Formidable but achievable task

388

No one said management was easy.  Neil Lennon has spent the best part of a year preparing for this game.  The scouts were told to go out and find pace up front which would allow us to defend in numbers but break effectively when possible.

That plan brought Derk Boerrigter and Teemu Pukki to the club but Derk has only recently returned from injury while Teemu made his debut on Saturday.  Meanwhile, Anthony Stokes has been busy making himself the heart of the team.  If Anthony was having a stinker of a season Neil Lennon would deploy the plan which has been long in gestation, but, unlike his opposite number tonight, Neil has genuine choice.

Before kick-off, there is no correct decision to this choice, hindsight will provide that answer, but we should remember that this is a squad game.  Players tire and performance falls late in the game.  Nine years ago we were within touching distance of a great result away to Milan but attempts to shore up the defence in the closing minutes failed.  If Celtic are in a position to take something from the game, they will have to plan for a 95 minute endurance exercise.

The margins for error in this competition are slight.  We matched Juventus in many areas of the field last season but were walloped 5-0 on aggregate.  Some fine teams found the step up to the big stage a harrowing experience last night but other smaller clubs got it right; Copenhagen made Italian champions, Juve, look ordinary.

The task ahead is formidable but get the plan right and the spoils are there for us.

Prediction: 0-2 to the good guys.  Enjoy your night.

I posted on The Huddleboard re the resolution and had a pretty good level of interest (40 posters asked for canamalar’s email to have the details sent)

I don’t know how many followed it up/completed the document

I would be happy to resurrect my post on there if you think it might help and also mention the distribution on Saturday.

    What do you think?

A deserved win for a taller, more developed team but good performances from McMullen and Henderson.

For those that don’t easily reach for the “NFL has no plan B” jibe and other simplistic fitba cliches, you can see the coaching in our support running and ball pressing. These guys are playing in a similar style to the big team which should help the likes of Liam Henderson if he can get another 6 to 10 first team appearances this year as he matures.

  3. Philbhoy – Ledaig is probably the only whisky I have tasted that I would never drink again. I bought it because I had never seen it here before and thought it worth a try. Was also cheap by malt standards. It has a very distinctive smell – overpowering stench of seaweed springs to mind. However, if you can get past this, the after taste is not too bad.

  4. Not an omen I hope…

Celtic’s u-19 side were taught some painful

lessons as they crashed 3-1 to their Milan

counterparts in the opening match of the first

    ever UEFA Youth Champions League.

The side coached by Stevie Frail and John

Kennedy matched their hosts in many areas

but weren’t as clinical in and around goal

    although some questionable home town

decisions contributed to the visitors defeat.

Jamie Lindsay’s headed equaliser in the 43rd

minutes was the highlight of the match for the

visitors but two second half goals from the

hosts ensured that the points stayed with the

    home side.

With no overage players allowed in the u-19

competition there were a number of new faces

in the Celtic side alongside the relatively

experienced quartet of Stuart Findlay, Lewis

Kidd, Lindsay and Denny Johnstone who all

played in last season’s Next Gen competition.

German goalkeeper, Max Oberschmidt, on loan

from Fulham, made his debut after deputising

for Leo Fasan in the SPFL action.

Celtic got off to the worst possible start when

they fell behind in the seventh minute when

Marco Pinato curled a free kick around the

    defensive wall into the net.

Undeterred the young hoops battled back into

the match impressing with their short passing

and composure on the ball with both full-

backs stepping up to form a six strong

    midfield.

On the half hour Celtic had strong appeals for

a penalty waved away when McMullan was

sent tumbling in the penalty box as he raced

    onto a pass from Henderson.

Two minutes from the interval Celtic

deservedly levelled the scores with a set piece

    straight from the training ground.

    Henderson returned McMullan’s short corner

with the cross into the back post met by the

unmarked Lindsay who headed home from

    within the six yard box.

Unfortunately Milan were back in front five

minutes into the second half when Pinato

scored from a penalty awarded against

    Findlay.

Celtic pushed forward at every opportunity

matching their opponents in every aspect but

unable to make their possession pay off in the

    final third of the half.

Midway through the second half Johnstone

forced a good save out of Andrenacci with the

keeper pushing the rebound wide for a corner.

As has been the case down the years against

Italian sides Celtic were taught a lesson in

finishing in the 75th minute when Tamas

showed some quick feet in the penalty box

before drilling a low 18 yard drive across

Oberschmidt into the corner of the net.

Celtic finished the match on the attack with

Luke Donnelly and Johnstone testing the home

keeper but the destiny of the points was never

    in danger.

    Milan: Andrenacci, Rondanini, Tamas, Simic,

    Piccinocchi, Saporetti, Pinato, Calabria,

Cernigoi, Mastalli, Barisic. Subs: Ferrari, Di

Molfetta, Gamarra, De Santis, Vido, Fabbro,

    Claveria. Coach: Inzaghi.

    Celtic: Oberschmidt; Sam Wardrop (Joe

    Thomson 88), Stuart Findlay Eoghan

    O’Connell , Aidan McIlduff; Conor

McManus, Lewis Kidd (Luke Donnelly 80),

    Jamie Lindsay, Liam Henderson, Paul

McMullan; Denny Johnstone Subs: Hart, Boyd,

    Thomson, McLaren, Breslin, McCart.

I think we are in pretty good shape for this one. If Ledley is out Neil has the option of pairing Brown with Mulgrew in front of the defence a la Strachan. Five across the middle with one, more central, forward, starting with Teemu there. Can see us scoring, and would consider a score draw to be a fantastic result. Hope we are wearing the Hoops!

I heard that there was a Sand Bar just off the beach.

May need one of the afore mentioned canoes to reach it though.

I would agree with your view of things. I watched both the Verona game and the Torino game. I couldn’t believe how bad Milan actually were. Neil has shown himself to be conservative in these away games though and I just can’tr see him telling the bhoys to go for it. I live in hope though!

  17. For US based Bhoys – todays game is available only on the more obscure Fox Sports regional channels. For Directv it is on the MSGHD channel which is available as a sports extra package for $10/month if you purchase online. Worth having for the duration of the Champions league first phase. After that, all games will be on mainstream channels.

  19. Delighted for the guy, Robinson is a rat ****ard.

Selfridges has reinstated a shop assistant

who was suspended after refusing to serve

    EDL leader Tommy Robinson’s friend

following a Twitter storm over the incident.

Robinson visited a branch of the clothes shop

on Monday with a friend but was refused

service from an assistant that Robinson

described as “a Muslim” on Twitter. The EDL

leader leads the political group’s anti-Islam

    protests.

Robinson posted a video of the exchange and

was promptly compensated by the shop with

a free lunch at its Hix restaurant, with

champagne included, for him and his friend.

However, the incident sparked outrage on

Twitter with many coming to the defence of

the shop assistant, who was suspended

following the exchange, and who Selfridges

said a perfect record in his seven years of

    work.

The shop said the member of staff would

return to work following an investigation, and

was quoted in the Evening Standard as

saying: “Company policy is everyone is

welcome, regardless of what people’s political

    views are.”
