Four games stand between Celtic and more history

332

‘The magic of the Cup’ was perhaps missing as Celtic eased Brechin City out of the competition on Saturday but the occasion provided Brendan Rodgers with the perfect opportunity to exercise limbs in competitive action for the first time in three weeks.

Four games now stand between Celtic and a second consecutive treble, at least one of which will be at home (to Partick Thistle), with two at neutral Hampden, should we get there. Celtic have won six on the bounce at Hampden since Tom Rogic’s penalty missed the target in the Scottish Cup semi-final of 2016. Whatever mental block we had at the place before Brendan arrived, it is well and truly sorted now.

More about Thistle tomorrow. They may be second bottom of the league but there are reasons to believe tomorrow’s game at Firhill will not be straightforward.

It occurs to me that you and I have talked about making history so often in recently.  These truly are incredible times.

I see Chris McCart has been busy with plans for a ‘colts’ team to enter the bottom tier of Scottish football.  Not sure how this would workout but I just hope the hoards of conservatives (small c) in our game don’t block an innovative change without just cause.

NEW CQN PODCAST OUT TONIGHT WITH THE ORIGINAL HOLY GOALIE, JOHN FALLON

A Celtic State of Mind presents its 31st instalment of insightful discussion around the culture of Celtic Football Club, the city of Glasgow, and fans of the reigning treble-winning Scottish champions.

Paul John Dykes and Kevin Graham are joined by Lisbon Lion, John Fallon, at The Penalty Spot in Glasgow.

CQN_GREENOCK_0054

The interview took place as part of A Celtic State of Mind’s first live event – Five-a-sides at The Penalty Spot – and, as such, there is some background noise (including mobile interference – apologies) from the audience.

John – The Original Holy Goalie – discusses pay disputes, bonus rows, cigarettes & alcohol at Seamill, breaking up The Lisbon Lions and The Quality Street Gang, the battle of Montevideo, his volatile relationship with Jock Stein, and he finally tells the full story behind his European Cup winners’ medal.

The CQN Podcast has gone from strength-to-strength over the last few months, and there are many more guests lined up in the months ahead from the world of sport, music, film, art, broadcasting, literature and politics.

Our first two editions of 2018 have attracted huge audiences for the interviews with former Celtic Director Tom Grant them politician and life long Celtic supporter Tommy Sheridan, who likes a rant!

Talking about rants, we hand over to the Original Holy Goalie, when it comes to matters concerning Celtic, he has an opinion on everything. Legend!

SNP good, anyone who dares to call out a non-SNP or even criticise such a post-bad.

The much missed BARCA MOLE and I discussed this often.

    It’s like the Nuremberg rallies.

I don’t get this. You won’t go to see your team because they lied down to the Masonic anti-Irish establishment in Scotland.

    Yet you defend Black’s comments?

    —————————————————————–

I didn’t defend it – I called the phrase daft if you read my post correctly but I have also heard Irish born/heritage friends use the term “Plastic Paddies” when describing other Irish people or Irish themed pubs, etc. Yes she would be better advised to choose her words more carefully but I am not going to jump on the offended bus over this.

Incidentally, I’ve never claimed the “team lied down to Masonic anti-Irish establishment in Scotland”. I do however, believe the plc board should do a lot more to challenge the hun cheating and the SFA cover up. Team or PLC board??? Seems Mhairi Black’s not the only one who should be careful with their choice or words.

  3. Point of order.

    Mhairi black isn’t working class.

She’s from a thorougly middle class background.

I’m not sure why she tries to hide the fact or pretends to be something she isn’t.

The irony is too obvious to need stating.

I bow to your superior knowledge of all thing’s MB but I understand she went to Lourdes Secondary School as did quite a few of my solidly working class cousins. She does support Partick Thistle so that’s probably the clincher.

Amateur hour again at the Strong Rangers Association. Took three months to speak to a guy who was never going to take the job. Meanwhile Paul Lambert, who was available all this time gets a job somewhere else.

Now we will end up with serial failure gies-a-job McLeish.

I’m sure that wasn’t the plan all along…..

  7. I heard a radio interview with Mhari Black where she said she comes from a catholic family of which many support Celtic. Labourites dont like her because she’s SNP and a strong personality and a good speaker.

