Four games stand between Celtic and more history

332

‘The magic of the Cup’ was perhaps missing as Celtic eased Brechin City out of the competition on Saturday but the occasion provided Brendan Rodgers with the perfect opportunity to exercise limbs in competitive action for the first time in three weeks.

Four games now stand between Celtic and a second consecutive treble, at least one of which will be at home (to Partick Thistle), with two at neutral Hampden, should we get there. Celtic have won six on the bounce at Hampden since Tom Rogic’s penalty missed the target in the Scottish Cup semi-final of 2016. Whatever mental block we had at the place before Brendan arrived, it is well and truly sorted now.

More about Thistle tomorrow. They may be second bottom of the league but there are reasons to believe tomorrow’s game at Firhill will not be straightforward.

It occurs to me that you and I have talked about making history so often in recently.  These truly are incredible times.

I see Chris McCart has been busy with plans for a ‘colts’ team to enter the bottom tier of Scottish football.  Not sure how this would workout but I just hope the hoards of conservatives (small c) in our game don’t block an innovative change without just cause.

The interview took place as part of A Celtic State of Mind’s first live event – Five-a-sides at The Penalty Spot – and, as such, there is some background noise (including mobile interference – apologies) from the audience.

John – The Original Holy Goalie – discusses pay disputes, bonus rows, cigarettes & alcohol at Seamill, breaking up The Lisbon Lions and The Quality Street Gang, the battle of Montevideo, his volatile relationship with Jock Stein, and he finally tells the full story behind his European Cup winners’ medal.

The CQN Podcast has gone from strength-to-strength over the last few months, and there are many more guests lined up in the months ahead from the world of sport, music, film, art, broadcasting, literature and politics.

Our first two editions of 2018 have attracted huge audiences for the interviews with former Celtic Director Tom Grant them politician and life long Celtic supporter Tommy Sheridan, who likes a rant!

Talking about rants, we hand over to the Original Holy Goalie, when it comes to matters concerning Celtic, he has an opinion on everything. Legend!

The stupids who run our game, are not fit for purpose.

There may be factors of which I am not aware for the main thrust of your post but it would be very difficult to argue wit this:

  6. From the BBC website. The shameless attempt to try and make Sevco relevant is off the chart!

How can McLean have moved from Carrow Road when he has never actually been to Carrow Road???????

    WOW

Norwich City have signed Aberdeen midfielder Kenny McLean on a three-and-a-half-year deal for an undisclosed fee and loaned him back to the Scottish side until the end of the season.

The 26-year-old has made 25 appearances for Aberdeen this term but was due to run out of contract in the summer.

He joined the Dons from St Mirren in 2015 and has won two Scotland caps.

“After watching them on the pitch, it seems perfect for the style I want to play,” McLean told the club website.

“I’ll need to adapt to the way he (Norwich boss Daniel Farke) wants to play, and that takes time, so doing that in pre-season is right for me.”

McLean is the third player to move between Carrow Road and the Scottish Premiership in January, with Steven Naismith and Russell Martin joining Hearts and Rangers respectively on loan.

  7. We play Hearts next Tuesday (30th).

Brendan need the Wednesday off to get the WD40 on the revolving door!!

  8. Cleaning out the loft yesterday, I came across a few Celtic items which got me to wondering.

I have a pint Celtic glass celebrating 7 in a row , that was when we were going for 10 and a discovered 2 fabulous Whisky glass with the club crest on them from the centenary 1988. Anyway to get to the point, what if we had some kind of ebay system going with old stuff like that with all the money raised going to charity.

I feel sure that would be successful and a win win situation as we could buy stuff we fancied and charities would reap the benefit.

    Any thoughts welcome.

  9. I feel great unease at Mhairi Black’s comments.

I feel equal unease about several of the personal comments subsequently made on here about her.

PS Alasdair Mc’s comments ref ‘class’ in the global mess of a marketplace are well worthy of reading.

