Forrest and Bitton steal the show as Celtic go down

567

Bayern Munich left Glasgow with three points, but that was two more than they deserved. The game was decided on a 22nd minute lapse. Dedryk Boyata should have headed but allowed the ball to bounce behind him. This is the kind of mistake which primary school kids are shouted out for.  From that moment, Coman was clear through on Craig Gordon, who made the mistake of coming out of his box in the vain hope of reaching the ball before the French international striker.  That aside, Celtic were excellent and deserved a point for their efforts.

As  with the corresponding game in Munich, this was a game for James Forrest, not Patrick Roberts, so I was pleased Brendan Rodgers’ hand was forced with the injury to Patrick.  James was outstanding.  He regularly drew three defenders, kept his head up in possession, and created the chance which allowed Callum McGregor to convert.

Watch James again at the goal.  He played the magicians’ trick: “Look over here, watch me.”  Every Bayern Munich player was focused on him before he pulled a rabbit out of the hat, it was a thing of beauty.  Wing play is difficult, although it seems it is more difficult for some to understand it, than it is to play there.  I enjoyed watching Arjen Robben, but James was the more productive winger last night.

Screeds have been written about a momentary lapse by Nir Bitton at Firhill, which cost Celtic nothing.  Last night, under the most intense pressure, the player grew in stature in the central defensive position.  I heard “What are you doing?” as he chased down a loose ball in the Bayern right back position a moment before the Celtic goal, but without that, or his build-up play which led to the goal, we would not have drawn level.

It is also worth recording that Celtic still had the option to make a substitution when Nir received a head injury which resulted in several minutes treatment and the application of a substantial bandage.  If his appetite for a scrap was in question (you know what I mean), he would have left the field at that moment.

I was getting frustrated for Callum McGregor, who constantly showed for the ball, but in the central role he started the game, seldom received it.  It was a brave move for Brendan to hook Scott Sinclair and push Callum wide, although Scott was clearly below his best, but this change was pivotal in getting Celtic level.  The aforementioned build up play from Bitton, the run and delicious dink from Forrest, cut Bayern open.  In true Halloween fashion, Callum wasted no time in burying ghosts of past German encounters.

Scott Brown was imperious, while Stuart Armstrong will still be replaying his early chance to open the scoring over in his mind, he can be satisfied with his performance.  Lustig and Tierney put in mature and energetic efforts.

Moussa Dembele had little scope to shine; an early left foot effort which he didn’t connect with cleanly was the sum total of his genuine opportunities.  Celtic wisely put numbers in defence and midfield, leaving the striker isolated.

A word about Dedryk.  He dropped on his knee on the final whistle, no doubt feeling the pain of his earlier mistake.  You and I have been watching football long enough to know this is part of the game.  Big Billy shared a couple of similar memories with me, which he carried like old wounds.  Dedryk has recovered from darker places during his time at Celtic and can use the hurt from last night against PSG, and when his countrymen visit on match day 6.  It was an infuriating moment, but he is a player unrecognisable from the Dedryk we lamented in Molde.

There is so much to be positive about.  On similar form, we will destroy Anderlecht and no one will fancy coming to Celtic Park in the Europa League.  So what do you have to worry about?  We’ll talk about that tomorrow.

  1. Hi, This is me. Just back from a great trip. Lovely to renew acquaintance with a great bunch of CQN’ers & of course to meet some more for the first time.

Net the great BMCUW got a Hug from the famous Dena, briefly met Moonbeams at CQN corner and there were a few more that will come back to me when I recover a bit from my trip.

Game was brilliant last night, Wee James was a revelation, Callum & Tierney were merely brilliant, we deserved something out of the game but at the end there was no sense of sadness from me, just a feeling of intense pride in our team an in our support.

I never slagged off Lennybhoy, he seemed surprised when I recognized him and I just said how could I forget that face.

It’s probably part of mortgage contract that football has to be played at Murray park at least one day a year.

So it’s the only way they can fulfill contractural obligations.

  3. And did you see Bayern Munich bus, phew stunning, that’s what we as a big club ,and we certainly are, should have, and why didn’t our club offer training facilities up at Lennoxtown to Bayern,They wouldn’t say to them to go along to Barrowfield, because there is no decent facilities there, which is an absolute disgrace for a club like ours

Yeah – their problem is they don’t seem to realise (or can’t admit) that it was access to external finance that made the old club “big” and that the new club won’t have this so won’t be big.

    Hello lads

Quite enjoyed yesterday’s game. As I have said before, the difference between that performance and many other Celtic performances in Europe? Confidence. In the past, when we gave up a silly goal, you could see some players shrink … but not yesterday. Instilling confidence in the players has been BR’s single greatest achievement.

As for the goals … I thought DB was a bit asleep, but, for me, CG was more at fault …. if a keeper comes out like that, he has to be sure to get the ball … if not, dont do it.

As for the second goal, NB was caught out … and, for a tall guy,he doesn’t leap well ….agree , as someone said yesterday, that it is harder for a defender when the attacker has a running start, but, the fiip side of that is a defender usually only has to get a touch on the ball, and it can go anywhere (except towards the goal), while the forward has to make a cleaner purchase on the ball … so, it evens up.

