Congratulations to Fraser Forster on his international call-up, I am absolutely delighted for him. It occurred to me that he left Sports Direct and Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley’s clutches on the cheap early this summer, while Ashley had other matters in Glasgow under consideration – partnering with Sevco.
It was with customary bombast that Sir David Murray announced the deal Rangers struck with JJB Sports in 2006 to offload the club’s retail and merchandise operations to the sports retailer. At a stroke the club banked £18m although subsequent dilapidation and redundancy costs ate into this figure. Celtic had previously rejected a similar deal, believing that securitising future revenue streams in this manner would only swap short-term for long-term problems.
That deal perished when Rangers liquidation was announced but the Newco acquired only one retail store (outside Ibrox) and no infrastructure in place. Instead, six weeks ago, Newco handed over retail operations to Sports Direct, who now operate its retail company, Rangers Retail Limited, and its online operation at rangersdirect.co.uk.
This deal was covered in local and retail press but lacked the bombast Murray would have brought to the occasion, perhaps because Ashley was aware that Celtic fans no longer felt comfortable spending their cash with JJB after the 2006 link-up. Better to keep this one low-profile so as not to cannibalise sales to Celtic fans.
Whether Ashley is part-owner of Newco or just their merchandising partner is moot, Sports Direct’s interests in the Scottish market are significantly entwined with The Rangers F.C.
It is unlikely the retailer had to pay as much as £18m up front to secure his new rights but their support will be absolutely critical in quickly building their partner club into a successful force. If they can do this while continuing to milk Celtic supporters they have knocked it off.
Chances of me buying the 125th Anniversary Kit from Sevco’s partner company are approaching zero. My Celtic budget is for the benefit of one club only, it will not help build The Rangers.

For years, many club chairmen and managers have been calling for a bigger SPL. One of the main reasons for this was to give clubs a safety zone where they would be in less danger of relegation. This mid-table zone which only exists for two or three teams at present, would give as many as seven or eight clubs the chance to blood young talent without fear of dropping vital points.
Earlier this week, Tom English stated that Neil Lennon was doing a better job operating out of the ‘OF’ bear pit (or words to that effect). By the end of this season, players like McGeough, Twardzik and especially Watt will have at least a dozen games under their belts which will inevitably add to their ability and value and I also expect another couple to break through from the next gen squad. When you factor in the luxury Lennon has of resting certain players before CL games it’s a win-win situation.
No matter how many times the dumb hacks try to tell us that we miss the huns and its all Armageddon, the opposite is actually the truth and they know it. Celtic will benefit most with them being away for a while but watch the attendances rise as four or five teams fight it out for the other European places from spring onwards.
Craig Whyte may just prove to be the man who saved Scottish Football.

I don’t tend to buy much merchandise these days, mostly bcause I have 2 daughters who have no real interest in Celtic but also because I think the desire to wear a football strip over the age of 25 (0r exceeding 11 stones in weight, whichever comes first) should result in psycho analysis ;-)
However, the difficulty arises when a large number of the support, who do purchase merchandise, find that they can get it at 2/3 of the price at a local sport’s retailer or somewhere like Direct Sports.

I don’t remember 25k empty seats in 2008/09. Some managerial decisions will always be open to question. There have been enough strange ones made by NFL over the past couple of years, but he has definitely learned from them. Dropping McGeady for Maloney was certainly not the reason for the league being lost in 08/09 though.

sanctions, should he fail to appear
at the coming debt-recovery case
scheduled to happen in Edinburgh,
possibly this side of Christmas.
You’ll recall that the company,
One Stop Roofing Supplies, of
Glasgow, is trying to recover just
over £86,000 owed the company
by the former Rangers owner Craig
Whyte.
Although this is a civil case on the
face of it, the powers under the
insolvency act 1985 are far
reaching if Mr Whyte decides not
to turn up to the court hearing.
On the face of it, the case will be
the appointed liquidator taking
action against the company
Tixway, owned by Mr Whyte. But
the force behind the case is very
much the roofing company, who
say they are determined to
recover the money they say is
owed to them, in the equivalent of
an English high court, the
Edinburgh court of session.
If they manage that, they will have
beaten many much more powerful
agencies also charged with investigating
the former rangers boss.
It is possible in civil cases for the issue
to be held in the court of session and
ruled upon purely in front of lawyers,
with neither interested party even being
present. However in this case the
examination of Mr Whyte is being held
under the insolvency act, which has
some far-reaching powers.
It is worth quoting the relevant section
of the act in full so we all know what
we are looking at this autumn in
Edinburgh. This is section 134 of the
insolvency act 1985:
(1) If a person without reasonable
excuse fails at any time tyo attemd his
public examination… he is guilty of a
contempt and liable to be punished
accordingly.
(2) In a case where a person without
reasonable excuse fails at any time to
attend his public examination… or there
are reasonable grounds for believing
that a person has absconded, or is
about to abscond, with a view to
avoiding or delaying his examination…
the court may cause a warrant to be
issued to a constable or prescribed
officer of the court –
(a) For the arrest of that person and
(b) For the seizure of any books,
papers, records, money or goods in that
person’s possession
(3) In such a case the court may

I agree with your remarks in principle about only buying merchandise from the Celtic Shop or Online store. IF I felt I could without being ripped off I would. The reality though for myself, and many Celtic fans in the South of Ireland, is very much different. Both the Celtic shop in Dublin and the Online Store (actually run by the English company Kitbag) are charging such an extortionate exchange rate on the Euro, that we as Irish Celtic fans are getting a very raw deal indeed and you feel like you are committing financial Hari Kari when attempting to buy merchandise. Go on to the Online Store today to see for yourself. The 125th Anniversary jersey is priced at 41.67 pound Sterling. If you use the Euro Currency icon on the top right hand corner the price is “helpfully” exchanged into Euro for you as being 62.50 Euros.
Today’s exchange rate is actually 1 GBP = 1.24348 EUR. That should mean the shirt should cost 51.80 Euros. So bascially anybody living in Dublin is being charged 11 Euros more, 8.85 pounds sterling more than the guy living and ordering the shirt from his house in Newry 60 miles up the road! This is not even including the postage which they making a killing on as well.
Its the same story in the Dublin Store. I actually bought my new home shirt this year in Elverys Sports shop in Dublin where is was what I feel was the “proper price”, 52 Euros. It seems if you are a Celtic fan in the southern part of this country you are fair game to be ripped off by the club. In fact, anytime I’ve checked, the sports shop directly opposite the Celtic Shop in the Jervis Centre is selling Celtic jerseys cheaper than the Celtic shop. Like everywhere else, times are tough in Ireland at the moment, and if you are gonna save 11 Euros not buying from the Club, then you are gonna go for it.
Our Supporters Club is a member of the AICSC who have brought this bizarre pricing structure to the attention of Celtic on many occasions. We have to hope they can help put an end to this disgraceful profiteering practice by the Club we adore.
