Front-loading transfers with loans

823

Mistakes in the transfer market are more costly to a club than any mistake made on a football field.  It’s too easy to spend millions on a transfer fee and commit to the kind of contract you or I will never see in our lives.  After contracts are signed you need to hope the player settles into the squad, and the city, sometimes hope he learns the language, and assume he can cope with the weather.

So how do you offset this?  In recent seasons Celtic have tried, when possible, to agree a deal in principle, but front-load the transfer with a short-term loan deal.  This gives the club six months or a year to ensure all the boxes are ticked before they commit the kind of resources which would have an impact on multiple seasons.

Miku is a case in point.  Glasgow is a long way from his native Venezuela, and as different from Madrid or Valencia, where he spent most of his adult life, as you will find in Western Europe.  He is a almost certainly a better player than we have seen since he arrived at the end of the summer transfer window, but it would be foolish to suggest he has settled well at the club.

If Miku doesn’t cut it, he will return to Spain in the summer, or sooner, and Celtic will have conserved millions.

We are one of only three Scottish clubs that Kenny Miller has ever played for …the other two being Hibs and Stenhousemuir.

Given he is currently back training in Scotland , and I strongly suspect looking for a club, wouldn’t it be amusing if we offerrec him the chance to dump the Glasgow rain and join us in Marbella :-)

  2. Richie,

Kenny Miller can teach Sevco’s ‘kids’ how to look confused just before controlling the ball with his face.

Kris Boyd can show them how to celebrate aggressively, and give them an insight to his match preparation by eating five bags of Monster Munch.

Marbella would be the perfect place to get Kenny Miller back to his old Tango man self !

  5. Apparently all the new shareholders in SevcoFC 2012 got their certificates this morning.

They are delighted to see the words, ‘Rangers Football Club Established 1872′ and because it’s a pure dead legal thing and aw that, this puts the nail in the coffin of all the Rangirs hatin’ Tims out there who claim it’s a new club.

Great result for the Seagulls against that wee team from the North East.

The Geordie fangitas have always been my least favourite English team by a long way, and that was before Pardew came.

Another season winning feck all. Har de har.

  7. The try before you buy also ensures that if a player wants a contract that he will be out to prove something and be trying as hard as he can every game.

Something we have been a bit short of in some departments recently.

Somebody should tell the huns that there is a phenomenon reported throughout history of the doppelganger, a wraith which appears on the death of someone looking like them in all respects, except of course that it is dead, and is merely an image of the deceased.

Gentlemen, I give you The Doppelrangers. Copywright Green Lantern 05/01/2013.

Celtic fans must remember Celtic FC v UEFA at CAS in 2000, where it was held that sporting bodies must construe their rules purposively

Read the obituary and didn’t find too much wrong with. In fact just what one would expect in the aftermath of a parcel rogues falling out.

Although probably not for the same reasons, Mr McElroy did agree with an opinion that I have stated here quite a few times in the past. That is, that the jig was truly up for Minty and THEM whenever the previously amenable Bank of Scotland was swallowed up by the Halifax and Lloyds in turn.

Not being daft, Mr McElroy carefully avoids any reference to the circumstances that led to Hugh Adams succeeding David Hope at Rangers’ pools.

Like that of Mr Adams quoted by Mr McElroy, my own memory isn’t quite what it once was.

However, if I recall correctly, Mr Hope was required to fall on his sword, or if you prefer it, given the bum’s rush, when his Ibrox Board Room colleagues discovered that in his foolish youth he had actually, believe it or not, married a Catholic.
