Forster candle extinguished but there is consolation

185

I was holding a candle for Fraser Forster until the start of this week.  Goalkeeper is arguably the most important position on the field and Fraser had a huge impact on Celtic last season.  More than anyone, he was responsible for the League Cup Final win in December and his performances home and away against Lazio was the difference between the teams.  If only he was in place for last season’s Champions League qualifiers.

At 32-years-old he could easily have five years left at the top, we know he can do the job, so his signing was top priority.  That £90k per week contract at Southampton always had the possibility to cause problems and so it did.  Fraser’s star rose at Celtic and even if Southampton want to move him on, there is a better chance he will be able to go elsewhere in England and maintain, or improve on, his current salary.

Instead, we will hopefully console ourselves with a 26-year-old who, on paper, fits the Celtic model better.  At the money quoted, he is not cheap, but he has been tested in Europe, internationally and in a competitive league.  There is value to be had as clubs across Europe form recovery plans.  Those who trade well in this period will be big winners.

Embody else think MOI could be the SPFL top scorer this year?

I’m thinking depending on Griff applying himself that it’s very likely

so I’m having a wee bet on our Swiss Alpini to do just that.

You’ll all be looking up Swiss Alpini now lol.

    Hint.. related to EL PAPA.

  2. Regarding Mirko Marić he hasn’t signed for anyone yet, and it might take sevco a bit more than £2m to secure his services:

Marić joined Osijek in September 2017. In his second season, he became the league’s 2nd best top scorer with 18 goals. By January 2020, in the following league season, Marić scored 14 goals in 19 matches. Good performances attracted various clubs, however Osijek rejected a €5 milion bid from Dynamo Kiev.[8]

I, however, am more concerned about strengthening our defence than our striking options. No point in bringing in another striker if you are badly leaking at the back. We need at least one CH and cover at both FB positions. IMO Frimpong is a winger and not a FB.

I’m also in the camp that believes if we pay any serious money for a striker then PL will sell French Eddie before the transfer window closes. Lille might be making a bid in Glasgow after they sell Victor Osimhen to Napoli but I doubt it would be for fat Charlie.

  3. Yon Barry Fry doesn’t half spout some Lillian:

“Toney would be a revelation for Celtic, he’d be a star, for definite. He’d score 30 to 40 goals up there, he really would.

“Not only is he brilliant in the box, scoring and creating with his right foot, left foot and head, at six foot four he’s also our best defender. Celtic will get £40-50m for him.”

Ivan Toney is universally quoted as being 1.79m tall which is 5’ 10.47” and why would Celtic get £40-50m for him but Peterborough can’t ?

I’m with you re -young Frimpers, attacking mid, or winger, I like

my full backs tall and tough in todays game.

As regards fat Charlie ? don’t think he’s going anywhere, the huns

    are stuck with him.

Barry Fry is a football anachronism. SPFL and League 1 puts an invisible cap on value, just like certain post codes do on houses.

Only a 40m player if he plays successfully for more than one season in THE Premiership

Ally McCoist insists Rangers would find it very difficult to reject a huge offer for Alfredo Morelos on the eve of the new season – because he’s still not convinced his former club can trust their striker’s discipline (Daily Record).

    _______________________________________________________________________________

The above from the Daily Ranger, a truly laugh out loud moment even for the Fat Funster (Gardener)! It is precisely because he CANNOT be trusted with his on field (off field) discipline that there will be no HUGE offer for him. If Sevco don’t trust him even with the most lenient referees in the world why would any other club gamble with a ‘huge offer’? Morelos is truly the most hawked player ever to play football….

MICK – too many in Oz clearly think we dodged the bullet entirely. Just back from a walk: 95% of adults have masks, 5% of youths do. The message isn’t translating thru. Mibby complete shutdown for 2weeks and take the discomfort that brings, to get us clean again. Yet the experts must know better.

On squad, am happy we have Barkas, and in Connell and Soro we have two belters in waiting. Gutman seems to be ripping it up in the US so bring him back to compete with Taylor, who’s improving all the time. Still puzzled why Jozo went as he’s not re-signed anywhere else. NFL says let go to improve that area…what with, tho, redeployed mids like Nir ?

