Form vagaries of Malmo for Celtic

793

Celtic will play Malmo in the Champions League play-off round, the third time since 2012 they will face champions from Sweden. The main concern for Ronny Deila is the manner in which Malmo disposed of Salzburg 3-0 on Wednesday night, but there is context to put that into. In the previous round the Swedes only managed a 0-0 at home to Lithuanians Zalgiris Vilnius, before winning 0-1 away.

Those three goals against Salzburg, which arrived inside 45 minutes, will be the subject of a lot of research over the next few days.

In 2013 Celtic struggled to blow away the cobwebs against Elfsborg, recording a 1-0 home win and a 0-0 draw away. A year earlier they beat Helsingborgs 2-0 home and away.

The most encouraging aspect for Ronny will be Malmo’s domestic form. They are current 6th in the Allsvenskan after 18 games and will struggle to qualify for Europe next season. A home game against league leaders Gothenburg on Sunday will be Celtic’s most important reconnaissance exercise.

Oh, and put out the flags, Malmo play on grass!!

  3. Happy Birthday Lily!

Was never interested in having kids of my own and didn’t, but had a relationship with a girl that had 3 teenagers.

1 of them had a few kids and suddenly i became a pa!

Being so close to those wee ones really made me think id made a mistake never having any.

    They are a joy.

  4. The thought of any Celt giving up on Celtic coz the other mob are getting preferential treatment is perverse in the extreme. We were born from adversity, how can you compare any disillusionment you might feel about today’s antics compared to the suffering and prejudice against the Community who first embraced Glasgow Celtic.

Did that Community wilt or give up, they bloody well did the opposite Celtic became their nation, their religion their soul, they turned adversity into triumph and we have inherited what they built. We are going for 5 in a row, guaranteed European football till Christmas, a great chance to make it Champions League football. Why would any Celt be in the slightest bothered by them never mind considering giving up on Celtic because of them.

OK Rant over, off oot to cut the grass. AS I type off ooot I think of Kev J. Please post Kev and tell us you are OK.

  6. It’s a pity some Celtic supporters feel so conflicted about playing the new Rangers that they want to give up supporting Football.

In one sense, who can blame them.

Yet most of us have known what’s been going on for years. Of course with the honest mistakes, the fixture computer, errant registrations and LNS enquiry. A lot of things have suggested such goings on.

But the Five way agreement and Dougie! Dougie! Gate with the resultant referees strike was proof positive of the corruption.

Things had got so bad they couldn’t hide it anymore.

The thing that gets me is the challenge that the new Rangers will bring. Now I don’t think they’ll come near us on the pitch.

I’m if course talking about the challenging behaviour. We see BBC journalists banned by the Club for news worthy, accurate reporting on Rangers crowd behaviour.

We see RST demanding to see the SPFL officials to discuss their “grievances”.

We see blatant unsettling of an opponents player, by tapping up, before a crucial match – then quieting afterwards.

We see PR consultants placing stories all over the SMSM, to benefit the new Club…. Etc… Etc.. Etc.

This is the challenge we’ll face. And who knows, the errant registrations, the fixture computer and the guid aul honest mistakes might all make a return (not that wasn’t evident last season, but IMO although there was dodgy refereeing decisions the SFA often reached a balance decision on disputes.)

This is the nonsense I’m not looking forward to.

As far as the Football Challenge is concerned. Paul Murray has indicated the new Rangers will be in their rightful place in around seven years (by that I guess he means better than Celtic and dominating Scottish Football). Dave King has recently said it will be 3, 4 or 5 years before they are competitive.

Think! That is nine-in-a-row territory conceded already.

When the new Rangers are promoted, we will hopefully have another years UCL cash from this season and another one to look forward to.

They will undoubtedly boost our coffers, it could be a record turnover Season. If we have consolidated our current position, and constructed a platform for the next phase, and I think Ronny and his team are doing just that, then we have nothing to fear.

Save the nonsense of course, but as long as there’s thems there’s going to be that.