Her politics seen very like old labour socialism with a bit of independence thrown in. Haven’t seen her comments but I will guarantee they weren’t sectarian in anyway. More likely her targets will be those support a free Ireland but dont want the same for Scotland.

  8. Remember when Billy Connolly claimed to be a Jags supporter in is cartoon strip. Well we didnt buy that either.

Why should she have to explain? She’s a young pretty raw working class women who says what she feels and the occasional daft phrase spills out – so what and we’ve all been there, haven’t we? I may not agree with everything that trips out of her mouth but at least she not another identikit politician. For what it’s worth, I remember when Irish themed pubs were opening at the rate of knots in the late nineties, they were often referred to as Plastic Paddy pubs mainly by people I knew who were either Irish born or by heritage. Quite frankly, there are bigger things happening in the world of politics to get your knickers twisted over ffs.

    ——————————————————————————————-

“Why should she have to explain?”

She should have to explain because she’s an MP (OK – part-time MP) on £75k a year who seems to be using the platform she has to attack other people’s cultural identity in a country that has a clear problem (current as well as historical) with racism against people with an Irish background.

“She’s a young pretty raw working class women who says what she feels and the occasional daft phrase spills”.

Is she? We’re told frequently how smart and well-educated she is. First class degree in Politics isn’t it? Personally I don’t care which version we’re to believe – young hothead or educated motormouth. That doesn’t allow her to attack other cultures. Unless you’re saying that the young and uncouth can say what they want without response?

“..so what and we’ve all been there, haven’t we?”

No. We all haven’t. I certainly wasn’t taught to be so utterly disrespectful to people of different ethnic backgrounds. Has she forgotten the party line? One Scotland Many Cultures….unless you’re Irish, of course?

If she was talking about 2nd or 3rd generation Afro-Caribbeans, Pakistanis and called them “plastic Rastas” or “plastic Pakistanis” – do you think for a second she’d get away with that? Of course not – because everyone would see right through it and recognise it for what it is – racism, bigotry.

    Think again.

She’s happy to stand up for people who identify as lesbians, transgender etc. but she does not want to extend parity of esteem to those with an Irish background. Like all bigots, she doesn’t recognise she’s is a bigot. Someone in her party should be calling her out. But they won’t want to draw any attention to it.

There are bigger things happening in the world but this is the kind of remark we only used to expect from Britain First, BNP, etc. so well-worthy of comment in a country where sectarianism and Irish racism are still openly accepted. Her remarks only reinforce that acceptance.

BTW – I wear very well-pressed boxers that are never twisted.

Reading back I’m agreeing with the arguments criticising Black’s comment.

At a disadvantage though as I don’t know the context in which she used the expression.

    Can anyone enlighten me?

  16. Well, I’m not sure what constitutes middle class in this day and age…

In fact the old tags for me are very much out of date except the the gentrified Upper Classes and The Multi-millionaire Professional middle classes.

Since Margret Thatcher’s election in ’79, there has been a dedicated and deliberate attempt to destroy Britian’s working class…

My Uncle (a professional and a civil servant) used to tease me and my cousin with a rhyme, in our uncompromising socialist days…

~ The working class can kiss my @$$ I’ve got my foreman’s job at last… ~

We all should work like dogs go into debt to maintain this “aspirational” life style…

People who aspire are good, right?

I’ve met many middle-class people, I’ve heard Mhairi Black speak, she’s never middle class or maybe she’s a very good actor…

    IMO Of course:))

  17. McLeish, should never be offered the Scotland job,The S F A should show a bit of ambition, appoint Jim McIntyre, and John Hughes,to manage Scotland, forget about ex Sevco players, there are plenty of them spouting nonsense on the media, and they don’t make a good job of that either,

I wonder what those who still cling to the existence of a class system in the UK think with regard to the now “global” system of industry and manfacturing.

The working class of the UK are kids in places like Bangladesh and China for example.

The “struggle” left the UK a long time ago.

We are in unchartered territory and clinging to expressions like “working” and “middle” class is, to put it politely, out of date.

I’ve also wondered why the middle class didn’t work…..
