Four games stand between Celtic and more history

332

‘The magic of the Cup’ was perhaps missing as Celtic eased Brechin City out of the competition on Saturday but the occasion provided Brendan Rodgers with the perfect opportunity to exercise limbs in competitive action for the first time in three weeks.

Four games now stand between Celtic and a second consecutive treble, at least one of which will be at home (to Partick Thistle), with two at neutral Hampden, should we get there. Celtic have won six on the bounce at Hampden since Tom Rogic’s penalty missed the target in the Scottish Cup semi-final of 2016. Whatever mental block we had at the place before Brendan arrived, it is well and truly sorted now.

More about Thistle tomorrow. They may be second bottom of the league but there are reasons to believe tomorrow’s game at Firhill will not be straightforward.

It occurs to me that you and I have talked about making history so often in recently.  These truly are incredible times.

I see Chris McCart has been busy with plans for a ‘colts’ team to enter the bottom tier of Scottish football.  Not sure how this would workout but I just hope the hoards of conservatives (small c) in our game don’t block an innovative change without just cause.

NEW CQN PODCAST OUT TONIGHT WITH THE ORIGINAL HOLY GOALIE, JOHN FALLON

A Celtic State of Mind presents its 31st instalment of insightful discussion around the culture of Celtic Football Club, the city of Glasgow, and fans of the reigning treble-winning Scottish champions.

Paul John Dykes and Kevin Graham are joined by Lisbon Lion, John Fallon, at The Penalty Spot in Glasgow.

CQN_GREENOCK_0054

The interview took place as part of A Celtic State of Mind’s first live event – Five-a-sides at The Penalty Spot – and, as such, there is some background noise (including mobile interference – apologies) from the audience.

John – The Original Holy Goalie – discusses pay disputes, bonus rows, cigarettes & alcohol at Seamill, breaking up The Lisbon Lions and The Quality Street Gang, the battle of Montevideo, his volatile relationship with Jock Stein, and he finally tells the full story behind his European Cup winners’ medal.

The CQN Podcast has gone from strength-to-strength over the last few months, and there are many more guests lined up in the months ahead from the world of sport, music, film, art, broadcasting, literature and politics.

Our first two editions of 2018 have attracted huge audiences for the interviews with former Celtic Director Tom Grant them politician and life long Celtic supporter Tommy Sheridan, who likes a rant!

Talking about rants, we hand over to the Original Holy Goalie, when it comes to matters concerning Celtic, he has an opinion on everything. Legend!

  1. One other thing, a liquidated club walked into our league 2

No idea why we should find it acceptable that our colts should do the same

    And

The liquidated clubs 2nd team either, after all they forced the cancellation of reserve league football years ago

    Cowiebhoy.

My thoughts too. Sense of entitlement here.

Why should 2 clubs be given preferential treatment?.

    Hail Hail

  3. I’m all for the Colts playing in League 2 or whatever. I would have thought the offer should be open to the other SPFL clubs. I wonder why the deid team wish to be involved, as they destroyed the Reserve League, didn’t they?

  4. There seems to be no issue in Sevco directors holding shares in other clubs

Why don’t some Celtic directors buy shares in someone like Albion Rovers, and play our Colts through them ???

    Thinking ooot the box :-))))))

Regards Mhairi Black. When I was a taxi driver I picked her up a couple of times from her folks house. We spoke about football she knew I was a tim and she never made any poor remarks about anything Celtic. She does speak the same way in life as she does in the commons, not a put on accent. Ernie her parents house is as close to a golf course as mine was when I was growing up and it didn’t make me a fake or phoney. I actually found her polite, knowledgeable and personable. If we had more young people with her drive and desire to change things this country might stand a chance. By the way I have never voted SNP and probably never will.

Yes they did (didn’t fancy 10iar), then Sevco pulled out of the Development League.

Now they want to be first in the queue for the Colts… can’t believe Celtic are working along side them on this.

