FORMER CELTIC TARGET TRAGEDY

GEORGE BALDOCK, who had been a Celtic target in July 2021, has tragically died at the age of 31.

The Sheffield United right-back had been a priority signing aim for Ange Postecoglou shortly after he arrived at Parkhead to rebuild the squad.

The £4million-rated Baldrock, however, stayed put at the Bramall Lane club, but eventually moved to Greek giants Panathinaikos this summer. He played in the goalless draw with Olympiakos on Sunday.

The defender was found dead in his swimming pool in Athens yesterday.

SO SAD…Auston Trusty paid a tribute to former Sheffield United pal George Baldock.

His ex-team-mate at the Yorkshire club Auston Trusty, who joined the champions in a £6million switch in late August, said on Instagram: “Heartbreaking. Can’t believe I’m writing this. You will be truly missed.

“Loved every second of getting to know you this past year. It was an honour to share the pitch with you. Praying for your family. Rest in peace, brother.”

Baldock had been on Postecoglou’s wish list with the No.2 spot requiring strengthening after the club had sold Jeremie Frimpong to Bayer Leverkusen and Hatem Abd Elhamed to Hapoel Be’er Sheva in the January transfer window.

Everton’s Jonjoe Kenny had been brought in on a short-term loan, but failed to impress and was returned to his parent club at the end of the campaign.

That left just Anthony Ralston as his recognised right-back. Croatian international Josip Juranovic cost £2.5million when he was recruited from Legia Warsaw just before the window closed to fill the gap.
