Free money

Delighted and surprised of what I hear of the value of our new shirt sponsor, Dafabet, who become main sponsor, with their names on the front of the shirts, for the next four seasons. This is the best commercial deal every written in Scottish football.  Pretty much all revenue channels have been inching south for years, so being able to deliver a sponsorship deal well ahead of anything we’ve achieved before is hopefully a sign things are turning.

Bringing commercial deals like this into the club is the equivalent of what Brian Quinn once called ‘free money’. It’s total margin, without any fulfilment cost, and doesn’t rely on the fans putting their hands in their pockets.

More free money

Offering Magners the shoulder position on the jersey is a ‘more free money’ opportunity. The Irish cider makers are also here for the next four seasons, extending their stay on the shirts to seven years. I’d never considered a back of the shirt sponsor, but it’s clearly a prime slot for TV coverage. And it also doesn’t rely on fans putting their hands in their pockets.

Magners ‘get’ Celtic. They understand what we’re about and our social mission. Impressively so, for such a large organisation. Really pleased they remain in place.

    Jobo,

Don’t know what you are complaining about:-)

Forgot how many they had sent off!

  2. On my trip to Dublin, had a fantastic trip with eight great Bhoys. Spoke briefly to WiTS but we were unable to meet. Had a few Guinness in the Gravediggers after doing the Glasnevin Cemetery tour. The guided tour was very interesting and informative; there was also a service being held during our visit to remember the Children who died in 1916. The Guide was so knowledgeable, over two hours. One of ML5’s very own, Margaret Skinnider was mentioned by the Guide; Patbhoy took great pride in telling the Guide we were from Coatbridge.

We also found a few cracking Pubs, most notably The Confession Box (where we watched The Champions clinch the League) and The Auld Triangle; the latter two Pubs were just what a bunch of Bhoys from ML5 were looking for on a Bhoys weekend, including community singing. I even got to Mass in St. Mary’s Pro Cathedral, two minutes from our Hotel, The Gresham.

My trip reminded me of the question, why do you drink Guinness anywhere but Ireland.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  3. Absolutely No interest in EPL or whoever won such

My only interest is in Celtic and Celtic fans

    So

Huge congrats to HT and Minx1888 – Nice :-)

KevJ, very best wishes to you for tomorrow, you are part of the CQN Celtic club being thought of and prayed for.

Oh and with regards shirt sponsorship

I always wanted Harp ( lager) to be our shirt sponsor, and they are currently going through a relaunch having re-located into St James gate Dublin too:-)

Watched it again – once was enough! Sounded like Motty was commentating and ended with “50 fouls conceded, 9 booked and 3 sent off…”

    Right, here come Bayern….

All this mince about St Mirren lying down to us thirty years ago today does my box in (copyright Broonie).

Hearts settled for a number of one goal wins and on some occasions , draws, in the 85/86 season. This is what cost them the league not the last game of the season plus our resilience in the last 8 games of that season.

Congratulations to Hamiltontim and Minx , great news.

Jobo , I’m with you re Atletico. My older sister came back in tears from that game plus seeing the picture of Jinky in the papers showing the bruising on his legs after literally getting the crap kicked out of him.

Possible misuse of the word ‘literally’ there? I hope!

  9. Think I would have been screaming for offside there if it was Celtic playing.

Thanks for the advice on the pub in Torreblanca. My mate and I went into Timmys to watch the game on Saturday. Great wee day spent with other like minded Celts. I mentioned your name to Kevin as we were about to go back to the station and he says he knows you well. Afraid we went into the Rovers Return on the way home. Hopefully it’s not too big a compeditor for Timmy’s

I really dont want to see an all Madrid final ….

I think having two local teams playing the CL devalues the competition …. it takes away some of the magic for me. I liked the old days when playing a foreign team was exotic, and special.

    DD,

I seem to recall near the end of the season that they could only beat Clydebank 1-0 when everyone else was horsing them.

  14. Cowiebhoy: There was a time when Harp, Smithwicks and Guinness were the only drinks available on draught here. I always hated Guinness but graduated from Smithwicks to Harp early on. As new lagers became available Harp was referred to as Harpic because of the terrible hangover it left you with.

  18. Itscalled…..: glad you found it and enjoyed it. Kevin and his family are very friendly and welcoming. Like the Rovers Return, he caters for all footy fans but Celtic are always number 1 when they are playing.

Jobo,Corkcelt, my , ahem, annoyance at Atletico affected me when using that word. Lol

The loudest cheer I ever made for a non Celtic goal was when the Bayern centre back scored that last minute equaliser against Atletico in the 1974 European Cup final.

The young bhoy has just done an interview for the author Dan Freedman’s website. He writes books about a fictional player called Jamie Johnson. Thought I would post a link incase anyone fancied having a look at it….he thinks he is a superstar after seeing it himself. They needed an action shot for the story, so there was only ever one option of what football strip he was going to wear.

Prestonpansbhoy, we played the maroon balloons around late November/ early December 1985. We were rotten and they were settling for a one nil win. As Kevj would say , big Mark McGhee, scored an equaliser with about ten minutes to go.

If Hearts had not settled for a one nil win when we were on the back foot,, could have eventually won them the league that season. Thankfuly that horror McDonald made the wrong decision
