Formidable but achievable task

388

No one said management was easy.  Neil Lennon has spent the best part of a year preparing for this game.  The scouts were told to go out and find pace up front which would allow us to defend in numbers but break effectively when possible.

That plan brought Derk Boerrigter and Teemu Pukki to the club but Derk has only recently returned from injury while Teemu made his debut on Saturday.  Meanwhile, Anthony Stokes has been busy making himself the heart of the team.  If Anthony was having a stinker of a season Neil Lennon would deploy the plan which has been long in gestation, but, unlike his opposite number tonight, Neil has genuine choice.

Before kick-off, there is no correct decision to this choice, hindsight will provide that answer, but we should remember that this is a squad game.  Players tire and performance falls late in the game.  Nine years ago we were within touching distance of a great result away to Milan but attempts to shore up the defence in the closing minutes failed.  If Celtic are in a position to take something from the game, they will have to plan for a 95 minute endurance exercise.

The margins for error in this competition are slight.  We matched Juventus in many areas of the field last season but were walloped 5-0 on aggregate.  Some fine teams found the step up to the big stage a harrowing experience last night but other smaller clubs got it right; Copenhagen made Italian champions, Juve, look ordinary.

The task ahead is formidable but get the plan right and the spoils are there for us.

Prediction: 0-2 to the good guys.  Enjoy your night.

  1. Having a pizza about a mile or so from the stadium. No other Celtic fans in sight but I’m getting lots of Forza Celtic from the locals…must be an Inter area!!

  2. The last time that I was able to go to a Celtic AC Milan match was when my Dad (RIP) took me to Parkhead in 1969 for the infamous game when Prati scored the only goal. I’ve waited 44 years for this :-).

I agree. You should organise Subbuteo knock-out cup tournament.

  4. Slept badly last night. Came in from Golf about 3 pm totally knackered. Sat in recliner and looked up CQN to get into match mode. Put laptop down and closed my eyes for a minute or two, woke up almost 2 hours later. Whoopee 2 hours closer to kick off and no worries at all.

    Hi Ghuys, Salve salve;-

Unfortunately I won’t be able to see the game tonight so I just thought I would come on and wish the Bhoys well. My one hope is that no matter how it ends up, we will be brave.

Just before Commons scored against SK it was looking bleak.

I thought..’ just let us go through, I’ll take six defeats but just get us there ffs’

Its funny but now we’re at the big party, I’ll be gutted tonight if we lose in Italy to 7 time Champions.

  7. I hope Paul67 prediction comes true as a 2 goal cushion would be great

For me 1 is as good as 10…..but the tension will be almost unbearable

Good luck to the bhoys tonite and all the support in Milan

  8. As we embark on our latest Champions League match, I must indulge and remember our first…

Again, northern Italy was the venue and we faced an excellent Juve team. A horrible ending scarred a great day. I was on the bus organised by Jean-Luc from O’Brady’s bar from Marseille and just getting there was a terrific experience.

After the match I said – “we are not out of our depth, we have found our level”

When Petrov scored to equal the match – with the run of play – it seemed we could onto win, alas a wee cheater denied us that

That was a young team with an exitable Irish manager – could we possibily talk about this team we have now in 10 years, as we do with the same affection of that team of old?

    I hope so!

Having read back a few pages, it’s clear that Celtic cyber space has lost it’s mind!! Such careless optimism. Argentina 1978 taught me as a young boy, football can do some awful, terrible things. im going 4-0 toMilan, with anything less a victory.

Subbuteo- we had full on televised leagues, custom painted teams, commentary teams etc- then moved to sensible soccer on the Amiga. Student days eh! Still found time to go out chasing skirt every night in between not attending lectures.

No, nice in the sun but brisk in the wind. A plunge tonight though. Celtic and Stout will warm me up.

  13. Unfortunately I’ve got the optimistic bug too..2-1 win for us tonight.

Good experience for the young hoops today….invaluable in the long run

I’ll be Buckie Thistle. I once got them to a Subetto final only to be beat by Rangers on sudden death on penalties. I remember very well Leslie Morgan (Awe naw and Maggie will remember him) shouting ‘F*uck yir Buckie Thistle’ when he won.

  17. canamalar prays Oscar can do it again on

    I’m already made up

I honestly don’t care what the score is tonight, we are we belong, a result would be awesome and I hope we can get one obviously but the karagandy result was as far as I’m concerned one of the best results in our history.

I just wish someone could get Sammi angry again :o)

I just hope if we don’t get a result those putting too much faith in satisfaction keep their frustration on a tight leash.

    So the important question

Is kick off 7:45 UK time ?

  18. looking forward to a confident mature celtic display tonight – if i had any concerns it would be with big Virgil. I think he can become a brilliant player , has already shown how comfortable he is on the ball – right now though i think his timing on the tackle is off – he’s been lucky not to conceded couple of penalties. Hoping this will improve as he plays more games but he will be stretched tonight.

    Mon the hoops!

  19. Just received a reply from the BBC re. my complaint about Jim Spence. Nothing to report, just acknowledging it, and telling me to wait a bit longer while they deal with it! I was actually going to withdraw it after they changed their course of action, and decided to back him, but, I’ll wait and see what they have to say!

1-1 tonight, Commons to score 1st.

    **************

I’m with you in the pessimism stakes… I never relax unless 2 goals up and in injury time!? I blame 1978 too… Of course that last league game Sunday a few years ago springs to mind… But hopefully this helps our management team instil common sense to our young Bhoys today.

However, sensible soccer was poor compared to Kick off! The World Cup version 1990 was excellent… Got to final with Scotland once… Pumped by Brazil… computer MIB was a Hun!

Can’t see a win, score draw for me… Good start to campaign.

  21. In an ideal world we would go into this years Champions league campaign a more confident, more expansive team , capable of controlling games with our play . Playing attacking football , the Celtic way.

I suppose in reality , soaking up pressure, solid at the back and being dynamic on the counter is the way to go .

    We can qualify.

Take a point tonight right now.

    Best of luck everyone.

I know it’s horrible to watch and bad for the blood pressure but I think we need to focus 100% tonight on keeping it tight and not conceding – in other words parking the bus.

Hopefully Milan will get frustrated and we may just catch them on the break – we certainly have enough pace in the squad now to look to hit them with the sucker punch late on if it’s still level.

I would bite your hand off for a point right now. With all the teams in this group likely to take points off each other, and three games to come at a bouncing Celtic Park, taking one point tonight could be vital.
