Free weekends just not right

602

There’s something not right about a free weekend in early March; we should still have been in the Cup.  Congratulations are therefore due to the five managers who remain in the competition, who have each shown remarkable abilities and are truly invaluable resources to their respective clubs – worth contract extensions all round.

Congratulations are also due to the 40,000 Aberdeen fans who will pack Celtic Park next weekend for the League Cup Final.  Opponents, Inverness, have shifted only 7,000 of their 20,000 allocation, although I hear there is a brisk trade in tickets this morning, many of which will end up in the hands of Aberdeen supporters.

40,000 Aberdeen fans at a game may be unprecedented, despite the 147,365 attendance at their 1937 Scottish Cup Final against Celtic.  No one was to know demand would be so buoyant from Aberdeen, but now the SPFL do know, they need to ensure the spare circa 13,000 tickets are sold to Aberdeen fans in a controlled manner.

Many thanks to everyone who donated to Mary’s Meals since the MyDonate link went up on Friday.  We are more than halfway there to funding the second school kitchen, at St Joseph’s Primary School in Kasungu, Malawi.  Stunned at the response.  You can get involved here.

Seville, The Celtic Movement, launches this month.

“It might not happen anytime soon but sometime down the line I’d like to think we could get there again. Maybe even go that extra mile and win the Cup. Henrik Larsson was our hero in this outstanding run and we’d probably need to look at finding another Henrik to get us there again! Remember that Celtic recently finished ahead of Benfica in Champions League Group stages and they dropped into the Europa Cup, reached the final and were very unlucky not to win it.”

And I appear to be wrong again. Old memory shot to pieces. Pele not listed as being subbed or coming on as a sub. 26 June 1966. I could have sworn he only played the second half. Ho, hum.

Saw the greatest ever ,Pele when Scotland played Brazil at Hampden.

and Stevie Chalmers scored in the draw.1-1?

    ————————————————–

Was there too, Stevie scored in the first couple of minutes I think.

Brazil were in lead up to taking part in the 1966 world cup finals in England

  3. Forgot to say Celtic have organised a FREE pint for everyone attending CQTEN (even Neganon) and have donated a great prize to the auction. Club have been first class with us on organising this event- sometimes they get stick and rightly so on occasion. So when they have been great think it should be said too.

“STV, fixture pile up for Sevco….eff me!!!”

Surely time for George Peat to pressure his brothers at the SFA on giving Sevco an extension.

Albion Rovers to play twice in 52 hours as the replay is on a Monday.

  5. good afternoon cqn

    Len Brennan,

The tribute that Henri paid to Larsson after the CL final, was arguably the finest tribute made to an opponent.

For me, what elevated it above all others, was that it was made minutes after his team lost and the pain of deteat must have been acute.

    Re Dermot Gallagher.

Like all refs, he responded to the ” goal” as his masters would have wished.

His masters are now Sky Sports, an organisation who have been in the frontline in promoting the myth of the Perpetual Huns.

  7. evening Celts how we all doing this evening? i hope your all tipping along

Thomthethim belated birthday wishes hope you had a grand day

Favourite italian players I liked Gianfranco Facchetti,Rivera,Riva,Burgnich,Scirea,Baresi,Conte,Maldini,Zoff,Zola and lately Pirlo prob missed out a few too.Altobelli wasnt bad at expressing what scoring meant(82 final)for your country.

Pele was a player but to me Maradona wins it.I was fortunate to see him at Wembley then Hampden in 1979.twice in the scotland game he walked thro our midfield and twice his midfield companions Luque and Ardiles(i think)were not with him…so he duly walked back thro with the ball so his teammates could catch up with him and done it again!truly breathtaking, and had the scotland fans chanting Argentina.

His performance in the 86 world cup was a virtuoso regardless of what the english think. He won it and fulfilled his own prophecy said at 10 year old that he would win ‘mundial’

    theoriginal…….,

Pele’s quote in the Monday morning press, was along the lines of enjoying the game, (even though Bremner kicked him off the park).

He also said that he ” got Steve Chalmers jersey and a Celtic badge”.

  9. Theoriginalsadiesbhoy.

I was at that game too. Stevie scored in the 1st minute. 1965 if I remember correctly but I’m sure Pele only played a half of the game.

You are correct , pele came off , and I remember billy bremner giving him some unwanted attention . .

  10. BBC Scotland making the spurious claim that Albion Rovers will reap the reward of their draw against the deid team. Surely, if they had qualified staight into the semi-final they would have had even greater reward. Trying to put any kind of good face on the cheating. Pathetic….

    an Tearmann,

Thanks. I’m trying to string it out to include the St. Paddy’s Day and culminate with a much anticipated to Celtic Park for the St.Mirren game.

They might try and cancel their league game before the replay v the Mighty Rovers. :))

Sleekit on the official Sevco site insists he’s not embarrassed:

“As I keep saying I think people are maybe getting carried away with where our club is at this moment in time and the team.

“I think it’s highly disrespectful of people to say that [that the result is embarrassing] and I’m certainly not going to say it.”

    ———————————————————————

Surely this wouldn’t be the same person who only one month ago said this:

“We believe, outwith Celtic, who would be most people’s if not everybody’s favourites to win domestic competitions because of their strength at this moment, we believe we are on a par with the rest of the SPL teams.”

  18. I was at the Scotlland Brazil game in 1966 and can assure you Bremner kicked Pele up and down the park. He was taken off injured before half-time.

100,000 people turned up to see Pele, and Bremner spoiled it for everyone.

    Billy Bremner.

The Zaire players complained about Billy Bremner in 1974 . They accused him of racism.

  23. Winning Captains,

Could yourself or BRTH send an email with details of the orders for Green Badges for the Virtual Tickets.

Just so we don’t oversell them.

And for anyone else wanting to garauntee collecting either of the CQN badges…..
