From a green jumper to a season ticket

924

It’s one of those obscure football facts which appears more likely to be an urban myth, but when he jogs out onto Celtic Park on Sunday the proof will be there for all to see: Chelsea captain John Terry is a Celtic fan.  I’ve heard many wide ranging reasons why people become attached to the club, not everyone was born into it as an accident of paternal heritage, some of us made our own way there.

I know one Ulsterman, from the loyalist tradition, who has lived in Scotland for decades, and, along with his friends, is a Celtic supporter.  One season ticket holder told me he started shouting for Celtic as an infant, to tease his Rangers supporting father, but one day the teasing developed into the acquisition of a green jumper, an unusual occurrence in the family home.  A bridge had been crossed, soon posters were on the bedroom wall, a Celtic Subbutteo team was bought and after a few years, a Celtic top made its appearance.

There are hundreds, possibly thousands, of great stories like these.

Sunday’s #19 Legenda’ game will be a chance for some of us to reminisce about the days when Pierre, Lubo, Jorge, Bobo, Tommy Boyd, the man himself, Stiliyan Petrov and, of course, the Swede, graced Celtic Park every week.  It will be a rare chance to see Martin O’Neill on the on the touchline, perhaps without bouncing up and down.  Well done to Carlos Cuellar for pitching up, even if he has to play the inevitable pantomime villain.

Monies raised will go towards Stiliyan’s Foundation and to stock a food bank, which will open in Glasgow this month with the aim of alleviating food poverty. Which takes us back to where we started.

Enjoy your day.

Thanks for info. Don’t have Sky, only BT Vision and in their version of the planner game not yet mentioned. Will record anyway and hopefully watch after the game.

    Cheers again.

  2. Tomorrow will be a joyous day.

    Nobody will be booed.

The Celtic family are not like that.

I’m sure ole Mongo Graham at Cash Convertors will do them a better deal.

He’ll try and sell it on as the European Cup.

  4. Turkeybhoy – be careful, and remember never to say anything that could be remotely construed as negative about ‘The Irish’ on here, or the Thought Police will come down on you like a ton of bricks.

I personally agree with your assessment of DD. I didn’t see anything remotely offensive in it. Unfortunately a lot of people on here are constantly in an offended state – particularly when you are talking about the Irish. (Interestingly, most of the ‘offended’ people are not even Irish, but come from the West of Scotland).

I didn’t think their gig this year was that loud actually. I was a little disappointed.

That said I’m immune to loud noise having worked in clubs for almost 15 years.

  7. I saw MBV a few years ago, using ear plugs. Half way through I took them out… back in 10 seconds later.

  8. If you can’t see that referring to somebody’s nationality as part of an insult is likely to be construed as bigoted, then are we safe to assume that you also think eg “black ****” would be okay too. The recipient does after all have black skin. How about “Catholic ****” assuming you know the victim of the insult is actually a Catholic that must also be ok.

    Shocking.

  9. By the way,I have nothing against Mr Desmond.Never met the man.Probably a very nice chap who is a loving father and grandfather.A very shrewd business man by all accounts. My comments on the man, only stem from the disgraceful statement he made regarding a team and the people who support them.Instead of pulling me up about an innocuous comment regards Mr Desmond,I think your anger and ire should be directed at the aforementioned chap whos comments would have put even the most loyal and hunnish of our MSM to complete shame.

Apologies if my comments brought such horror and revulsion to a few,but then again,I have never been “Politically correct”.I like to tell things the way they are.I blame St Anthonys and St Gerrards.

    – I am going to assume you are Scottish. If you heard somebody referring to someone else (not you) as ‘That Scottish – – – – – – – ‘ would you be offended?

    I wouldn’t.

As a group, I can honestly say I find Celtic fans are ‘offended’ more easily than almost any other group I have ever encountered. Surprising really given the strereotypical tough west of scotland Scots/Irish backgrounds a lot of us are from.

I was thinking that after a couple of songs at MBV and I removed the earplugs – only to discover otherwise.

I think it’s down to where you are in relation to the PA system. Back in the old days I used to be down the front in what became known as the most pit – the sound tends to get blasted behind that area, so the ears have an easier time of it.

These days I’m up the back … complaining about the noise…

Thanks for the reply, it was a brilliant night.

My seats are right being the goal at entrance level so we had a great view of the shot, the penalty and the winner.

Wee Scott Macdonald was never going to score that penalty, his attitude was too casual and he telegraphed where he was going to put it.

But what a game and set us up for Helicopter Thursday.

Classic singles. I’m a big fan of the Fall – once you realise one in every three albums is going to hit the spot you get full worth. They have to be the most productive band in the world.

I spent a night in Mark E. Smith’s company many years ago. The man’s an eejit. But it was a very educational experience.

I can imagine. He had a basement flat in Cumberland Street in Edinburgh at one point. I used to see him in the local chippie buying Benson & Hedges. I was usually struggling to get vinegar on my chips.

Totally. As Stein says – you never know what you’re gonna get. Or who you’re gonna get for that matter – a so many lineup changes over the years!

  20. Turkebhoy and Luxcelt

I agree with Turkeybhoy re DD`s pro-Hun comments; I share Luxcelt`s “easily offended” Celtic supporters comment.

I believe more posters would be won over by your argument/comment if they were constructed in a less exaggerated manner.

For what it`s worth, like J.B Priestly`s Inspector, I cannot be offended.

Neither is describing somebody by their skin colour. It only becomes offensive when it’s included as part of an insult. The same is true for any other of their traits be it sexuality, religion or anything.

It always amazes me that people seem to think that nationality is excluded from that.

  22. Worth a punt?

West Ham could be set to make a move for

    Romania striker Ciprian Marica.

Sam Allardyce is keen to bring in another

forward after the club failed to make any

    signings on transfer deadline day.

Free agent Marica has been without a club

since he left Schalke at the end of last season

and was linked with a move to Arsenal during

    the summer.

The 27-year-old has a wealth of experience

and knows West Ham defender Razvan Rat

from their time together at Shakhtar Donetsk .

    With uncertainty surrounding the comeback

of club-record signing Andy Carroll who has

been forced to miss the start of the season

with a heel injury, Modibo Maiga is the only

other option available to the West Ham

    manager.

  23. lawrenzo- what the footage doesn’t show clearly is the challenge by Novo on Mark Wilson for their equaliser.

He went in full studs aimed a Wilson’s knee, a miracle he didn’t connect and end Wilson’ career. Watch it again and you may get a slight idea if the viciousness. From my seat I saw how bad that attempted challenge was, clearly saw Novo’s intent, firmly imprinted in my mind.

Their triumphal singing as well- at its worst and continued deep into injury time, stopped rather abruptly though! :-)

re free agents – Oguchi (sp?) Onyewu former Milan centre back is available. he is a 31 year old USA international, massive (6’5”) and like a lot of USA players, extremely fit/athletic. he helped Sporting Lisbon to the Europa League final last season. He was loaned out by Milan, and I could never work out why we didn’t go for him. Didn’t get much game time at Milan, but before then he played in Belgium and was outstanding.

Was top of my hit-list of signing targets for a while (about 3 years ago) – an absolute monster, and intelligent bloke too – fluent in 4 languages. We have a lot of youngsters, but he would offer some experience at the back.

  25. Malone Bhoy

    I am not convinced.

It could be that , when insulting someone, we simply pick out an obvious characteristic to give strength to our insult. For instance, if we call a tall person a big **** , we don`t mean there is something wrong with being tall but it has more impact.

    JJ

  26. Howevah……if the characteristic has low standing in society, then we have a different situation.
