From David Marshall to Tony Watt

1317

Just days after The Beating of Barca in 2004 the youthful Celtic chief executive, Peter Lawwell presented teenage sensation, David Marshall, with a new contract, reward for his incredible goalkeeping performances against the Catalans.  Having made only a single first team appearance, in a cup game against (then) lower league opponents, David played the second half of the first leg against Ronaldinho & Co, then all of the second leg, without conceding a goal.

It Camp Nou performance was the most remarkable I’ve seen from a keeper.  After years looking for a solid performer to make the position his own, it looked like we had a new star.

A year later David had, if anything, regressed.  He remained first choice until after the start of season 2005-06 but Artur Boruc, for a while the genuine article, soon replaced him.  David was shipped out to Norwich before eventually settling at Cardiff City, where he has built a solid career, but his star never shone as brightly as we expected it to.  His Scottish contemporaries, Allan McGregor and Craig Gordon, both overtook him.

It is incredibly hard for a youth player to break into a team like Celtic in a position like goalkeeper, or striker, the pressure to deliver – every time – is so high, we are a whole lot more likely to introduce wingers.  The parallels between David Marshall and Tony Watt are remarkable, so far.

From the outside it’s hard to guess what went wrong for David at Celtic.  He lost his place at Celtic when he was just 20 and the trajectory of his career was never the same but 20 is still remarkably young for a keeper working at Champions League level.  Tony Watt is two years younger than David and he is in the considerably better position of being able to come on as substitute for sections of games, or to drop away for a few weeks, if necessary.

We should expect more fantastic splurges of form from the player but there will be frustrations and dips in form too.  He has the skill, speed and strength to make it.  With hard work and patience he stands an excellent chance.

Sometimes in Celtic l think ‘What would Jock do..?’

Probably Celtic Supporters-Managers-Players..have done the Same..

It think we know what he would think of the Poppy banner..

And l think he would be not to Happy about Anyone Boycotting HIS Team when a Important Game is to Be Played..

You see with Jock.. ALL Celtic Games were important..

    But..

Then again.. I think (And its only my Opinion).. He would have been Standing on a ‘Lime’ box in the Carpark that night to get the old board as far away from His Celtic as he Could..

Having read back about a proposed G.B.boycott of two Celtic matches,I have to say that I can`t see what could be achieved.

    Who will be disadvantaged?

Our G.B.supporters who would prefer to be attending the matches.

Our supporters who would prefer the G.B`s attendance and songs and displays.

    Our club,through loss of revenue.

    Reduced support for our team.

    Who would be happy?

    The M.S.M.

    The hun,most of all.

It would provide a ray of sunshine for them in what has been,to say the least, a bleak year and may even boost sales of tickets for the Green lottery.A return of their feelgood factor.

What will be achieved? Frankly,i can`t see the Board responding to a boycott in any way

I would imagine that they would feel that a boycott is not the way to achieve the outcome which the G.B. desire.Quite the reverse.

I very much hope that the G.B. decide to employ a different tactic.

How about informal negotiation behind closed doors?

    Hail Hail

  8. If Celtic FC were harassing members of the GB I could understand talk of boycotts etc…

However, it is the police who should be the target of any campaigns etc…, not Celtic.

The GB have done some great things for Celtic and some highly questionable things. I believe these latest events to fall into the latter category.

It is a great shame that having played their part in one of the greatest nights at Celtic park, the GB now seem to be about to undo all their good work.

Please don’t shoot yourselves in the foot. Please find another way to address your concerns.

Three weeks ago people in here criticised supporters rights to boo the team when we lost to killie

How many of the GB booed that day …. I guess none.

I support celtic … Attend all home games and a few away matches

I also aupport the gb … Not sure a boycott is a first step though.

    Suggestions on a poatcard pleaae

  11. It is the prerogative of the Green Brigade to boycott if they so choose, the opinions of others who have not been subjected to the intimidations should be heavy with caveats.

    Compare and contrast…

The Green Brigade, their politics, their songs, their cost to the public purse – Police response?

The Orange Order, their politics, their songs, their walks, their cost to the public purse – Police response?

  12. The Green Brigade should explore a ‘class action’ against the Strathclyde Police and the minister responsible for their actions. They should present the tolerance of the Orange Walks as a benchmark and precedence. They’d win. Well that is my opinion for what it is worth.

If there is a Celtic Family Trust Fund to aid any of the Green Brigade who are forced to defend themself against scrofulous charges, then it would be my pleasure if I was allowed to contribute to that Fund.

Fekin terrible time to be getting out

But the bhoys need our support ,

just reading back about the GB,

    I personally think they would

get a better reaction if they got

up and left at a specific time ,

i think if they did that ,

    more supporters would join

    in,

as for plod and the OO,

    don’t even go there,

  16. The tolerances of depravity indulged by Scottish politicians, the Scottish media, Scottish law makers, the establishment in general, have a darker side than the obvious, their crassness is inviting a moral and ethical necrotizing upon Scottish society. It will come back to bite them.

As I said, if the Green Brigade’s response to scrofulous, and obscene in pettiness, charges is to retaliate with a boycott, then for me, they are to be applauded and lauded their emulation of the tactics that crowned in glory the likes of Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi.

Never forget, the Green Brigade have already paid for their seats, their silent protest is costing them.

I don’t know why, but since reading about this issue, I can’t get the events of the Janefield Street Police Horse Charge out of my head. And I was there – from the start – and at the end of that night, after the Police had behaved like cowards, they knew they came close to serious civil unrest and it was all down to their ridiculous over-reaction to the playful actions of a couple of kids on the graveyard wall.

Are the Police trying to provoke something??? Are they?

  17. Top of the morning to you all from a still dark Fife.

You are not alone Kitalba in casting your mind back to the Janefield Street cavalry charge.

I was there too but left early and missed the carnage.

The police then were acting out their master’s will and their present day successors are doing the same.

Police playing politics at their master’s bidding.

Excellent post. It is entirely a one sided persecution.

The GB’s statement reads like a plea to me. A plea to their fellow Tims for support at a difficult time. The boycott is entirely aimed at raising the issue to a wider audience whilst pointing out to the club that without the support of the GB the atmosphere at CP would be greatly diminished. They won’t want to cause loss to the club. They’re hoping that this action brings us together and shines a torch on the wholely undemocratic actions of the police and their political organ grinders.

    More power to them.

  21. Morning all!

The planned boycotts by the GB have my support! The harrasment they have had to endure from Strathclyd’e finest – and even some club stewards – is nothing short of scandalous.

    ….and from the board? Silence!

The GB have, obviously, not taken this decision lightly and have discussed it at great length. They will be back – the thought of some home matches without their presence does not bear thinking about!

    Forza la brigata verde!

As for today no doubt Grampian’s finest will be out in force – ‘ably’ assisted by their Strathclyde colleagues with cameras at the (aye) ready!

Expecting a good performance from the bhoys – our away form has been much better anyway: 15 goals scored as opposed to only 7 at home.

I will go for 3-1 to us.

    HH!!

  22. There’s nothing that I’ve seen contained within the GB statement, or read anywhere since, that suggests that they are taking this stance in the hope that the rest of the support follow their actions.

The GB aren’t stupid, if they’d wished for full backing they’d have garnered opinion and consensus prior to stating their intentions.

The Green Brigade are an asset to our club and should be applauded for their contribution.

It has been decided by Salmond , the Police,Media & the Scottish parliament that the Green Brigade are a sinister and dangerous organisation which threaten the fabric of Scottish society and to be treated as potential criminals and arrested accordingly using the any excuse will do law

Meanwhile back in the real world football supporters across Europe and the globe marvelled at the Green Brigades absolutely stunning tiffo display against Barcelona and there continual backing and support of Celtic which creates one of the best atmosphere’s witnessed in any football stadium Anywere! having fun in the Champions league anyone

Celtic fans especially the Board of Directors must support the Green Brigade and there stance against this victimisation & criminalisation which is totally unjustifiable and reprehensible
