From David Marshall to Tony Watt

1317

Just days after The Beating of Barca in 2004 the youthful Celtic chief executive, Peter Lawwell presented teenage sensation, David Marshall, with a new contract, reward for his incredible goalkeeping performances against the Catalans.  Having made only a single first team appearance, in a cup game against (then) lower league opponents, David played the second half of the first leg against Ronaldinho & Co, then all of the second leg, without conceding a goal.

It Camp Nou performance was the most remarkable I’ve seen from a keeper.  After years looking for a solid performer to make the position his own, it looked like we had a new star.

A year later David had, if anything, regressed.  He remained first choice until after the start of season 2005-06 but Artur Boruc, for a while the genuine article, soon replaced him.  David was shipped out to Norwich before eventually settling at Cardiff City, where he has built a solid career, but his star never shone as brightly as we expected it to.  His Scottish contemporaries, Allan McGregor and Craig Gordon, both overtook him.

It is incredibly hard for a youth player to break into a team like Celtic in a position like goalkeeper, or striker, the pressure to deliver – every time – is so high, we are a whole lot more likely to introduce wingers.  The parallels between David Marshall and Tony Watt are remarkable, so far.

From the outside it’s hard to guess what went wrong for David at Celtic.  He lost his place at Celtic when he was just 20 and the trajectory of his career was never the same but 20 is still remarkably young for a keeper working at Champions League level.  Tony Watt is two years younger than David and he is in the considerably better position of being able to come on as substitute for sections of games, or to drop away for a few weeks, if necessary.

We should expect more fantastic splurges of form from the player but there will be frustrations and dips in form too.  He has the skill, speed and strength to make it.  With hard work and patience he stands an excellent chance.

  1. All across Europe as this fake austerity (a.k.a The Shock Doctrine) bites ever deeper, the police, as the front-line defence of the establishment in civil matters, are aligning themselves ever closer with the right and extreme right-wing, as evidenced by the police deferring to The Golden Dawn in Greece.

In the west of Scotland this is manifesting itself in the police stamping down on any civil protest, their relaxed attitude to fascist groups such as the edl/sdl,their extreme ‘handling’ of The GB and the establshment turning a blind eye to their heavy-handed, and possibly illegal, behaviour.

    No pasaran.

The polis are only doing their masters bidding, they are willing partners obviously.

But ffs, it’s no rocket science, if they think they are connected to a terrorist organisation, they would have huckled them before now, but no, they lift them for spurious crimes, it’s harrasment, end of.

  3. GB…noticed in last home game the drummer appeared to be in the middle of the GB …IN PAST games there were normally 2 drummers.. down the front on either side of their banner…past games ive saw the drummer guys being pushed about…sounds like harrassment………………anyways the security guy( the heed wan) who now poses in a burgandy baseball cap hees the one who relishes in getting right in about them….would pass for an ex cop anyday of the week

  4. SORRY.

After reading about all the unfair stuff that the GB has to put up with.

I think that ALL season ticket holders, (in fact EVERYBODY) should boycott the next

    TWO home matches.

Just to show the board that , if the police intimidate ONE FAN THEY INTIMIDATE US ALL.

I know that some people will say that they have bought tickets , and are entitled to do as they please.

If we stick together and show them an empty stadium then hopefully the board of celtic football club will react.

  5. Personally i think the persecution of the green brigade is down to how inferior the

    watp are feeling.

They realise that not only have their fans consistently been Scotlands shame they realise their deid club has

    caused them humiliation aswel.

  7. Greenwells Glory on

    Hi Ghuys, Salve salve;-

with regard to the Green Brigade Boycott, a most regrettable turn of events, i think that this is a direct consequence of bad law making and society is the loser when the Police are overempowered with respect to interpretation of the authority conferred therin.

What is happening in reality amounts to the persecution and criminalisation of nothing more than a group of football fans. I have not always agreed with the actions of the GB particularly in reference to banners and some songs but their behaviour has never merrited this. It is time that a light is shone upon the Scottish National Police Force and questions raised about the resources being poured into the persecution of a culture.

I may be typing out of my erchie here but I believe I read somewhere that there is a right of petition to the Scottish Parliament whereby a petition of (I think) 1000 signatures can be or has to be given time in parliament. Also we need to collect money and evidence and raise this in the Eurpoean Parliament . Remember, the Police are there to serve us not to involve themselves in the formation of government policy or pursue thier own agenda.

If a fighting fund is needed to end this totaltarian behaviour, then I would be a willing contributer.

