Four games stand between Celtic and more history

332

‘The magic of the Cup’ was perhaps missing as Celtic eased Brechin City out of the competition on Saturday but the occasion provided Brendan Rodgers with the perfect opportunity to exercise limbs in competitive action for the first time in three weeks.

Four games now stand between Celtic and a second consecutive treble, at least one of which will be at home (to Partick Thistle), with two at neutral Hampden, should we get there. Celtic have won six on the bounce at Hampden since Tom Rogic’s penalty missed the target in the Scottish Cup semi-final of 2016. Whatever mental block we had at the place before Brendan arrived, it is well and truly sorted now.

More about Thistle tomorrow. They may be second bottom of the league but there are reasons to believe tomorrow’s game at Firhill will not be straightforward.

It occurs to me that you and I have talked about making history so often in recently.  These truly are incredible times.

I see Chris McCart has been busy with plans for a ‘colts’ team to enter the bottom tier of Scottish football.  Not sure how this would workout but I just hope the hoards of conservatives (small c) in our game don’t block an innovative change without just cause.

NEW CQN PODCAST OUT TONIGHT WITH THE ORIGINAL HOLY GOALIE, JOHN FALLON

A Celtic State of Mind presents its 31st instalment of insightful discussion around the culture of Celtic Football Club, the city of Glasgow, and fans of the reigning treble-winning Scottish champions.

Paul John Dykes and Kevin Graham are joined by Lisbon Lion, John Fallon, at The Penalty Spot in Glasgow.

CQN_GREENOCK_0054

The interview took place as part of A Celtic State of Mind’s first live event – Five-a-sides at The Penalty Spot – and, as such, there is some background noise (including mobile interference – apologies) from the audience.

John – The Original Holy Goalie – discusses pay disputes, bonus rows, cigarettes & alcohol at Seamill, breaking up The Lisbon Lions and The Quality Street Gang, the battle of Montevideo, his volatile relationship with Jock Stein, and he finally tells the full story behind his European Cup winners’ medal.

The CQN Podcast has gone from strength-to-strength over the last few months, and there are many more guests lined up in the months ahead from the world of sport, music, film, art, broadcasting, literature and politics.

Our first two editions of 2018 have attracted huge audiences for the interviews with former Celtic Director Tom Grant them politician and life long Celtic supporter Tommy Sheridan, who likes a rant!

Talking about rants, we hand over to the Original Holy Goalie, when it comes to matters concerning Celtic, he has an opinion on everything. Legend!

Was Alex Salmond in the Labour hierarchy? Both he and gordon Brown made a similar blunder but if you are politically one-eyed, you will highlight one only.

*didn’t the latter bestow a knight’s bachelor and peerage on bader and the Ballymena demagogue respectively.

“Not any different from your guarantee that her comments are Racist,Sectarian.Ridiculous post.’

I gave no guarantee that those characteristics were present. The ridiculousness is yours in attributing those statements to me. i know what I wrote and the words I carefully chose.

My words were not fit for your purpose so you invented some new ones that you wish I had used.

Being a Catholic, if she still is, does not prevent her from being a bigot. Being right on other subjects does not stop her being dead wrong on this one.

So if she is right on ,say 40 subjects, and wrong on one,you and your like want the whole focus to be on the wrong one.Sorry, not for me.I have never seen a post on here commending the girl for all the great work she does, but the offended are on like a pack of Huns for something that offends them.

    Away and gies peace.

To be fair- he is also here when Dermot Desmond and Peter Lawwell are being criticised- but he does have a particular doggedness when it comes to SNP matters. When he produces the OTT stuff, with personal criticism, it does not make posters stop and think- it just puts them off.

  5. I find it astonishing that Celtic supporters who are supposed to be the vanguard of anti bigotry in Scotland pay £49 to go see Scotland’s bigot mascot in action.

Yes I have heard Mhairi Black in the house of Commons. She has plenty time to prepare for her few speeches . I actually quite like her passion and fire and I agreed with most of what she was saying. Labour could do with people with her. Is she a bigot ? I honestly don’t know. Do We keep giving her the benefit of doubt ?

Yes she laid into the Tories over welfare etc. I remember thinking at the time she should put a guest appearance at Holyrood and give the exact same lambasting to Nicola and the Scottish government. Has she forgotten that Scotland can top up any UK benefit or create new benefits . It’s part of the powers that they were screaming for, which they now have.

    HH.

PS : I was also uncomfortable with the personal attacks on Esther McVey on here last week, and McDonnell should hold his head in shame. Lynching women talk is never acceptable even if you’re only repeating it.

This site is for Celtic matters largely. When I spost on political sites, I will commend all those who speak and act in favour of the disadvantaged. But when it comes to football matters, Mhairi has made no dissenting comment on her party’s OBaF Act, even when it was her constituents who were being persecuted under the Act and, this time, she has made an Anti-Irish identity comment, without the excuse of being young and immature, and she has been called out by other pro-Scottish Independence capaigners, such as Phil Macgiollabhain and the guys at Irish Voice.

Political loyalties should not prevent you from calling out one of your own side when they are in error.

stairheed – any expression of Irishness was denigrated by the union – ‘plasticpaddy’ is one of many – thanks for the post.

I will not argue with you anymore on the subject. You are a Labour fanatic,as I used to be.That alone should bar you from disputing anything political.Show me one in your party that has fought so long and so hard for the cause of the underdog.

Should Mhari Black not be calling out the “brave Scottish people” who voted against Scotland being an independent nation before she starts calling us plastic Paddy’s ?

BTW. Her parents stay very close to Ralston Golf Club.

This is the whole crux of the problem.Everything has to do with the OBAF act.If Mother Theresa had voted for it,she would be a useless Hun ,with a great many on here.To me,one act does not make a government.

Dont try and hide behind the cover of “Its a football blog”You are quite prepared to wade in when it suits you.

Much like the “Plastic Labour”you espouse.

The discussion was nothing to do with who voted for whom. She made a bigoted remark and should be called out on it – as anyone else would be on here.

Since you brought it up though – your remark re: her working hard in Parliament for Paisley? She’s never there – she only turned up to vote in 20% of the votes in the last parliament. Last I heard her absences were “becoming an issue”.

In other news… Royal Alexandria Children’s Ward in Paisley to close. Shame Mhairi can’t intervene. Talk is cheap.

    Gents,

I was going to post then saw how things were going downhill a bit…..then thought well…

A bit of manners and consideration required – while maintaining vociferous disagreement, and even trading polite insults.

I find it too tiring arguing with a brick wall – but there has been merit in most stuff said here today from opposing “sides”.

We can apologise at a later stage for ill-advised terminology. As I think Mhairi Black should.

Anyway, one of the interesting views offered today was that Maths Teachers are not working class; they are middle class. Don’t know where to start with that one.

  26. Anyone on here with an opinion about Mhairi Black, actually live in her constituency, and know the work she does?

Try You Tube, under Mhairi Black, and see the work she does in Westminster,or dont, and just come on here with your ill informed posts.Probably about right.
