the urgent priority

I’ll definitely be there on Sunday and for the other home games in the run in, roaring on the Bhoys and Ronny. As others have said, the only thing that matters at the moment is winning the League title. Other matters can wait until this is achieved.

However, once the season is over I’ll be keeping my cash in my pocket until what Celtic’s approach to change is. The Club is not stagnating it’s actually regressing. Change is needed.

  28. Neg

You are being very lenient on the Kelly’s and Whites

For years they took money from the support and made themselves and their families very comfortable!

That was being done by many other football clubs but it was still a form of corruption.

They weren’t so incompetent then nor was Desmond White, when he used his position as company secretary to hoover up shares from unsuspecting families when a relative had passed on!

Despite all your bluster you have been unable to produce one single piece of hard evidence to prove that the board have conspired to help the zombies, it’s all supposition and innuendo IMHO

    HH

  29. mike in toronto on

In spite of the fact that RD clearly wasn’t working, I liked the idea of what he represented ….

I will confess that I was genuinely fearful when the zombies hired PLG, as I thought he (not sounness) would genuinely revoutionize the game in scotland….

and I thought that RD would or could do it for us ….

In hindsight, I think the game in Scotand is so badly broken (lack of skill, fitness, lack of integrity in how it is run…) that wholesale change at one time is probably too much to expect …. increasingly, I think the change will have to be incremental …..

just not sure, which is the first necessary step …

Quonno. Surely you don’t mean roping in the Lisbon Lions to advise the Sellick supporters to vote NO? If you vote YES you’ll lose your Old Age Pension. No.I missed that. I’m sure the Tory and Masonic board members enjoyed that. Not the first time that Tories & Labour danced, celebrated together. But I’m sure Ernie will explain…

    ####

You’ll be old enough to remember when the SNP and Tories both celebrated when they voted together to bring down the Callaghan government.

We then had Thatcher. Not that you minded that so much.

As for ‘roping in’ Billy McNeil and Bertie Auld, I assume you’ve never met them. They’re not the sort to be roped in to anything.

And I do wonder just how an independent would afford to pay an old age pension this year with a £15billion defecit, with the promise of next year being worse.

  34. TheOriginalSadiesBhoy on

I loved the Ronny Roar but felt that it should only have taken place after important/ hard fought victories.

  35. Ekbhoy and croppybhoy,

Hard evidence. The 5way agreement and the fact that Lawwell has been called out as being involved and hasn’t refuted it. Or Lawwell sitting on the sfa board where he would have had to be engaged in what was going on.

Being in denial at this stage of the game seems to be a bit strange. But each to their own.

Croppybhoy I am not being lenient. They were awful and I agree they were leeches (a bit like Peter). But I don’t think they conspired to criminalise the Celtic support nor collude with the Hun to ensure that they prospered. Could be proven wrong though……