    Greenwells.

Gordon64, without the GB paradise will not be diminished, it will be almost empty.

I will not attend the next home game if they call for a wider boycott of sb holders. That’s two more empty seats and I don’t think I’m in a minority.

The club will always “go on”, as evidenced by the sevco franchise. At least the idiots at the top of their fiasco are supportive of the ones who are paying to watch whats on display on the pitch.

The Green Brigade are nothing short of magnificent, they should be supported and protected by our club, not demonised.

  9. TET (et all)

How does all this rest on the consciousness of Neil Francis Lennon who in front of our very eyes symbolically dedicated the SPL trophy to a particular corner of the stadium?

Harbouring our misconceived and misrepresented yet simple Tifo group carefully I hope are the men in power at Celtic, if not we will all be damaged, along with the Celtic match day experience.

    Think Carefully CSC

  10. Mucho Respect to the GB.

    After a bit of contemplation

i can see where the GB are coming from.

  11. I think its getting to them and theyre hurting they cant stomach the GB singing songs about their beloved team……………..ever seen a smiling one in and around the stadium,,,,,me neither

  12. ACGR

I supported Celtic long before the GB were born

and will probably support Celtic long after the GB

get fed up and move on.

I enjoy what they bring to CP and hope it continues

    for many years.

  13. We dont understand what the gb are goin through, cant be easy if peelers are turning up at there work place, homes etc , they obviously feel they need to make a stand somehow.

I would prefer thou if they staged a walk out in the 60th minute that way the rest of the stadium can join in.

Seems pretty clear and rightly so most want to help the GB in some way.

What ever action they take thou i hope they get lots of support, crazy what they have to put up with for following there team.

Hopefully stand up for the green brigade can be belted out by everyone.

Maybe also a collection to help with banners, flags , court appearences.

  14. BSR

    I really feel for Lenny.

The GB and the support at large, but the GB in particular were the ones who stood up for him through everything they threw at him, he understood that.

I have no doubts the board stood by him as well, but in a very different way.

I honestly don’t know what is happening, I know the fabric of the scottish society has been ripped away, and the powers are not happy, we as I said earlier are the collateral damage, they hate us with a vengance, they want us gone, and they will not rest untill we are gone.

Now that leaves us with a real problem, how far do we take the fight ?

As other posters have said, if we give up, we are gone.

What do we do, we fight them, that’s what we do, we have no other option, it’s what we do.

I will be long gone, but my young fella will carry on my hopes and beliefs, and my grandweans are already on the same path.

I’m rambling a bit, no, infact I’m feckin beelin, the soul is being ripped out of our club.

I wish I knew what the feck to do about it to sort it.

  15. The day the music died.

Actually a song about Buddy Holly, a.k.a. ‘the music’.

The whole effin’ world is getting grimmer by the day. All I can do is try to keep my corner in the light and as decent as I can manage.

They say you are born into a world you don’t understand, and at the end, you leave a world you no longer understand.

I must be in trouble….I’ve never understood it. Not for a minute. Just negotiated it, and tried not to step on the mines or fall between the cracks.

    The powers that be?

    Up next.

  16. Gordon64 @ 1.36

I agree and you’re scoring good points, on supporting Celtic.

But the power brokers at Celtic need to handle this with extreme care, because for a myriad of reasons an ordinary day at Celtic Park will become more and more ordinary, and we can certainly do without losing the singing section.

Which is really, why they are being victimised perhaps for supporting Celtic too overtly, for some in blue.

  17. A Ceiler Gonof Rust on

Gordon64, I’m in the same boat as you. I’ve supported the team through some sorry patches and more than a few good ones over a long period of time that also includes the birth of the GB.

I just dont get why our board are not singing the praises of this section of the support. Last Wednesday was special and a large part of that was down to the effort of the GB before and during the game. Our board have taken a concious decision to include their effort as just part of the general great support. Last saturday showed us that the GB alone bring support loud vocal support when times are hard on the pitch.

Unfortunately I’m never going to get into section 111. If I could I would be there in a heart beat.

