Form vagaries of Malmo for Celtic

793

Celtic will play Malmo in the Champions League play-off round, the third time since 2012 they will face champions from Sweden. The main concern for Ronny Deila is the manner in which Malmo disposed of Salzburg 3-0 on Wednesday night, but there is context to put that into. In the previous round the Swedes only managed a 0-0 at home to Lithuanians Zalgiris Vilnius, before winning 0-1 away.

Those three goals against Salzburg, which arrived inside 45 minutes, will be the subject of a lot of research over the next few days.

In 2013 Celtic struggled to blow away the cobwebs against Elfsborg, recording a 1-0 home win and a 0-0 draw away. A year earlier they beat Helsingborgs 2-0 home and away.

The most encouraging aspect for Ronny will be Malmo’s domestic form. They are current 6th in the Allsvenskan after 18 games and will struggle to qualify for Europe next season. A home game against league leaders Gothenburg on Sunday will be Celtic’s most important reconnaissance exercise.

Oh, and put out the flags, Malmo play on grass!!

This is my first year in the home ticket scheme, can anyone tell me if CL leagues are included, or do I need to buy tickets ? Cheers..

  3. My Yahoo account has been sending out spam email messages to my contacts.

I’ve changed my password several times and ran scans on my pc.

The spams look like they’re forged i.e. when you hover over my email name in the ‘Sent’ area, an entirely different email address is displayed – probably of somebody else who has also been compromised.

I think I got it by clicking on one such email from my sister a few weeks ago when I was half asleep – very dozy thing to do.

Anyway, any ideas on how to solve it?

So we have drawn the world beaters in Malmo.

Play to our strengths and we can dream of the Bayerns and Reals in the group stages.

Over to you Ronny, cos you won’t get any help from Pedro.

  7. Any advice. Best bet to fly to and stay in Copenhagen and travel by train to Malmö?

  8. TheOriginalSadiesBhoy on

This is a great tie for us. Malmo are a well known club from a country whose champions we have defeated twice in the same competition in recent seasons. Not too much travel involved for us.

    .

There will be a big crowd at Celtic Park for first leg. We need to go into the games exactly as we did against Qarabag. Treat Malmo with respect, no over confidence or lack of confidence and play like professionals and we have a great shout.

I have no doubt that Malmo are thinking, “Celtic ………… Bloody hell!”

Yes Mike there are many Neanderthals within the the Ibrox legions, many more than we have – HOWEVER – there are many more of them in TOTAL.

If we talk in statistical terms, it is my opinion that the ratio would be the same – same percentage of Nutters in each support.

One only has to attend away matches, and sometimes on here, to see and hear, those who shame the Celtic name – so let’s not be too scathing, or, ‘holier than thou’

  10. Paul67 et al

Scottish Champions draw Swedish Champions, Panic in Detroit, (and elsewhere) or great chance for Celtic to once again play at the top table of European Football. Or how about fantastic opportunity for Ronny et al to emulate Martin, Neil and Gordon in taking Celtic into the group stages of the Champions League? No?

  11. Have I got this right?

If we beat Malmo and win two group games the money we would gain from the CL would be:-

    Qualification from Play-offs : 3m Euro

    Participation bonus : 8.6m Euro

    Performance bonus : 3.0 m Euro

Market pool : 2.0m Euro (based on last years results)

    http://www.totalsportek.com/money/uefa-champions-league-prize-money/

So, excluding gate money and advertising, that makes approx 17m Euros.

You could buy a lot of Scott Allans with that sort of money.

    Correct?

I’m back momentarily, here’s a wee quiz to keep you going over the weekend. Name as many Scottish football clubs, you can, that have NEVER competed in the top flight of Scottish football since its inception in 1890?

  13. Its all about Celtic

Malmo, good team, treated with respect, confident tho we will go through.not an over confidence, just work to do.

the ‘black patter’ has already started. Robert Prytz ex malmo being asked, surely they could have got a swede who is a Tim :-)

they even beat Hibs… and which is nice to recall and shine a light onhow they the beat a well dodgy licenced(how did they get that again?) cheats.there they go linking old club cheating with mythbuilding history.

I think I caught the strong stench of zombie hun when I posted there, another one of those 70%. TT you can’t hide what you are, can you ffs?

Only a hun would refer to them as “Ibrox Legions” – typical MSM terminology. Your mask is almost down to your arse.

  16. The jury is split amongst the locals here in Malmö: the younger one, being young, dumb and full of…, see us as a walkover. The older are somewhat nervous.

Moreover, both sets see Lustig and Commons as the main threat (likely as they can’t name another Celtic player).

I see panic setting in as CP game approaches. More will be revealed when we watch tomorrow’s game in the local pub (shows every Celtic game).

Will be in the Musselburgh area for the return leg. Anyone know of any Celtic friendly pubs ?

  20. Bawsman

If you had been on Arran in the 80’s you could have gone to Jack McConnells fathers pub.

After retiring from running his sheep farm Willie McConnell ,a fervent Celtic fan, took over the Rock Hotel in Blackwaterfoot. Sadly the Rock Hotel is more . It was purchased by an in-comer neighbor who didnt appreciate a pub next door . He had the Rock demolished.

  21. Happy enough with the draw.

We should respect Malmo, but not fear them.

I’m pretty sure they are more fearful of facing us, than we are of facing them.

    Imo, of course.

As for Malmo, I’m happy with the draw, especially after reading some well informed posters on the loss of some of their players (sold or suspended) and their league position.

C’mon the hoops, this mob are there for the taking.

At least Supersutton will be happy with the home leg first, but he’s in the minority I’d imagine.

    ———–

I’m actually ambivalent about the whole 1st leg 2nd leg home thing. Was just not sure why others thought it was important.

Someone pointed out that having an extra 30 mins with the Celtic fans behind them is an advantage. I agree but wonder whether there are any statistics about how often we’ve won in extra time v lost and broken down by 2nd leg at home or away.

I’d do the research myself but wouldn’t know where to start.

Therefore I’m open to those with great memories to provide us with anecdotal evidence of each.
