Form vagaries of Malmo for Celtic

793

Celtic will play Malmo in the Champions League play-off round, the third time since 2012 they will face champions from Sweden. The main concern for Ronny Deila is the manner in which Malmo disposed of Salzburg 3-0 on Wednesday night, but there is context to put that into. In the previous round the Swedes only managed a 0-0 at home to Lithuanians Zalgiris Vilnius, before winning 0-1 away.

Those three goals against Salzburg, which arrived inside 45 minutes, will be the subject of a lot of research over the next few days.

In 2013 Celtic struggled to blow away the cobwebs against Elfsborg, recording a 1-0 home win and a 0-0 draw away. A year earlier they beat Helsingborgs 2-0 home and away.

The most encouraging aspect for Ronny will be Malmo’s domestic form. They are current 6th in the Allsvenskan after 18 games and will struggle to qualify for Europe next season. A home game against league leaders Gothenburg on Sunday will be Celtic’s most important reconnaissance exercise.

Oh, and put out the flags, Malmo play on grass!!

  1. Haven’t seen anyone trying to kick a football that way since the old fellow next door tried to kick the ball back over the fence without losing his slipper. –

    brilliant description. very funny.

i realised whatever footballing skill i had is completely lost last summer when i tried to chip two footballs from the back garden into the trampoline enclosure. 5 or 6 attempts at it, each hitting the netting. gives up, bends down, picks up ball, i am only 2 metres away, throw ……….

    hits the side net again.

Penalties have been deliberately missed before. But I’ll take DELANEYSDUNKY’s word that last night’s wasn’t.

It’s great, funny how indulgent you become as the years pass – wonderful times.

Yes, they are limited now, and they know it too well. They’ve tried everything, last seasons failure was a huge reality check. Not that they took it on board, just redoubled the same old… We just need to rid ourselves of the other side of the same coin mantra.

    LENNYBHOY @ 11:01,

Yeah got him now, a good guy they were all friends. The ‘T’s’ (ST) lived next door to my cousins – very handy for playing footy tennis over the fence:-)

    Hail Hail

  4. No idea what Thompson was trying to do last night with the penalty, but sure it was not a deliberate miss.Thats nonsense.Everyone in football knows he has been a lifelong Buddies fan(unlike Chico)areal one.

If he had tried to miss, could have made a much better effort. The guy is past it.We Mc Mullan had a cracker. Some of the other Saints kids looked very promising, when they got to grips with the game.Decent manager who could do well with them this season. If Stubbs can get in a striker, they will be right up there. No foregone conclusion this league.

I think Stubbs could improve Hibs more if he played in defence. That’s their real problem area.

  6. I saw the link to the BBC N.I. Report and quite coincidentally I was reading about the wonderful and tragic life of Patrick McConnell the Saviour of Barcelona this week following a supplement published in the Irish News Friday 24th July titled “Belfast Celtic – legends of the Falls” which was sent to me. Well worth googling.

If it hadn’t been for ‘bonkers’ supporters threatening not to renew or buy their season tickets back in 2012, Sevco would have marched straight into the SPL as if nothing had happened.

Flaunting their world record titles on their strips, despite so many having been gained by cheating at mainly our expense.

I paid to watch that back in the days of improperly registered players taking our titles.

A game in which Sporting Integrity was non-existent.

If you think that having had my eyes opened, I’d pay to watch a game based on the acceptance of the Big Lie, not on Sporting Integrity, fairness and honesty,, it’s not me who’s ‘bonkers’.

    M6Bhoy,

I know what you mean. But, believe me, the Huns really do know they are a new club. Deep down they all know it and it is a pain and scar each of them will take to their graves.

There was nothing inevitable about the death of RFC – it could have been halted by a combination of fans and RRM at any time from the fag end of Moonbeams’ reign. But in their overwhelming arrogance, they didn’t act, and and as a support, they take a large degree of the blame for letting their club die.

Their buddies in the Media can write whatever they like (contradicting all their headlines from 2012). But you know, I know, they know, that RFC died.

That’a a terrible psychological scar to bear for the rest of your life. It’s almost Biblical.

    ————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

I don’t really care what the huns think but I disagree with the notion that they know that the old club died. On the contrary, they regard the new club as the same as the old club no matter the evidence in front of their eyes. They really are that stupid and delusional.

I have supported Celtic for over 50 years and am well aware of the cheating and corruption we’ve had to endure over that time particularly by the hand-chosen officials who have worth 10-15 points as season to the huns. However, this time qualitatively different. The history of what happened to the old club has been re-written and facts expunged by those in authority in Scotland (SFA, SPFL, BBC Scotland and other media outlets, etc.etc.) Over the last couple of years, a new narrative has emerged and in time, the events of 2102 will become a footnote in history. I suppose given everything that I have experienced following Celtic, I should not be too surprised at any of this but the clincher for me is the way our club has meekly accepted this without even the hint of a challenge. I would go as far as to say that some within our club have actually acquiesced in this to hasten the return of the bigot pound in the shape of the return of the Old Firm/Glasgow Derby.