    Hail Hail

Read back through the night, note you hailed from Whinhall/Burnfoot and went to Xaverians mid 70s

I lived in Rochsoles until 72 and I went to to School with two three ex-Xaverians. Two of them were Brothers and went to St. Margaret’s after their Father died. The third also came to St. Margaret’s, Roy Croppie knows the latter.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  9. corkcelt,

excellenty put, why after being a celtic supporter through all the worst of their cheating, why would anyone say i am giving up on celtic now.

we won, they died, something akin to them, ie their zombie following, needs somewhere to shuffle along to, they will go the same way, rotten to the core,

    its bloody hilarious.

i hate the thought of playing anything that tries to resemble them again, but, and dont laugh, if that new team gets into our league , on sporting merit, then so be it. the smsm can spout what they want, its just laughable the position they take on things, it doesnt make it the truth.

ps, i would look 3 players each to saints and hibs, at very low charge rates, and let out bhoys play a part in keeping them down.

mcmullen was the most talented player on the ibrox green grass last night, he had fire in his belly. the blue meanies team, overrated pish, but then thats their supporters gullibillyity again,

so, onwards and upwards celtic, ………..

here we go to ten in a row.

  10. Morning all.

A very hoopy happy fourth birthday to wee Lily.

I turned four in 1958 when Celtic were winning hee-haw, apart from the Reserves under big Jock.

    Have a good day (LILYS)GRAMPA!

    HH!!

  11. As an aside….has anyone queried the SFA, Companies House, Scottish League authorities as to why the team playing out of Ibrokes are allowed to use the deid teams badge/crest on their jerseys…..thawt that was illegal?

  12. LILYS GRANDPA @ 9:42,

What a great age, hope she has a great day, I’m sure she will.

I’ve got a treat today, as it’s #1 Sons Birthday today (and incidentally my wee bros) I get to baby sit two of my Grandsons this evening 4&2. Carnage then bedtime:-)

    Enjoy the day.

    Hail Hail to the Leos

the badge would have been considered an asset and coud be bought and used – like the stadium etc.

  15. I was saddened by Alex Thompson’s piece yesterday putting us on a par with the deid team as regards “bullying” the media. His word. I am all for journalists doing their job properly but few if any would get work in Scotland if they were to do that with regard to us. The readership can’t handle the truth (neither can the “journalists” often enough). Thompson should be well aware of the situation in Scotland. I thought his piece wallowed in lazy journalism. Shame really.

  16. Jungle Jim Hot Smoked on

“The thought of any Celt giving up on Celtic coz the other mob are getting preferential treatment is perverse in the extreme.”

Perversity would be to continue going to games whilst holding the view that the Authorities had taken the game beyond the level at which the last remnant of belief in a fair contest could still be held..

“It’s a pity some Celtic supporters feel so conflicted about playing the new Rangers that they want to give up supporting Football.”

For me, there would be no conflict. If I felt I was watching a staged production, I would no longer be interested in Scottish Football.

Whilst the Authorities refuse to accept that Rangers are no more, I will be unable to trust the Authorities therefore unable to take the game seriously. If Celtic are complicit, they would no longer be the Club for whom I feel the great affection which I do.

I realise I have not explained myself very clearly here but it is all to do with an emotional attachment. If that disappeared, I would not have a problem in not going to games anymore.

Currently, and I am aware of the apparent contradiction in my argument here, I am loving going to Celtic games.

  17. KevJ- stay strong. Know at least you are in my thoughts. Please keep us updated as to your progress.

Mort, welcome back. It is a pleasure to read contributions from you once again, one of the early CQNers that brought the joy of Celtic to my doorstep far away from home.

One deadpan look from my 78 year old uncle when I mentioned the possibility of chucking supporting Celtic when the huns re-enter our league, was all I needed to shut my gob and get on with continued business of supporting the Tic. Thank you CorkCelt for reinforcing his viewpoint.

