Free weekends just not right

602

There’s something not right about a free weekend in early March; we should still have been in the Cup.  Congratulations are therefore due to the five managers who remain in the competition, who have each shown remarkable abilities and are truly invaluable resources to their respective clubs – worth contract extensions all round.

Congratulations are also due to the 40,000 Aberdeen fans who will pack Celtic Park next weekend for the League Cup Final.  Opponents, Inverness, have shifted only 7,000 of their 20,000 allocation, although I hear there is a brisk trade in tickets this morning, many of which will end up in the hands of Aberdeen supporters.

40,000 Aberdeen fans at a game may be unprecedented, despite the 147,365 attendance at their 1937 Scottish Cup Final against Celtic.  No one was to know demand would be so buoyant from Aberdeen, but now the SPFL do know, they need to ensure the spare circa 13,000 tickets are sold to Aberdeen fans in a controlled manner.

Many thanks to everyone who donated to Mary’s Meals since the MyDonate link went up on Friday.  We are more than halfway there to funding the second school kitchen, at St Joseph’s Primary School in Kasungu, Malawi.  Stunned at the response.  You can get involved here.

Seville, The Celtic Movement, launches this month.

“It might not happen anytime soon but sometime down the line I’d like to think we could get there again. Maybe even go that extra mile and win the Cup. Henrik Larsson was our hero in this outstanding run and we’d probably need to look at finding another Henrik to get us there again! Remember that Celtic recently finished ahead of Benfica in Champions League Group stages and they dropped into the Europa Cup, reached the final and were very unlucky not to win it.”

Maradona was tarnished as a drugs cheat. I’m not sure how long he was on drugs to be honest. A very sad way to end a great career. Pele for me.

Only saw him on TV but he was a great player. Very much a team player.

    Di Stefano was pretty useful.

I saw him live in the 1960 European Cup final at Hampden.

Eintracht had just scored to put a better gloss on the score an Real took the centre.

The ball was passed around a couple of player then back to Di Stefano now into the Eintracht half. He took a couple of strides forward and drilled the ball low just inside the post with the German keeper rooted to the spot.

Aye he wiz quite good. :)

Scirea is one of only five players in European football history to have won all international trophies for football clubs recognized by UEFA and FIFA. Scirea is also one of only nine players in the history of the European football that won all three major UEFA football competitions. He played for the Italian national team for more than a decade during which he was irreplaceable as the leading defender, keeping Franco Baresi out of the national team for four years until he retired in 1986. Scirea became a World Champion with the 1982 FIFA World Cup winning team, which defeated Brazil 3–2 in the quarter-final match and Germany 3–1 in the final.

Scirea was a defender of skill and tactical ability. In contrast to the ruthless tactics often employed by other defenders, including his paired partner, Claudio Gentile, Scirea was renowned for his class, fair play and sportsmanship. Scirea never earned a red card in his career.

He played the sweeper, or libero, role for most of his career, and contributed to the development of this position initiated by Franz Beckenbauer in the 1970s. Thus, Scirea would detach himself from the defensive line and contribute to the attacking potential of his team, frequently being involved in the build-up of goals, and sometimes even scoring himself. In the latter part of his career, Scirea played a more defensive central-defender role.

A moot point. They both needed drugs to ‘perform’ in the end ;)

Maradona’s book is also a great read btw, he says the drug thing was endemic in Italy at the time he got done. If he hadn’t knocked Italy out of the Semi’s the authorities would have continued to turn a blind eye. That’s his version of events of course but a good read anyway.

  14. Love this quote:

“People always talk about Ronaldinho, and everything but I didn’t see him today – I saw Henrik Larsson. Two times he came on – he changed the game, that is what killed the game – sometimes you talk about Ronaldinho and Eto’o and people like that, you need to talk about the proper footballer who made the difference and that was Henrik Larsson tonight ”

    Forster away

Matthews not looking very happy at the moment

Lustig if a bid comes in that suits him then he will be away

Ambrose already being linked to bottom half teams of the EPL

VVD PL will not pass up on 12-15m

    Izzy wants to stay.

No wonder Lenny wants away, could be yet another rebuilding of the team ahead.

A moth goes into a podiatrist’s office, and the podiatrist’s office says, “What’s the problem?”

And the moth says “What’s the problem? Where do I begin, man?” He goes, “I go to work for Gregory Illinivich, and uh, all day long I work. Honestly doc, I don’t even know what I’m doing anymore. I don’t even know if Gregory Illinivich knows. He only knows that he has power over me, and that seems to bring him happiness. But I don’t know, I wake up in a malaise, and I walk here and there.”

And the podiatrist says, “Oh yeah?”

And the moth goes, “Yes.” And he goes, “Uh, at night I…I sometimes wake up and I turn to some old lady in my bed that’s on my arm. A lady that I once loved, doc. I don’t know where to turn to. My youngest, Alexendria, she fell in the…in the cold of last year. The cold took her down, as it did many of us. And my other boy, and this is the hardest pill to swallow, doc. My other boy, Gregarro Ivinalititavitch… I no longer love him. As much as it pains me to say, when I look in his eyes, all I see is the same cowardice that I… that I catch when I take a glimpse of my own face in the mirror. If only the cowardice was stronger then perhaps…perhaps I could bring myself to reach over to that cocked and loaded gun that lays on the bedside behind me and end this hellish facade once and for all.”

He says, “Doc, sometimes I feel like a spider, even though I’m a moth, just barely hanging on to my web with an everlasting fire underneath me. I’m not feeling good.

And so the doctor says, “Moth, man, you’re troubled. But you should be seeing a psychiatrist. Why on earth did you come here?”

And then the moth said, “‘Cause the light was on.”

  23. Nevin says it wasn’t a goal but reckons that Albion wouldn’t have got it at the other end, because decisions like that favour the big teams. What tripe. We know that one, and only, one club gets that kind of decision and they’re pretending they’re no deid.
