Fragile Celtic crack

362

After collecting one point from their previous five games, Livingston fans can scarcely believe the result and performance their side recorded against Celtic yesterday.  A goal from a breakaway on 25 minutes was enough to shatter Celtic’s early fluency.  For all the flattery achieved by pounding opponents at Celtic Park, there is a fragility about Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Andrew Shinnie nipped in front of Stephen Welsh before thrashing a shot high into the net.  The central defender should have done better but it was an excellent finish from Shinnie.  The move started when Celtic were exposed on the right as Livingston won possession in the middle of the field.

The way we setup, we are going to concede chances and goals on the counter; going behind should not have had the consequences that followed.  Instead of provoking a clinical reaction, Celtic’s early assured touch deserted them.

James McCarthy started his first game since May and is clearly well off pace.  Mikey Johnston came on for his first appearance of any sort since May, he also needs time before we can expect anything like his best.

While central mid took much of the focus, our wing play was no better.  Jota was significantly less effective against Livingston than against Betis on Thursday, and Liel Abada’s devastating runs into the box just didn’t happen.  The only real pass mark was for Joe Hart, who made an instinctive save that prevented the home side doubling their lead.

We won on nine consecutive visits to Livingston between 2001 and 2007 before an 11-year gap until the next visit.  Since returning to the West Lothian venue in 2018, we have played five, drawn three and lost twice.  I am not fond of blaming the pitch; we have ample access to artificial pitches to practice on.  Be ready next time.

So what now for our league challenge?  News from Ibrox that Motherwell took a point to limit the damage of the afternoon was a merciful relief.  A four-point gap is bad enough but six points would feel daunting.  We are still in the race largely due to the fact that our only genuine opponents are well below the form they enjoyed in the two previous seasons.  Whoever sorts out their form first will win the title.

Lots to consider, Ange.

Not sure if Jimmy Greaves would have scored for us yesterday.

Disappointing to miss the chance to go second, a point behind, and yet with the best goal difference.

Livvy has been an awkward place for us in recent times, even though we put six past them at home not so long ago. Not buying this away form malarkey, had the referee not ruled out a perfectly good goal by Abada at Tyncecastle to put us 2-1 in front, I am sure we would have won that game. Your cheatin Hearts some might have said. Not me though. Anyways we have three increasingly difficult home games starting against Raith Rovers on Thursday and if we are still in the hunt for each of those trophies at the end of those matches things wont look so bad. One game at a time though

Bad day at the front office for sure. If we don’t score early we’re in trouble alright, fragile confidence. The longer that game went on yesterday, it didn’t go on past stalemate in defeat.

As for the SFA Orangie Officials, forget it, the vast majority are representative of Scotland, filthy Hun sympathisers.

Celtic had five fwd players to Livingstones three defenders when the Orangie halted the play as Celtic went to take a quick free kick and make the most of any advantage left from the professional foul. The Orangie did what any Hun would do, slowed the play up, forbade any advantage. He didnt caution the Livingston player just gave him a chinwag buying time for any advantage to be nullified and rubbing Orange into the wound, reprimanded the Celtic players for attempting to take the free kick quickly.

AP had better take the gloves off and deliver mettle.

  10. Bhoy From The Boyne on

Hope to see Euan Henderson get a run out v Raith Rovers to see what he can do as an attacking midfielder / #8. Noticed he was on the bench v’s Betis. Out of contract May 2022 so imagine it is make or break for him this season at Celtic.

Would have preferred to have seen Scott Robertson in the hoops this season too, given our midfield shortage. He is receiving good reviews in English league 1 with Crewe.

That team cost us around £18m to bring in:

    Hart – £1m

    Juranovic – £2.5m

    CCV – loan

    Welsh – Academy

    Bolingoli – £2.75m

    McCarthy – out of contract

    Rogic – £400k

    Turnbull – £2.75m

    Abada – £3.6m

    Ajeti – £5m

    Jota – loan

To put that into context – Livingston’s reported annual income is c£1.8m! And that’s only 3 players away from what many might think is our best team – CalMac; Taylor and Kyogo (4 for those who think Julien/Starfelt should be ahead of Welsh). Football is like that – freak results – but happens too often to us!

On the rebuild, we really shouldn’t be as far away from a good squad of 24 players as we seem to be – with Bain (as back-up); Ralston; Taylor; Julien; CalMac; Rogic; Turnbull; Forrest and 12 signings, we should have a good core of 20 players there but we still seem very light – another summer where it looks like we got player recruitment wrong.

The two Sheffield Wednesday boys (surely Livingston away is tailor made for them as they’ll be used to blood and snotters battles?) and Scales look like another trio who’ll never get a chance (like Oko-Flex; O’Conner; Connel; Alafobi), Starfelt has been ropey and McCarthy and the Greek haven’t been fit (how unfit must these guys be if they aren’t ready when Mikey J and a blowing out their arses after an hour Turnbull and Rogic get a full 90).

