Form vagaries of Malmo for Celtic

793

Celtic will play Malmo in the Champions League play-off round, the third time since 2012 they will face champions from Sweden. The main concern for Ronny Deila is the manner in which Malmo disposed of Salzburg 3-0 on Wednesday night, but there is context to put that into. In the previous round the Swedes only managed a 0-0 at home to Lithuanians Zalgiris Vilnius, before winning 0-1 away.

Those three goals against Salzburg, which arrived inside 45 minutes, will be the subject of a lot of research over the next few days.

In 2013 Celtic struggled to blow away the cobwebs against Elfsborg, recording a 1-0 home win and a 0-0 draw away. A year earlier they beat Helsingborgs 2-0 home and away.

The most encouraging aspect for Ronny will be Malmo’s domestic form. They are current 6th in the Allsvenskan after 18 games and will struggle to qualify for Europe next season. A home game against league leaders Gothenburg on Sunday will be Celtic’s most important reconnaissance exercise.

Oh, and put out the flags, Malmo play on grass!!

If you’re being realistic about the buddies .. It’s a bunch a wains they’ve fielded plus their best player has left .,

They’ve found their level .. They’ll be stuck in that league for many a year.

    No great loss, really.

I was in the pub and glanced at the TV as Sevco attacked and I thought their player was well offside. Next thing I know, it`s a corner and they scored from it. Was their player offside ? I know it doesn`t really matter but I am just curious.

Thanks. As I said, I only glanced but I thought he was. Also, looks like a really big crowd. The MSSM have , so far, fulfilled their promotional duties exceedingly well. I wish I didn`t care but the truth is I do. I had hopes when they died that a new, fresher and more honest Scotland would be the outcome. In spite of the numerous predictions from the estimable Philmac and others, I fear the pretence will continue and they will become the Scottish Establishment`s team just as their predecessor was. I know large sums of money would normally be necessary for my pessimistic prediction to become reality and I do not know how that will be achieved but I believe it will be. It is a horrible feeling.

For years now, this Champions League thing has really bugged me big time. It is called The Champions League ffs.

It is ridiculous that the Champions of all European Leagues are not automatically in the , well, Champions League.

Instead, we get teams from all over the place who are not Champions but are in the bloody thing and the champions have to play up to three pre-qualifiers. This is nonsense and needs to be addressed like now man!

Are the powers that be frightened that some minnow from Malta or the likes might win the bloody thing.

It’s a joke and needs sorted now!!

As I have posted previously CL is a farce designed to ensure that wee teams from anywhere never cause upsets.

  8. Danny Wilson should have stuck to singing Mary’s Prayer….

He looks slower than a week in Barlinnie, even at such a low level as the Scottish Championship.

Bullet dodged by Celtic….Although I have serious doubts we were ever interested in him.

  10. Just catching up

KevJungle, hope and pray you got fantastic news, take care

Now for my annual European Tournie gripe

Came home tonight to a letter from Celtic, would appear instead of only moving those with seats in the original block H for Champions league, now everyone in blocks 103 – 107 are to have a free for all for seats, on a first come first served basis

Mind you those in home cup scheme wit probably get their own

Can I ask, what is the problem with putting all the European sponsors into the kerrydale lounge, and leather seats in the stand there ?

And leave us season ticket holders in 103 – 107 in our own

    Hail Hail

PS – when do tickets go on sale ? Not checked official website yet

    Starry

Aye the culture vultures at Ibrox will have a tough decision this evening …FFS

  12. The standard of football at Ibrox tonight is embarrassing.

How can 50,000 people pay money to watch shite like this?

It is on a par with the bottom 4th tier of English football at best and defies belief how so many people could get remotely excited over it.

    Embarrassing from the BBC…

Imagine awe the Rabs and Sammys on their way tae The Festival wi’ the xxxxxl bobbly taps on:)

    Naw me neither..

  14. Jut=st had a quick glance at the BBC text from the Bigot Dome and saw this beauty:

“Martyn Waghorn, puts in what looks like a two-footed, studs first challenge, but the referee waves play on”

Seems the new club has inherited some sort of immunity from the old one.

  15. Oh Celtic ticket office open at 10 tomorrow, so will get there early and see where I’ve been moved too :-)
