Foundation, Jozo, rest or pay consequences

79

Over 100 volunteers will be at and around Celtic Park tomorrow for the Foundation bucket collection. Do me a favour, thank them for what they’re doing on our behalf. The work of the Foundation is changing lives for the better. This month it reaches parts of our own community who really need the help. It’s a great thing.

It’s no surprise Jozo Simunovic is attracting interest. After an injury-riddled start to his Celtic career he’s shown why we paid so much money for him. Torino could have had him in the summer for the same price we bought him, but that opportunity passed. Since then Jozo’s never looked back. It’s unlikely the Italian’s budget stretches to his current value.

You’ll remember the discord here when he signed in summer 2015. Even then he had an injury record, while a Guardian journo from the Balkans rubbished him. Right now he’s the same age (22) Virgil van Dijk was when he joined Celtic, and he’s a better player than Virgil was at this stage.

Paul Hartley’s Dundee were in the middle of a six game losing streak when we beat them 0-1 at Dens in October. Since then they’ve lost only one in six, to a 92nd minute goal at Ibrox, so you know we’ll be forced to work for whatever we get.

I’m also concerned about playing our fifth game in 14 days, and for the congestion that lies ahead. We will need to rest limbs or pay the consequence.

Jozo has done well but there is room for much improvement. He is nowhere near the class of Virgil. If he ends up being half the player VVD is he will be some player.

TLhere was room for improvement in VVD and Denayer when they first joined also.Jozo looks a cracker.

Virgil became a very good player for Celtic during (towards the end of) his first season; I would reckon at the age he is and the stage of his development Jozo is marginally better; more calm and composed than VVD on the ball and, IMHO, a better tackler.

If he trains on and develops as well as VVD he could be as good, if not better.

Isn’t it grand that we are now debating if one of our current centre half’s is as good as a player being rated at £40M in the English press?

Kris McGurk, chairman of Regimental Blues, said that he was issued with a ‘threat to life notice’ by Police Scotland at 1.30am on Thursday, December 15.

You would need to be a right”Badyin”for the Polis to be threatening you while you were in your scratcher.

or a tim (although, by their definition, I suspect that would probably amount to the same thing …)

Once Jozo is a regular first team pick. Helps our goalie keep a record in shut outs and scores semi regularly then he will be in the same league as big Virgil. Far from it imho

  9. Lads,

hugely disappointing performances from a couple of Nicky Henderson hot-pots last weekend, and can’t see that repeating itself today. I fully expect to see Buveur Dair (12:20) and Top Notch (1:15) winning comfortably, but for the nap it’s a Philip Hobbs runner:
