Frustration and promise in Seville

A game most of us expected to lose without fuss instead turned out to be a frustrating look into what could have been.  Again, we lost four goals in Europe, as we did on three occasions in our Europa League group last season.  Again, we allowed a two-goal lead to slip away.  Despite the superficial similarities to last season, there are reasons to believe we are on a different trajectory.

Celtic bossed Real Betis for the first 30 minutes; the home side could barely hold possession in the final third.  At 0-2, the game could have slipped away from them, but a couple of breaks of the ball 18 yards from the Celtic goal was enough to bring them back into contention and transform the night.  Celtic were too fragile to assert telling authority.

Tom Rogic was head and shoulders above everyone else on the field.  On nights like that, you wonder what he is doing in Scottish football.

After an uninspiring start against Ross County on Saturday, Jota showed us what all the fuss is about.  Forced to play on the right, his deliveries were a delight.  His chance to put Celtic three up may, or may not, have changed the outcome of the game; if you can lose four so readily, there are no guarantees.  The winger pulled up with cramp on Saturday and was visibly waning after 75 minutes last night, when his touch and composure deserted him, but we have a player straight from the ‘Bums on seats’ drawer.

Albian Ajeti’s movement inside the box set the game alight.  He got onto the end of Jota’s cross to score the opener, then tempted Claudio Bravo in the Betis goal into a challenge before nipping the ball away from the keeper.  Would Eduard have made either run?  Not recently, that’s for sure.  The penalty was of the stonewall variety.

After the game, when asked why we keep losing so many goals in Europe, I protested.  The central defenders only met last week, the left back has never played there before this month, and the right and left side pairings were completely new partnerships, “This is different”, I insisted.  Time will tell.

I have watched a lot of Celtic teams lose in Spain but do not recall going there with such an attacking strategy.  I suspect it would never occur to Ange Postecoglou to play any differently.

The game had the look of one of those all-star games we used to see in the 80s, “England v The Rest of the World”, type affairs.  Plenty of talent and lots of goals, as no one really knew each other or what the structure was.  Both Celtic and Betis will improve.  Going on my expectations before the game, there were reasons to be encouraged, despite all the goals against!

BT will be interested to hear that Uefa permit member clubs to veto broadcaster staff assigned to cover games.  I doubt it.  BT subscribers were denied the channels’s top team when Newco refused to allow Neil Lennon and Chris Sutton entrance to Ibrox on security grounds.  Where else outside of the Gangster Clubs will you see behaviour like this?  It is like a club being run by children.

  1. Corkcelt,

After the AZ and subsequent games, I am pretty sure Adam will be our regular left back by the end of the year.

I also reckon Josip could do that defensive mid role very well – allowing Anthony to continue playing right back to good and determined effect. Who knows what Ange thinks. ;)

He’s working his magic on them all.

“Must say as a lay person in this regard I’m just going on a very basic understanding”

    You and me both.

Interesting stuff, good to get a real life explanation

I don’t know about the Brugge Jack Hendry , but I wouldn’t have wanted the Celtic Jack Hendry or the Scotland Jack Hendry for that matter .

I can only speak as I find , regardless of transfer fees involved .

  4. The next door neighbours an Orangie but has never been anything other than mannerly and even friendly in passing go conversation. He’s signed for my parcels and vice versa, that kinda neighbourly thing. So yesterday was such a day when I took collection of a flute piece from Parcel Force.

Was given the heads up by him as he was heading off to Stranraer ferry port to pick up his Ulster Scots girlfriend and wouldnt be back til about 3pm. Well 6pm came and went and still hadn’t turned up to collect. . I was heading out so thought I’d better put the parcel somewhere safe for him to collect. A wee note through the door to explain things. Couldnt help but noticing on his washing line was marchin regalia getting an air in preparation for todays excursions.

Had a wee chuckle to myself as the rain had just started and nightfall was fast approaching. I realised something in his plans must have gone awry along the way.

The dilemma was what to do if nothing at all.

I elected to take his washing down, folded neatly into a basket along with his flute piece and set inside his doorway out of harm and rains way.

Not being home at the time, I got a note of thanks through the door.

Before passing comment/judgement one way or the other just think about what it must be like to be my next door neighbour given the tunes I play to all hours. It could be the first time on CQN posters have more sympathy for an Orangeman than a Fenian.