    It’s a travesty…

“Haven’t seen her comments but I will guarantee they weren’t sectarian in anyway. More likely her targets will be those support a free Ireland but dont want the same for Scotland.”

You haven’t read them but you are offering guarantees???

I have read her words and i can guarantee that they had nothing to do with those who support a free Ireland but can distinguish easily the fact that Scotland’s union was of a vastly different order to Ireland’s invasion.

It is pure dogma and “my party righ or wrong” to give her the carte blanche backing you gave her.

Her comments were demeaning, verging on bigotry, and she remains unapologetic about them. Her words were directed at people who had dared to criticise her for her previous views.

Now I dissociate myself from any demeaning criticism of her gender or her looks, just as others should have when Kezia Dugdale was getting similar treatment, but she does not realise the offence she has caused and she has indiscriminately suggested that all her critics were “plastic” in their Irish identity. Out of the mouth of a so-called Unionist politician, such words would be quickly and unequivocally condemned by all here. But some are conflicted by their loyalties and are willing to give her a bye because she is young (she’s old enough to be an MP), or a girl (sexist excuse), or, mostly, because she is pro-independence and speaks with a Glesgae accent, neither of which facts, excuse her words.

read them first and then make your judgement.

  12. Point of order

The Irish are not a distinctive race from say the Scots for example.

There is no Irish or catholic gene.

Its cultural, therefore sectarian. Not racist.

As much as the Irish want to (and SNP want to as far as “scottishness” is concerned) it is not genetic.

  13. i think Arsenal may have got the best of Mkhitaryan/Sanchez deal.

Mkhitaryan was stifled by a manager who plays negative football and thought i am no fan of Wenger he does encourage positive players. He has the skills to light it up.

Sanchez deal will cause ripples of discontent in Man U locker room with his ridiculous salary and he is not seen by many as a team player. His behaviour at Arsenal in the last year created a lot of friction in the team.

  14. Mhairi Black. The best politician in Britain for standing up for the rights of the disenfranchised, like single mothers, women who have had their pensions ripped from them, the unemployed. These are all things that Labour should be doing. The people on their high horse, about Black, have obviously not heard her in the Commons, lambasting those who take peoples rights and Pensions away.3 Times she has tried to get a Bill passed to give Women their rightful Pensions, while Labour vote against her.Ask the people of Paisley in her constituency, what they think about her.One of the hardest working people in Parliament, yet some numpties ,probably Labour voters, want to have a jolly about her appearance.

Calling someone brought up a Catholic, educated as one,a Bigot,is Hun talk.

Maybe you dont like SNP,but many of them are doing great for the people they represent.Dont class all the same.Especially if you are a Labour voter.Far too much in your closet.Plastic Tories.

All sorts of debates on here lately and not a word from Ernie, mention the SNP and on he is in a flash.

*in all fairness to Ernie, there are some of us on here remember when the SNP were akin to the ulster unionists and that could be put down to cormack and his 9 Edinburgh councillor colleagues who wanted to, in future enoch powel style, repatriate the Irish in Scotland.

However, it should be noted that the first president of the SNP Robert Bontine Cunninghame Graham was also the first ever socialist member of the UK Parliament and a founder and the first president, of the Scottish Labour Party.

Also, there are 2 streets named after him in Brucehill, a monument and the Cunninghame Graham Memorial, at Castlehill which are definitely not leafy suburbs in Dumbarton, near the family home at Ardoch.

The monument was removed due to vandalism in 1981 to Gartmore closer to the principal Graham estate in full view of the Wallace Monument in nearby Stirling, however the Cunninghame Graham Memorial Park at Castlehill (which is managed by the National Trust for Scotland) is still affectionately locally known as “the Mony”.

Another ridiculous analogy.I like to judge people by their actions, not what they say.Blacks actions in the job she performs are first rate.Maybe thats too much to bear for the thick Labour supporters on here that “Hear no evil, see no evil”from the party they support.
