Forster, Ashley and partnering with Sevco

951

Congratulations to Fraser Forster on his international call-up, I am absolutely delighted for him.  It occurred to me that he left Sports Direct and Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley’s clutches on the cheap early this summer, while Ashley had other matters in Glasgow under consideration – partnering with Sevco.

It was with customary bombast that Sir David Murray announced the deal Rangers struck with JJB Sports in 2006 to offload the club’s retail and merchandise operations to the sports retailer.  At a stroke the club banked £18m although subsequent dilapidation and redundancy costs ate into this figure.  Celtic had previously rejected a similar deal, believing that securitising future revenue streams in this manner would only swap short-term for long-term problems.

That deal perished when Rangers liquidation was announced but the Newco acquired only one retail store (outside Ibrox) and no infrastructure in place.  Instead, six weeks ago, Newco handed over retail operations to Sports Direct, who now operate its retail company, Rangers Retail Limited, and its online operation at rangersdirect.co.uk.

This deal was covered in local and retail press but lacked the bombast Murray would have brought to the occasion, perhaps because Ashley was aware that Celtic fans no longer felt comfortable spending their cash with JJB after the 2006 link-up.  Better to keep this one low-profile so as not to cannibalise sales to Celtic fans.

Whether Ashley is part-owner of Newco or just their merchandising partner is moot, Sports Direct’s interests in the Scottish market are significantly entwined with The Rangers F.C.

It is unlikely the retailer had to pay as much as £18m up front to secure his new rights but their support will be absolutely critical in quickly building their partner club into a successful force.  If they can do this while continuing to milk Celtic supporters they have knocked it off.

Chances of me buying the 125th Anniversary Kit from Sevco’s partner company are approaching zero.  My Celtic budget is for the benefit of one club only, it will not help build The Rangers.

I could be wrong, but I read advice given somewhere re online exchange rate shopping.

It advised to refuse the Euro option and just rely on the Visa company’s rate of exchange.

I bought my 125th Anniversary top online from Celtic to deliver to Dublin using my Visa card, that way I paid in sterling and the exchange rate was set by the bank at whatever the real exchange rate was that day. I also got a free T-shirt to accompany it. If buying from U.K you should always do it this way because all companies will charge an exaggerated exchange rate if you use theirs.

Thanks for the advice regarding taking the sterling price online and not using the euro rate option.

On the downside though, the Celtic Shop in Dublin still seems to use the Celtic exchange rate instead of the real bank rate. Its very frustrating as I want to give the shop and the staff in it my support. Hopefully the AICSC’s representations to Celtic will have the desired outcome.

The problem is not that Celtic are directly ripping you off. It’s that they are allowing 3rd parties to on your behalf.

I had an issue with that Zoo mob that provide finance for season books. A day late with payment due to RBS issue with effing up bank accounts and they charge £25. Refused to refund. Although I was able to claim back on RBS. But if the fault had somehow been mine I would not have got my £25 back and my book would have been cancelled if I refused to pay. 1 day. Not a month. 1 day FFS.

Celtic need to look overall at their 3rd party agreements and service they afford their customers via these legalised criminals.

The native American societies of all levels treated their “people in need” far better than any other continent. Hunger -yes if famine, the Incas had stores all over the empire to be sent to areas in need.Mexico- the 6th largest city in the world, clean,no hunger no beggars(executions yes and maybe exaggerated but the torture and then burning alive at the stake- horrified Axtecs- which would you prefer). 50 years on Spain, with all the bullion shipped back , had more- inflation!.

“His remedy for this shocking lack of avarice” (taken from Stolen Continents) was to give them 160 acre plots leaving (land for future population expansion) 10,000 sq. miles in the Cherokee panhandle up for grabs- the land rush- you might have seen Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman in the movie.

I agree with that. If the third party companies are acting on Celtic’s behalf, they should act in a decent manner in line with our own club’s purported values. Celtic should not let the 3rd party outfits just do as they please when they sign on the dotted line. Therer has to be some overall responsibility.

    Murdo ?.

If you didn’t read the rags or partake of Shortbread Sportscone’s wares the only thing you’d know about Murdo is that he was a Hunskelper as a player and as an assistant Manager . ..

  21. I personally find Mr Provan way worse to listen to than Murdo. (although any excuse that he needs the money or talk of hating his job I cannot accept. Get a job you/he like and cut your cloth to suit … and remember to pay your taxes)

  23. THERE will be a special charity bucket collection at this Sunday’s match against Hearts in aid of the Kenyan Kibera Celtic Foundation

On Saturday, August 4, Celtic Charity Fund launched its 1254125 Fundraising Initiative. We are asking every Celtic supporter across the globe to raise £125 in the club´s 125th Anniversary Year to improve the lives of the world´s poorest and most vulnerable people.

One of the key 1254125 projects is ‘Celtic’s Kenyan Connection 2013’. This life changing initiative will involve a group of 28 Celtic Charity Fund volunteers embarking on a 10-day trip to help work in local schools in the largest slum in Africa – Kibera, Kenya. It follows the huge success of our inaugural trip to Africa in November 2011.

Due to the overwhelming response from the Celtic Family, all places have now been filled and the 28 representatives will set off on January 13, 2013.

As part of the trip, we are also looking to raise £18,880 for Celtic Charity Fund and the Kibera Celtic Foundation, a fundraising target to commemorate the club´s inception in 1888.

Not so fresh from climbing Ben Lomond on September 16, the participants themselves and their friends and family will be hosting a bucket collection at the Celtic v Hearts match on Sunday, October 7.

Collectors will be in place at all turnstile areas so please lend your support to their wonderful efforts for Celtic Charity Fund and Kibera Celtic Foundation.

I cant believe the other suggestions and although your point is valid and on its own a good enough reason but …..

If Tesco can sell at £45 (say) and make a profit for Tesco then presumably they are buying form the official manufacturer for £40 (say). Surely then if Celtic are selling the same thing for £50 then they are making £10 for the overhead of the store and profit. Anything else makes close to no sense.

  25. I liked Provan as a Celtic player. He was a bit arrogant and seemed to have a high opinion of himself but I liked him.

The thing that bugs me most about Provan the TV commentator is when he initially makes a wrong call – everyone makes a wrong call sometimes – and the slo-mo replay then clearly shows him to have made a wrong call, he NEVER corrects himself. Bloody annoying.

Should consider himself lucky to be working with a legend like ole Ian ‘Crocks’ Crocker.