As we guessed, Sky Sports dining out on the huns, (he’s doing such a good job up there),we should have been the first game of the new season, unfurling the League Flag.

    Ah, here we go.

The transfer window wouldn’t be the transfer window without the biscuit tin narrative being wheeled out.

What does it say that the guy does his negotiating via Twitter?

If Celtic have a £5m bid on the table they should cut it to £4m and give the guy a 24 hour deadline to accept it lest it be withdrawn.

It’s a bit like what we’re seeing with Moreloss currently, they’re desperate to sell.

Forgot about you, haven’t heard from you for yonks, and many

    others Aussie Tims.

    Maybe it’s the lockdown blues.eh?

That colour would make anybody sick lol.

Know what you’re saying regards young and old but what about those

middle aged women taunting the police and refusing to wear a mask

while filming it all and proving how dimwitted they are by posting the

    confrontation on twitter.

But.. but.. having the gall to call the police when news media people

surrounded their house and asked them why they wouldn’t wear a mask.

Answer… it’s our human rights not to wear one.

I despair, really I do, how many rights do you have when your lying stiff

    in a wooden box ?

  13. Watching the Bhoys the other day, apart from 3players we have a decent squad especially to play and win in the SPL,The big problem is the defence,we definitely need another left back and a Centre Half and have Connell Karamoka ,Bayo in the squad ,don’t loan any off them 3

  14. Just an interesting point for Sunday…. we will have a bench of 9 players and can make 5 subs. This could be interesting.

    My prediction:

Bain, Frimpong, Jullien, Ajer, Taylor, Brown, McGregor, Forrest, Christie, Elyounoussi, Edouard

    Bench:

Hazard, Bitton, Elhamed, Ntcham, Soro, Klimala, Dembele, McInroy, Connell

Would be great to see more use of the bench for rotation purposes. Our squad is so strong.

  15. I’m sure it’s been talked about and I’ve missed it…..

but, how come the huns are this Seasons “curtain-raiser”????

I’m sure it’s been talked about and I’ve missed it…..

but, how come the huns are this Seasons “curtain-raiser”????

Well to be fair to them they’ve been desperately trying since 2012 to raise cash, raise the body of RFC (RIP), so raising the curtain is tame in comparison

  17. So Frank McAvennie reckons French Eddy ‘could’ be wanting away judging by his pre-season vibes and effort.

Now everyone is entitled to their opinion and I have no doubt that Frank will hear plenty of stuff not available to meer mortals like me.

I love Frank but if Charlie Nicholas had said this he would be getting slaughtered.

My god I seriously hope there is nothing in this.

For all we have many great players this [French Eddy] is the one that could make or break our historic season.

  19. Sky TV have for a number of years shown them first, they have failed to even mention that this game against Hamilton will see the league flag raised for winning the league, it doesnt suit their agenda, it is a hun organisation populated by the same.

  20. BANKIEBHOY1 on 30TH JULY 2020 10:44 AM

Probably because Sky see Steven Gerrard as the main attraction.

They want to show their subscription base Scottish Footballs flagship celeb face.

I am not joking here by the way and I seem to remember Neil Lennon having a rant about such issues after the first glasgow derby last season.

The only way we could muscle the sycophantic sky sports narrative away from Gerrard is if we put David Beckham in as head coach.

Sky do not care about Scottish Football and certainly do not care for Celtic.

  21. To be fair to French Eddy if he were so desperate to get away, he would have gone straight to France at the start of the lock down, he didn’t he stayed in Scotland. I’d imagine Frank has no more ‘insight’ than the walloper mentioned in your post, click bait tabloid nonsense.

French Eddy could be going (he will sometime) but everyone who has met him, worked with him say he’s a nice guy and a consummate professional; it’s not in his nature to ‘down tools’. Could he be a professional who has not played for 4 months, away form home a very young guy and just needs a bit more time to get up to speed?

I agree with te posts on young Frimpong . There was one incident in the Ross co. game when he made up 5 yards on their CF to get to the ball first , only to be taken out with a wee nudge, and Broony had to bring the CF down on the edge of the box to prevent e goalscoring chance.