I agree with SFTB, of all the teams we could have drawn, I believe Malmo to be the team we will be most prepared for. I expect to see a few cheeky banners of gratitude around Paradise for their visit…

    Happy Birthday Lily!!!

I’m taking the weemhan 5 to his 1st Hoops game next Sat ,

I’m burstin to tell him but will wait till day of game,:)))))

My auld uncle John often told me

Good friends of my Grandparents , Mr & Mrs Peter Smith from I think Rose St in Glasgow came one week late 1930s and asked if he could spend the weekend at theirs.

After lunch Peter “C,mon we’ll go a wee walk John”, On walking along the road which was thronged with Scores of Hoops and Deadco fans which had his head spinning along with being in Glesga ,he’d never been out of Mossend in his 9 years,

Just as the crowd thickend into a mass Peter pulled out his jacket 2 Celtic scarves and handed one to my uncle John,”were going to the gemme wee mhan”

in his last days as he approached his 81st birthday he could recall every single sight sound smell and even the touch of the scarf as it was placed round his neck,

he never married or had kids but his love affair with THE Celtic lasted a lifetime from that moment .

  19. Gene,

  20. LENNYBHOY @ 10:33,

Yes I knew the brothers at the time, tragically young age to lose your Father. The youngest was in my year.

Went to the funeral at Rochsoles cemetery, had some cousins that lived at the top of Dykehead Rd (opposite the cemetery) they would have been at St Serfs at the time you left, the eldest went to the Xavarians also, knew the brothers well and the eldest was in his year.

Can’t place the other Xaverian at the moment, but Had quite a few Cousins at St Margret’s and a couple who taught there.

Exactly. The SMSM can’t turn them into a decent team – if they could they would be Real Madrid!

Looking at the herald website there’s all sorts of guff. Lee Wallace is a world-beater. Vladimir Weiss is open to a “return”. No doubt to team up with Gattuso, Novo, Bougherra and all the others!

Look after ourselves and we will be fine. Ronny, Johnny and John are making good progress. And I have a good feeling that we will see more youths coming through in the years ahead.

  23. As I said after the game last night, Sevco are much improved and it would be silly not to admit that.

They play very much like we did when Ronny came in. We press a bit more but the similarities are there. They may well rack up some real big score lines this season and I see the fans getting right behind them.

The luxury they have is that their opposition is not very good so the mistakes they make as they adjust are not exposed as ours were against Legia etc.

About 5 or 6 times they have the ball away in bad areas, just as we did against Legia but St Mirren could not capatilise.

Re Malmo, I still cannot understand the fear from some fans. Some even calling them favourites.

Malmo have been very poor bar a decent 45 minutes against a weakened Red Bull.

All their top players from last year have gone bar Rosenberg.

We could buy anyone in their team, but frankly, none would get in our first 11.

They will not be one if those sides who can keep the ball for fun, they don’t have the technical players.

They, IMO, will not be as good as Qarabag.

  24. Chairbhoy on 8th August 2015 10:55 am

Before the election, Alex Thompson with standing just down from Bairds doing a piece for C4 news about Labours chances in its old heartlands. Anyway, wee woman walks by and he stops her to ask if she was voting Labour .. The wee wuman retorted straight away, with ”F**K Labour” live on air .. So, maybe he’s took the hump with that ??

Just watched Steven Thomson’s penalty from last night’s lower division match.

Amazed at the ‘technique’ he used.

Haven’t seen anyone trying to kick a football that way since the old fellow next door tried to kick the ball back over the fence without losing his slipper.

Can’t say it was a deliberate miss, only he knows, but his team mates will have difficulty coming to terms with the incident.

    Quite extraordinary.

What’s Thomson going to do next to help the team? Embed a spear in a team mate’s thigh?

  28. Guernica, you are correct about Malmo. Their form is poor and they have lost several of their best players.

We should respect them, of course, but if we are serious about playing in the CL (where every team we could meet will be stronger – often considerably so – than Malmo), then we really need to be confident.

Otherwise there’s no point being in this competition at all.
