Forster, Ashley and partnering with Sevco

951

Congratulations to Fraser Forster on his international call-up, I am absolutely delighted for him.  It occurred to me that he left Sports Direct and Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley’s clutches on the cheap early this summer, while Ashley had other matters in Glasgow under consideration – partnering with Sevco.

It was with customary bombast that Sir David Murray announced the deal Rangers struck with JJB Sports in 2006 to offload the club’s retail and merchandise operations to the sports retailer.  At a stroke the club banked £18m although subsequent dilapidation and redundancy costs ate into this figure.  Celtic had previously rejected a similar deal, believing that securitising future revenue streams in this manner would only swap short-term for long-term problems.

That deal perished when Rangers liquidation was announced but the Newco acquired only one retail store (outside Ibrox) and no infrastructure in place.  Instead, six weeks ago, Newco handed over retail operations to Sports Direct, who now operate its retail company, Rangers Retail Limited, and its online operation at rangersdirect.co.uk.

This deal was covered in local and retail press but lacked the bombast Murray would have brought to the occasion, perhaps because Ashley was aware that Celtic fans no longer felt comfortable spending their cash with JJB after the 2006 link-up.  Better to keep this one low-profile so as not to cannibalise sales to Celtic fans.

Whether Ashley is part-owner of Newco or just their merchandising partner is moot, Sports Direct’s interests in the Scottish market are significantly entwined with The Rangers F.C.

It is unlikely the retailer had to pay as much as £18m up front to secure his new rights but their support will be absolutely critical in quickly building their partner club into a successful force.  If they can do this while continuing to milk Celtic supporters they have knocked it off.

Chances of me buying the 125th Anniversary Kit from Sevco’s partner company are approaching zero.  My Celtic budget is for the benefit of one club only, it will not help build The Rangers.

MWD signs contract extension with Celtic Football Club to provide support and custom for infinity and beyond.

Didn’t actually put a signature to it but it is stronger a bond than any players. Until the pee me off and I decide to bhoycot the club through preconceived misconstrued or legitimate reasons.

    So there.

If each of those 500 million fans had decided to give just £0.01 to the ‘fighting fund’ then they would have had £5m – around about enough to buy their club for themselves.

I shudder to think if Chuck had mobilised them in time and galvanised the lion’s share of them to donate £0.10…

  4. Just watched the Football’s Next Star prog on RTE.

This is a reality, elimination type programme to find one boy to get a one year contract with Celtic.

There was soon decent looking players amongst the group.

Out of 10,000 boys who turned up for trials, it will be whittled down to ten, over the next ten weeks.

However, this was filmed during the summer and the winner is already at Celtic Park.

Some may remember a friendly between our Development team and, I think, Blackpool.

The boy who won the comp scored CEltic’s goal that night and, when asked on Twitter, GK replied that he was sworn to secrecy.

To divulge the boys name now would spoil the programme.

    P.S.

    I don’t know the name.

I understand there is a buying price from Nike and a sell on price on which Celtic can make a little more, so the more sold direct by Celtic the more income generated for Celtic. Shop elsewhere and that extra is lost, shop at SD and they get it.

I think the lower prices that can be found elsewhere are due to the ability of the retailer with more outlets to negotiate a bulk purchase price that is beyond Celtic’s capacity to match.

It is but one more of those emotional decisions where affordability and support clash and individuals have to choose.

I think the key is having the right information to make that choice and simply put purchasing direct generates a bit of income for Celtic over and above the Nike arrangement.

    Good Evening,

I am afraid I have been busy writing a rather long piece—- over 11,000 words—- which is obviously far too long to clog up the blog with.

I have stuck it on my wordpress page– on which I never right anything— but felt it was better to put it on there than anywhere else.

The link is below if you are interested, otherwise all I have to say is that the team were absolutely brilliant midweek and a real credit to Neil Lennon.

Not the view of Celtic superstore girl I spoke with. In her view Nike set price and Celtic can add a margin to it. But the price they sell at is the price stipulated by Nike.

If your opinion is the case I’m happy to pay the little extra if my tree has a good season. But it would be good to know for sure.

If the extra goes to Nike ill purchase elsewhere but if it goes to Celtic ill buy from club.

Any chance you can get confirmation.

  15. Off subject but have been reading up on the changes to Housing Benefit due in April 2013. It is another example of this Government trying to social engineer using the benefits system and the poorest in our society.

It is estimated that this will affect about 670,000 households losing on average £13pw and 70,000 losing £20pw.

Could you imagine if this degree of detail was applied to your tax allowance?

It affects those who rent their home from a social housing landlord such the council or a housing association and are of working age, their Housing Benefit may be cut. This could happen if their home is considered too large for example, if the children have grown up and left home and there is now have a spare bedroom.

Under the new rules, if they have more bedrooms than the government says are needed, their home will be counted as being too big. Housing Benefit will be cut.

A home will be too big where there is more than one bedroom for each of the people shown below:

    *each adult couple

    *each other person over 16

*two children of the same sex under 16

*two children under 10, regardless of their sex

    *any other child

*an overnight carer you need but who doesn’t normally live with you.

It doesn’t matter if the spare bedroom is needed. For example, because:

a couple need to sleep apart because of a medical condition, or

children have moved out but there is a spare room for when they come and stay.

If the home is considered to be too big Housing Benefit will be cut by:

14% of rent if there is one spare bedroom

25% of rent if there are two or more spare bedrooms.

Meanwhile the rich get richer in bigger houses with more rooms than they know what to do with.