I also have to add that there is a sizeable section of our own supporters who long for the new Rangers to get to promoted so they can return to being the green-half of the Old Firm. When we played them in the league cup semi-final last season, I was the only member of a large Celtic supporting family who didn’t watch the match. The rest, I’m sad to say, happily accepted the pre-match media hype that this was the return of the OF and watched it as though the last three years hadn’t happened.

Lastly, if any Celtic supporter believes we are going to be allowed to reach ten in a row after what’s happened since 2012, then they are as seriously deluded as the zombies. There is a no way the corrupt and bent footballing authorities in Scotland are going to let this happen. Aberdeen, on far fewer resources than the new Rangers, gave us a run for our money last season until they fell away at the end. A couple of seasons in the SPFL Premiership will see the new Rangers, the second strongest team in the league and it will only take a few “honest mistakes” to see them pip us before we reach ten. I predict we will not even be allowed to reach NIAR never mind TIAR.

In recent years I have become increasing disenchanted with the obscene greed associated with the modern professional game. However, I have kept my faith with my club though I do confess I no longer feel the same bond between the current crop of players in the hoops and previous generations. I no longer have the stomach to watch a game I know is rigged in favour of one club. If they want it so badly that they have to cheat and are allowed to do so then I don’t want anything to do with that. If that means, I stop following Celtic then so bit it. My own personal integrity means more to me than supporting a football club, even if that club is Celtic FC.

I’m a big boy now and will survive.

  15. Your call your life M6Bhoy but Celtic are more then a Football Club to me. Tommy Burns said he was playing for a people and a cause. To me Celtic is a cause, if it was just about football I would probably agree with you but to me its not. The man will eventually let you down but the cause will never let you down.

  16. m6bhoy on 8th August 2015 12:07 pm

you opinion is your own bud, heartfelt , sincere, and easy to understand how you feel.

the narrative of the authorities is indeed of burying the heads in the sand and lets just move on variety. a cover up if you will.

celtic plc, reluctance to say anything has been debated long and hard, and again, is very hard to understand. for sure, if it was the other way around there would be no allowance of a celtic fc “continuation”,

however, for me , i can clearly see that a football club incorporated in a company, once called rangers fc, did indeed die.

thats all i need to know, the rest of them can dress it up however they like.

    they died.

    fact.

So that ACGR medicine done nothing for you, I seen you out and about earlier this morning :-)

    Hail Hail Bhud

  18. ps, Aberdeen didnt come close to us last season, they had a heroic 2nd place, outperforming the rest of them, filling the void that the plucky rangers used to.

what was it again ………. 17 points .

Ah, so the Nats are more right-wing than Gideon?

Of course, Salmond didn’t mind the economic side of Thatcherism, did he?

Maybe the wee wummin’ was away to a ‘Let’s Criminalise More Celtic Supporters’ meeting?

Y’know, just incase things haven’t been ‘evened up’ enough yet.

  20. EPL starts today, Sky being hideously crass with their hype factor whic has been set to way past 11 all week. For all that, I would quite like to see how ManUre will be setting up this season, so I will watch this one. I also got 7/2 for a ManUre win, both teams to score so the pocket money has been blown.

Back to treadmill tomorrow to get back on track with fitness regime, as this mornings plans were dominated by DIY bollocks.

    Great post.

Contentedly, I find myself very much in the group in your opening paragraph.

I intend to enjoy five in row, thereafter depends on Celtic.

Can’t see any of the European teams matching either of these sides in the WC.

    14 to go.

  23. M6bhoy i hate sevco as much as i hated rangers cause they carry all the same traits, but companies house is clear that rangers are new company and therefore club as of 2012, the only narrative that counts, if not why are they still trading and where is the creditors money, suppose that question is avoided for reason hahaha!!!

Celtic will always have my support as it is my team, i will watch us against all that come our way and laugh in the face of stupidity i.e. Same club brigade

ticket bought for Malmö game, lets hope we get to the c/l group stage. Think ddv will go no matter the outcome and we might just get Stefan, stokes, mcgeoch, mcgregor and dirk out the door. Add 3 quality, first teamers and we are good to go!!!

get bitton and Johansson signed up on longer deals

please no loanees this time round we need at least 2 years from anyone coming in

  24. Petethebeat can see England, Ireland and possibly Wales mixing it with the Antipodeans. Not invincible , AB’s probably coming off a long time high with some of the older players passed their peak. Will be an interesting World Cup.