As most of you know, I have been a fan of NB’s since he joined … he has a quiet unflustered style… and has a good eye for a pass … and I like tall centrebacks who can play football (as opposed to big thug types) ….but …. CB’s have to be confident …. and they need to be able to dominate in the air …. and NB doesn’t really tick either box ….

I like him, and have said before, would like to see him play in more of a libero role (but in front of, not behind the two centre backs) … he might be the best passer of the ball we have, and that role (a deep lying play maker, like a Pirlo is where I think he would be best ….

but we would need to see if that fits in with the rest of the squad/formation we have, and we need to get him to be a bit more confident …

but I have done my part my making the suggestion … now it is up to BR to make it happen.

cheers, pal. She is going to see the oncologist next week … a long shot, but will see. Last night, she had on her lion costume, while we gave out candy (wish I could figure out how to post a photo on here) … the kids loved her! And she loves kids, so she was in her element all night. Was a nice evening.

But just for you. Without the pics. :-)

The mood at Celtic is magical

Magical: In the 67th minute, the Celtic fans sing for their European Cup hero of 1967

If you want to know what the big bang feels like, you just have to be in Celtic Park when Celtic Glasgow scores.

This stadium is pure magic. The fans in the stands just amazing. Goosebumps guarantee. Perfect football atmosphere. Or simply: The best football mood in the world!

I was able to watch many great games in Europe and have lots of magical moments: “You’ll Never Walk Alone” in Liverpool. 100,000 fans in Barcelona singing the Barca anthem. The crazy fans of Sevilla, who ignite a runner in front of the teams, which makes the whole stadium shake. The whipping fans of Atlético Madrid. The trembling south stand in Dortmund, when the winner against Real falls. The collective ecstasy in the Weserstadion, as Werder (yes, they were once in the Champions League) led 5: 1, and then just before the end of the redeeming goal of Barca was shown in parallel on the scoreboard and Werder brought in 2nd place.

Fanatically, the Scots scream their team 90 minutes forward

The Scots are screaming their team forward 90 minutes forward

But Celtic tops it all! I’ve never heard a stadium roar louder than McGregor’s 1-1 win. Everyone, really everybody jumped up. Fantastic. A gate orgasm of almost 60,000 Scottish throats.

Magic also the 67th minute, when the whole stadium lights up the mobile phone lights and all fans sing the “In the heat of Lisbon” song for the European Cup Heroes of 1967. If this does not come close, who has no (football) )Heart.

Already shortly before kick-off the German fans were astonished. The “You’ll never walk alone” can easily take on Liverpool. As the teams arrive from the time-honored catacombs, the entire stadium roars as if on command.

    RUMMENIGGE RAVES

“It was football like in old times”

If you do not like this mood, you do not love football. Even Karl-Heinz Rummenigge enthused in his banquet speech: “That was football in pure culture, from the atmosphere, from the stadium. And many, who are on the road with FC Bayern for a long time, have felt transported back to old times. That was a great atmosphere that we experienced here. ”

Many Bayern fans were a bit sad in the stadium – because at home in the Allianz Arena, it is inconceivable, with very few exceptions, that people jump on the grandstands and roar and whip their team forward.

It’s normal at Celtic – and for me, the game was one of the best stadium experiences of all time.

Dear Celtic fans: Even if you mostly lose in Europe – you are still world class!

Hello again all you young rebels.

What a show from the bhoy’s, and an even bigger one

from you fans, that was the type of performance from

everyone that makes people over here thousands of

miles from Celtic park understand why we are always

wearing our hoops tops and bigging them up, when you

get stopped at the shops etc. and people shake your

hand with a ” well done what a game ” makes one feel

    so proud.

  12. Pleasant reading on CQN this evening.

Auldheid has just given me the nod to publishing the Res12 update in the morning. It was in NTV at the game last night as a wee exclusive on their anniversary.

  13. Had a shake hands & a few words with Olympic Gold Medal Winner Michael Carruth in Edinburgh Airport on our way back from the game.

Last time I met him was in Seville, Michael Carruth is Celtic Daft, still looks a very hardy Bhoy, you wouldn’t want to mess with him.

  14. State of Real Madrid here.Worst performance I can remember seeing from them in yonks.Mc Manaman, clearly raging, saying they are woeful.Sometimes you can get lucky.Spurs drawn in a group that was supposed to be difficult.Turns out Dortmund have been dreadful,Apoel, average,Madrid tonight, dire.

When do we get our wee bit of luck?.

Slowly but surely Pochettino has built this Spurs team and they are looking good tonight…well done to him and the team…

I thought the exact same thing.

I get why opponents of ours can’t train at Lennoxtown pre-game, because we’re there, but for a post-match training session?

I dunno. I just detest the idea that those self-entitled cheating liars are making money out of our CL games, it sickens me.

However, it also opens the door to unwitting comedy such as this in the Daily Record:

“It is not the first time Rangers have had some of Europe’s biggest clubs train alongside them.

Inter Milan have previously visited Auchenhowie, while the USA have also trained at the complex.”

Hang on to them there coat-tails, Huns!

    You poor things.

    Yuk.