Abada and Jota look like they have potential but a bit lightweight (and probably both best suited to right wing). Juranovic has a good pedigree, but Ralston’s impressed me more. CCV looks decent. Kyogo obviously looks good and Hart has reminded us what a goalkeeper who’ll get you out of a hole looks like! So far, more misses than hits though hopeful none of them (Starfelt and McCarthy look the most obvious) follow the DUFFY descent.

I like Ange and some of the football has been breath-taking. But so was some of the early John Barnes football. So far, it’s reminding me a bit of Ronny’s time – Plan A is brilliant when it works, but no plan B! I think he still needs time – he has spoken about all the background stuff that needs sorting (sports science, etc) which seems to now fall to him to do in the absence of a Director of Football! The Board need to get the finger out and get that sorted so Ange can focus on the team!

Is Strachan still consulting for us? I did wonder of McKay’s departure and the Board’s resistance to change may have seen that gig being made redundant! Of course they may let him announce his review findings and then employ him as a DoF to see it through…

Jimmy Greaves would have played on some dodgy pitches, against some very good defenders, and some hatchet men too, but I doubt if he ever was up against the type of referees both Stevie Chalmers and Bobby Lennox, his near contemporaries, faced. That said we were missing Kyogo, Jamesie and new bhoy Georgios yesterday, could do with them available soon.

The SNPcults own Growth Commission said there would be TEN YEARS of austerity after Indy. Knowing that they would tell any lie to obtain the break-up of the UK – e.g. the “thick” White Paper in 2014 stands out as a document of malicious fiction drawn up to deceive the people of Scotland, no doubt the austerity figure is more like TWENTY YEARS, and they know it!

Why, in a world of turmoil, the experience of the 2008 Global Financial Crash, and now the pandemic ravaging the strongest of economies, would any sane person play Russian Roulette with the livelihoods of their family, friends and colleagues, for a flag-waving freedumb extravaganza? It’s the stuff of madness will rip the guts out of Scotland.

If Scotland cuts the UK umbilical cord, we will become de facto bankrupt overnight, hanging on to Sterlingisation (it’s oor pound tae” – no it isn’t, it’s the Bank Of England pound) – which means no control of monetary policy, with a mountain of national debt and separated from its biggest market, the UK. Our government bonds will be junk and we will have the IMF ensconced from Iday-two in Edinburgh brokering loans at extortionate rates.

And still we hear ‘zoomers’ saying “let’s gie it try” – problem is you can’t – once you’re out, you’re out forever.

  14. SPIDEY101, AP needs another transfer window at the very least. Nothing was ever going to be plain sailing this season.

I like the cut of Ap’s jib and I dont think he’ll suffer fools for Celtic players gladly.

Don’t know about anyone else but I thought yesterday was a perfect storm in the making. Too many first players missing and with what was available, powder puff is never enough.

What a stupid, ignorant and lazy argument.

Do you ever wonder why the Irish who settled here, ‘the black country with the cold heart’, and successive generations of their descendants, not only did not support Scottish independence, but were distrustful and fearful of those who did?

Scotland is not Ireland. It’s an insult to the Irish to suggest that it is.

The problem you have is that there is no rational case for Scotland to leave the UK, hence your pathetic attempts to piggyback on the cause of Irish unity.

Playing on grass of anykind is better than the carpeted concrete Livi et al have to offer. These players we have dont take putting their career on a line lightly.

I was a young prospect playing a trial match at the behest of Joe Royle’s Oldham Athletic at the time. Hadn’t a clue what to expect but Colin Hendry suggested I play with my rubber small studded Puma’s. I tore my cruciate and medial ligament in a unfortunate challenge that would not have resulted in the damage done had the game been played on grass. Kept me out the game for 6 years.

Livi’s park is a disgrace to our professional game in Scotland and players are quite right not to apply themselves the same as they would on grass. Livi’s players have the ignorance and confidence that familiarity brings.

If anyone can explain the difference in skill, application, tenacity and confident attacking play that Celtic players have brought to their game this season albeit with mixed results I’ll bet attacking players trying to move at breathtaking speed arent only hampered by the astro turff physically, but mentally too.

In summary, don’t look too much into the Livi result in isolation but Celtic’s snowflakes need to show more mettle refgardless.

Unlike some,I will wait until we have some semblance of first team players back.Injuries have been horrendous. As I have said a couple of times, let’s see what Shaw has got in the midfield.Hopefully a run out on Thursday.Turnbull has been so hot and cold,he deserves the bench.Along with Rogic,we cannot afford 2 luxury players, especially when not performing.Mc Carthy again on Thursday. Will only get match fit playing matches.Same with Mikey, has to be given games when possible.Thursday an opportunity, along with Gio.