I think what I did was the Christian thing to do although having shared it with you all, I’m forgoing a plenary indulgence.

Does playing two games against AZ give us all extra immunity?

  6. The phone wifi @ Celtic Park is shockeroonie. Not kidding it takes getting @ least 1 mile away frae the Holy Ground when I eventually get access again to all network services.

This is an unfortunate consequence of having such a Committed support.

Hopefully I cannae get signals for many years to come.

  7. You have to remember what was happening in the UK in the early 90s. The Government were going hard on those just wanting to have a Good Time.

If you were @ Event 1 in Ingliston, like me, you will realise why The Prodigy held grudges. These Emergency Laws must be faced down when Covid cases drop.

  8. Corkcelt,

That’s a lot of change of the back line.

I’m good with sticking with Starfelt, he’s only just arrived and I think dropping him might not help his confidence.

Scales at left back would be good to see sooner rather than later and Juranovic is due a run at right back.

I don’t know about the Brugge Jack Hendry , but I wouldn’t have wanted the Celtic Jack Hendry or the Scotland Jack Hendry for that matter .

I can only speak as I find , regardless of transfer fees involved .

You have to wonder about the strategy behind abondoning a protege on our books so carelessly.

No matter who you have at cb.there will be a problem we don’t have a system to protect them and most of the midfield is powder puff.I hope Ange can change this we are playing some great football but we have to defend.

  11. Sionnaigh,

Jack couldnae handle the pressure, IMO. Jack is now in a less pressurised environment and is a Rock Star. Good Luck to the Bhoy and I hope he always speaks well of his Time @ Celtic and has an excellent career.

    Majestic Hartson,

With you on Starfelt, the guys just in the door. I have a feeling it will be Starfelt & Welsh the morra as our back 2.

CCV is a Unit so who knows? Ange knows he disnae huv the squad yet but he is doing Great. Probably Cameron alongside Stephen then. :D

  12. Petec, just because he failed first time round? Whilst on contract there was enough promise about him to keep an option open for a return.

  13. timhorton,

Why I suggested Josip @ defensive mid. I think he is a very Special player.

An attitude you want from Everyone. He might not be a Wanyama physically – he is Mentally.

He is very agile, Ismaila is too but his lack of games is meaning he isnae gonnae make it @ Celtic – IMO, I sincerely hope I’m wrong.

Ismaila was coached badly and cannae get that Excellent stuff back. Who Curtley Ambrose?

Petec, just because he failed first time round? Whilst on contract there was enough promise about him to keep an option open for a return.

The New team had the option to buy him. So as far as I know, Jack made his decision.

This is not a big deal.

  15. Petec, the New team did not have the option to buy him. Had they not wanted Hendry they’d have sold him for a much more pretty penny to Club Brugge and cut out the middle man.

  16. Never forget its just a Blog and dudes & dudettes giving their own opinions.

And, thats what makes it a blog. Anyone saying Nasty things to others. You need to Grow up, hopefully that will happen.

  17. Sionnaigh,

3rd jab – do they then become us 1/2s. 4th? Seems like Governmental Control.

I know Tontine Tim is putting forward an excellent argument………… It is Ridiculous that people would be ADVISED to DEPOPULATE. The Bible is the MOST important Guidance ever. The Scum Marching Yesterday are just haters.

Fake and gets my Blood boiling.

This is Globalism doing a Touch Down.

  18. I will not be forced into Anything.

Perhaps in 2 years I’ll change ma feeble mind as Celtic get to a European Final. I doubt it though. I very much doubt it.

Aidan Hopefully is there with his Best Pal/s.

I will never get these vaccines.

So I’m gonnae get Blocked frae watching the Celts.

The Virus is just as transmissable by Vaccinated or unvaccinated Ladies or Gentlemen – What the F?

I’m Happy enough to get a test to Enter Celtic Park (as long as I’m not getting Roasted for it).

I, I Am, this is nonsense. We have hud Almost 60000 in for a while now…….. Looks like cases are going down.

All those who Believe in getting jabbed, my Son I feel was coerced, he is on my right, the dude to my left, and is a lot older than Aidan, won’t get a coercive jab, his John Craven days are over like mine.

Gonnae miss watching the Celts until this nonsense is fixed.