  11. CultsBhoy- Last of the famous international PlayBhoys on

I’m always glad to see players leave Celtic when it is in their interest to get pitch time elsewhere and in the team’s interest to free up wages. This should always be the first step in any transfer window.

The who comes in bit much trickier. I’m hoping for a forward and a defender – both central players.

I’m hoping we also pick up John McGinn – hes a Celtic type player and the perfect understudy to SB.

Mostly though I’m looking forward to guys being given a chance – like Ralston, NCham etc who are ready to stake their place.

Im expecting final day’surprise signing’ as EPL shake down will have us in a position to offer European football to guys who may not necessarily have Celtic as firts choice. Brendan has the contacts to make this happen.

  12. Did I hear correctly? Did Charlie Nicholas just state on Sky that Regan should resign as the mess around the appointment of a Scottish manager is all down to him. He also stated that Regan’s dismissal of Gordon Strachan was disgraceful. Appears Charlie can get it correct sometime.

  13. Again I’m surprised that CQN’ers should be surprised about the comments Mhairi Black has made.

Agree 100% Jamesgang. I’m also uncomfortable with some of the personal comments made about her. We should be above that.

    HH.

  14. Canny say I was impressed with John McGinn, ok maybe yesterday he had an off day but headless chicken springs to mind, nowhere near Broonie class. Persevere with Kouassi or look elsewhere, he’s just not got it. Cant imagine what European opposition would do to him. Not for me.

  15. Just to clarify a previous statement about Regan. Nicholas said that Regan dismissed Gordan by phone. That was what upset Charlie.

  16. When are celtic going to strengthen the team , who as far as I am concerned are not performing to the standard we did last season . This league is not won yet , we still have many tricky games ahead of us , including against the team we should be miles in front of ,but who are still challengers in the mix to take points of us . Anyone on here who thinks we only need one signing ,think again we need 2or3 quality signings , but celtic being celtic , and having seen this January transfer debacle on to many occasions , it would be of no surprise to me ,and shouldn’t be a surprise to very many others also , if our business is done , This gamble is gonna backfire on us sometime .

  17. Prediction: One of the biggest talking points among the fans by the end of the Hearts game will be our pitch. I feel sorry for the groundstaff in these conditions and this is not a criticism but it was cutting up during the warm up on Saturday, the UV lights won’t fix anything of any note by the weekend when we take on Hibs after 7 days of snow and torrential rain, and they’ll have about 70 hours till Hearts come to town. It’ll be a mess.

10 days to patch it up for Thistle in the cup and then Zenit on the Thursday.

Best pitch we’ll play on in February is Kilmarnock’s! ;-)

  18. John McGinn nowhere near Celtic class for me, was awful yesterday. Eboue Kouassi either needs to get some game time or be sold and he looks better in the short outings he has had than McGinn

  19. BK- correct, our passing from the back tactic, was no good at Swinecastle, and at CP v Sevco, as pitches were poor.Might need to be more direct at times.

  20. You can bet your last pound, McLeish will be on as many radio /BT/Sky games this week, hawking himself for the Scotland job, shameless hun

  21. SP- made me laugh there, nobody likes silky football more than me, but i don’t know how many times i said that at Swinecastle.

  22. HT…

A well informed read, it doesn’t seem that long ago we were in George’s square.

If my memory serves me right there was a few Motherwell fans that attended as well.

I actually ended up walking to the game with the green brigade after the demo ;))))))))

  23. !!BADA BING!!

The old boy next to me at Douglas Park was roaring that the whole night and when Martin Canning eventually did launch it he turns to me and says “ah hate when they die that”

Mad auld Hamilton supporter funny as

  24. Hibs were poor yesterday, that pitch didn’t help but they lacked quality up front. I wonder if the Stokes carry-on will affect them. Mcginn wasn’t great but there was nothing in front of him. Regardless, I don’t think Brendan has ever been interested in him.

  25. B67- undersoil heating renewed last close season, work done i think during last few weeks, finished in summer

  26. Cheers BB knew they’d done something, thought they had injected the synthetic fibres already.