I will wait.I know how hard it’s been for the manager, new players, injuries,to get a rhythm going. We all said this at the start when he came in.

    ROLLING_STONE on 20TH SEPTEMBER 2021 1:08 PM

I do feel sorry for Ange.

The squad at his disposal chose the line up and formation yesterday and made it near impossible to change the game plan.

Swapping Bitton for Welsh and Soro for Mccarthy is window dressing. No other striker on the bench, no midfield option other than DMs.

Rogic and Turnbull are both known for an inability to go for 90 mins and yet because of our squad they have to play near enough 90 mins 3 games a week.

Our issues again find their genesis with the Board and running of the club.

First defeat to Hearts we only have 2 new players in the first 11, notwithstanding the shambles last year/players we had lost from last season’s squad.

Game against Sevco saw us sell two of our starters shortly after, play our debutant RB at LB and generally run out of steam after 20 mins with no options off the bench.

    Yesterday – see above.

Why did we wait till the last day of the window to sign our Greek striker? He therefore has no pre season and is not fit enough for a place on the bench by 19 Sept.

Between the above and sacking McKay our Board are trying their best to lose a league to an impecunious Sevco. We really are poorly run, but benefitted from our nearest rival dying. I think the Board are holding out hope for that eventuality to manifest itself again.

I am wondering about what his relationship may be with the players. Ange is kind of bluff/gruff Aussie – that goes down well there and he’s had success.

Japan is an authoritarian, hierarchical, & mostly respectful society, so not hard to imagine him fitting in there.

We know first-hand from what happened at Celtic last season and all we see and hear from the EPL, that British/European footballers are ‘another kettle of fish’ and expect to be treated differently – could he be having difficulty getting players on board? I don’t know – all I can say is that his demeanour has changed in recent interviews as he gets further in to the job – he has seemed less assured, less enthusiatic and is struggling for optimism.

Fifteen minutes in yesterday, I thought it was just a matter of time as we were on the front foot and they had already picked up some early yellows. But Abada’s awful cut back from a great position set the tone for the rest of the game.

Fifteen minutes to go and those minutes didn’t matter, we could have continued for fifteen hours without scoring.

When Livi away is going to script, why not change the script, adopt the chaos strategy. Put CCV and Biton up front and fire balls in from all angles. Try something different to break the monotony of the predictable. Maybe coaching pride doesn’t allow such thinking, but needs much Ange.

If there is one plus from yesterday it would be Joe Hart. The big fella has quickly become a much needed leader/character in the team.

The recent run of 5 games with only 1 win coincides with Taylor not playing more than 40 minutes.

I realise that Kyogo has missed 3 of these also but the energy and work rate ( esp off the ball ) of Taylor for anyone not watching through negative blinkered specs had been incredible this season and created so much space going forward whilst also supporting the midfield.

I thought Boli was decent yesterday and Adam too has played well but when watching the games live the work a rate and bravery in possession of our much maligned left back is the thing I really notice missing.

Has everyone on here suffered a brain freeze. Was it only me that read that Ange would need time to get us back.He would need time for the players to adapt. He would need a couple of windows to see who he needs, does not need. All the players he needs are sitting watching at the moment, how does that help the mythical timeline everyone agreed he needed. As usual, all useless platitudes, until it does not suit.

When you have brought in twelve new players and you are still short of numbers that’s not on the manager – that is a huge failure by the football department going back years. But then with no Director of Football it’s hardly a surprise.

Easy to point to Kyogo going out as our play regressing, but we were at our most effective with Ralston and Taylor as our full-backs. Since they have gone out our combination plays have not been the same. We are either putting in too many high crosses or falling back into the old habit of coming inside at the 18 yard line. Need to be getting to the byline more (Roberts style) or at least mixing up the deliveries – Ralston puts in a good low, hard cross which can be much harder to defend.

Would like to see Callum move forward when McCarthy gets up to speed. Nobody else seems to make the runs beyond the striker – again something that will disrupt a well-organised defence.

Speaking of defence – that’s a whole other issue!

There are non so blind that they cannot see.

It’s no longer about what Res12 sought but how Celtic handled it.

To the layman the simply lied, to the lawyer commenting on evidence it was it would be costly to prove in court not that they lied, but they lied deliberately. Proving such would be difficult, costly with no guarantee of success.

The point is the custodians lack any sense of probity and the thinking of the Sionnagh and his likes gives the Board every reason to act as they do.

The problem is exploring Res12 and its implications is too much like hard work for the lazy of thinking and Celtic depend on them to fill the coffers.

The connection between the decisions taken by those lacking probity and how that manifests itself on the field of play is all but lost to those for whom probity is a stranger in a strange land.