  19. So…..it’s no surprise ikea used E.German prison labour, is it? Its founder, Ingvar Kamprad.

    From Wikipedia:

In 1994, the personal letters of the Swedish fascist activist Per Engdahl were made public after his death, and it was revealed that Kamprad had joined Engdahl’s pro-fascist New Swedish Movement in 1942. Kamprad had raised funds for and recruited members to said group at least as late as September 1945. When Kamprad quit the group is unknown, but he remained a friend of Engdahl until the early 1950s.[18] Kamprad devotes two chapters to his time in Nysvenska Rörelsen in his book, Leading By Design: The IKEA Story and, in a 1994 letter to IKEA employees, called his affiliation with the organization the “greatest mistake of his life.”[12] Kamprad has explained his teenage engagement in New Swedish Movement as being politically influenced by his father and grandmother in Sudet-Germany.[19] In 2011, journalist Elisabeth Åsbrink revealed that the Swedish secret service created a file on Kamprad already in 1943 titled “Nazi” and that Kamprad in an interview in 2010 told her: “Per Engdahl is a great man, and I will maintain that as long as I live”.[20]

Bob, I watched a bit of that video you sent me but I only lasted around 30 seconds. They make me sick. The orange poppy was a disgraceful thing to do, but their mentally challenged support saw this as a move forward.

I wonder if poppy scotland will recieve the money this year or will it be used to prop up the team and pay the wages again.

I wrote that after reading SFTB post on the Matter after l woke up..

    Basically l agreed with Him..

First of All VMhan gave me His Ticket for the Last H*ns game and the St Johnstone game.. The 3-0 game was Probably one of my Best Ever Celtix Expeiriences.. A Olde Guy with a Bad Back trying to Keep up with the GB young team.. I met one of the Founders of GB before the Match and he Introduced me to some of the Lads as a Aussie..;0(

I introduced myself to the Bhoys next to me.. Great Lads.. When one of the Rangers players took out a Crltic player over at the Main Stand Touchline a Guy behind me called the Rangers player a term l had never heard before.. The 2 Bhoys next to me.. Screamed at him telling him to get out of the Section as he was Totally against everything the GB stand for this went on for a few minutes.. I remember thinking that would NEVER have happened in My Day.. I spoke to the two lads after the Game..

That of Course is just one Incedent that l happened to witness..

What I don’t want the GB to do is Split the Support.. A Boycott is a Big thing to ask other Celtic Supporters to do..

And what will the Media make of it.. What if there are 30k empty seats how do we know if people are Supporting it or Out Shopping for Xmas..?

Lastly l don’t think the Police ‘Action’ is as Bad as some of the Bhoys think it is..The Guys l met before the Rangers game were all Happily chatting with the Police before the Game which l thought was good..again this is just a Moment in time..

Lastly.. At the End of the Thai Tim’s.. The GB did “Passing the Section when Rangers Die” Yes this was Hilarious.. But.. It’s like sticking the Finger to Celtic Re Health and Safety..

If You are being Watched You need to Box Clever..

What if the Jock Stein stand held up a Banner: Boycott Not in My Name..?

That was meant as a Wee bit of a Joke..

If We are Going to Boycott do it as a United Support.. And I’ll be First in Line..

If you ever have the opportunity wander through County Roscommon, I’d recommend a visit to the estate of Strokestown – the great house use to be accessible, I’ve no idea if that is still the case.

If so, take care to visit and witness one epitomy of Ireland’s – and humanity’s – ills. So strenuous were the owners in their endeavours to seperate themselves from the indigenous poor, that they built tunnels where the servants would scuttle to and fro feeding the power of the house, without contaminating the inhabitants. A small channel was constructed from the house to the kitchen, through which the weekly menu was dropped, such was the fear.

I’ve often wondered whether this edifice grew purely from snoberry and racism, or whether there was an measure of guilt. Would the face of a peasant pose serious questions of their professed Christian beliefs, when they looked in the mirror in the morning? Or was their belief so perverted, that they considered there to be different grades of humanity?

Equally, for every landlord, there was a dozen gombeen men willing to gut their fellow man for a few pennies more – purely business you understand.

And we’re still at it, categorising other humans into groups we can call “the other” – because it’s simple that way, and it bands “us” together; Isreali and Palestinian, Socialist and Capitalist. I’ve met enough of the “groups” to know that there’s good and bad in each and every one of them.

And, importantly, it suits those in power, and those who seek power, to simplify things thus. Its up to us average culchies to see through this crap, and treat a man as you find him – no labels.

Obviously beginnin to talk pish now

Neil Lennons gesture last season when he took the league cup to the GB section corner was a very telling moment. He knew that this section of the support had been with him thoughout the season and he rightly dedicated the triumph that day to them.

Why do our suits not agree with our manager?

That too was a fantastic moment in my visits to paradise.
