Fulfilling potential after a move

795

One of the things you hope for when a player leaves for a richer league is that they perform well.  It reflects on whatever value you will get the next time someone leaves.  Joe Ledley has gotten off to a flier with Crystal Palace, although there is still a long way to go there, but our two big summer sales are finding it tough.

Gary Hooper hadn’t scored in his last nine starts for Norwich.  His season tally stands at five league goals and two assists, which is still four goals more than Ricky van Wolfswinkel, who cost more than twice Hooper’s price but has scored only once in the league.  Norwich other two strikers have yet to get off the blocks.

Bizarrely, Norwich are flooded with expensive strikers but their fans will bemoan the fact that they don’t have a goal-scorer, which Hooper was at Celtic and van Wolfswinkel was at Utrecht, where he scored a hat-trick against Celtic, and at Sporting.  There is a good chance they will be relegated as a consequence, which will probably have them back on the hunt for a Leigh Griffiths-type striker.

Gary had his dips in form at Celtic, which included a meagre last four months of his final season, Cup Final apart, but Victor Wanyama is one of the best central midfielders we have seen at Celtic in a considerable time.  He was a solid performer for Southampton before injury side-lined him for two months.  Now back, he has a seat alongside Jos Hooiveld on the bench, due to the form of Jack Cork, one of Southampton’s many current stars.

Hooper and Wanyama were among the stars of the Celtic team last season but I suspect their new clubs’ fans are wondering what all the fuss is about.  Form is fickle.  It’s hard to tell when a career is about to turn all Liam Miller on a bright young prospect (and let’s be honest, Miller was every bit as lauded here as Hooper or Wanyama), or what consequences the new club, the move, or other distractions are having on performance.

There are also a couple of ex-Celtic goalkeepers doing a star turn in the FA Premier League, David Marshall at Cardiff and Artur Boruc at Southampon.  After dazzling in his early months Marshall sipped well down the pecking order at Celtic, who eventually offloaded him.  He was replaced as first choice by Boruc, who could claim to be the top rated keeper in Europe 8 years ago but completely lost ‘it’, before finding it again, recently.

My prediction is that Hooper, Wanyama, Balde, Boerrigter and Pukki will not fulfil their potential at their current clubs, although I considered Wanyama’s place on the list for a while.  This does not make them bad players, ‘it’ just doesn’t always happen when it should. By contrast, some players look born to play for Celtic, including Kris Commons, who does not fit the profile of top-flight English clubs but is a rare gem in the Champions League for Celtic.

Really enjoyed reading the questions to and comments about Tommy Gemmell yesterday, as did Tommy, who spent the afternoon reading CQN and was “delighted” at the response.  He’s not got a login yet but we’ll get him sorted and do a live event on the blog after we have the book out of the way.

I’m attending a meeting next Wednesday with Supporters’ Liaison Officer, John Paul Taylor.  Let me know if there are any questions you’d like raised.

If you would like to read the new CQN Magazine, GO HERE to read properly, and for FREE, the graphic below is just a taster.

If the likes of Pukki, Balde and Boerrigter had been scouted and signed at Lenny’s behest they might get more game time.

If I was a manager who had been usurped by the board, I might make my displeasure clear by not playing players who were not my choice and whom I didn’t believe were what I wanted and needed. Hypothetically, of course.

I think there is a connection but before my granddad. I’m Gallowgate born and bred and see myself as Scottish.

However when I attended an Open Meeting four years ago and listened to lads from the Irish Affiliation (or similar title) I was struck by how much their experience coloured their views (and how else could it be?).

So much so that I could understand why that, had their experience been mine, I would have felt like them.

I think its called empathy, but empathy is a two way street.

  6. Cheers eddie – so it looks like clubs generally avoid getting into tit-for-tat exchanges about each other’s fans which makes sense to me.

Meaningless game is what I’m told.

Still hacked off from last Saturday I’ve also been told.

    Worrying times at the moment.

How do we get these ghuys back and to renew next year ?

  9. I unreservedly support Lenny…

Those that don’t can go support Rangers as far as I’m concerned.

Ok we’ve had set backs but to the doubters I say take a step back and assuming you are of an age to put things in to perspective, be glad you support the UNDISPUTED kings of Scottish football.

I’m from being a happy clapper and I see some serious challenges for the club ( engaging fans being chief ) but I think we should get a grip and play our part in supporting Celtic meet these challenges.

I’m actually scunnered by the amount of anti Lenny keech I’m hearing. The guy is a young manager doing one of the hardest jobs in football. He stepped in when we were desperate. He’s stepped up. He will get better.

Some of the fans need to get better IMO.

  10. Burghbhoy

I think using the youth and letting them step up will improve things, i believe they can compete and grow and stop our heavy reliance on bringing in imports, we need imports to sell on as part of our plan to make money as a club. however I don’t think we need to buy at the level we currently are, duff players are wasting the clubs time and stunting a youths growth.

I also think a further reduction in season ticket prices will help.

I’m debating renewing my season ticket, that’s merely down to travel expenses to the game from Essex to Glasgow, not anything to do with whats happening on or off the field, but a lot of people currently are skint and that will continue with rises elsewhere and stagnant wages, so price increases will definetly be a bad move from the club.

What decent Aberdeen fans would that be?

Without labouring the point, it was thousands in unison singing paedo chants, and other c word abuse of Neil Lennon. Nothing like it since before liquidation day, quite sinister was the content, and number of offenders.

Not sure if Paul will add more to his trailer in this blog using a a separate specific blog but here is some background. It is an opportunity to start building bridges so what would you like to see that produces a more cohesive approach?

The invite is to individuals and groups but the SLO is happy to take input via blogs which is why Paul asked for such.

    .

(I got an invite because I’ve been patiently pushing for something to be done on communication for years now via a membership scheme and have met JPT to suggest systems that might do just that)

From John Paul Taylor Celtic SLO

    Good Evening Everyone

Having now completed my first six months in the role of SLO at Celtic, I am keen to continue and develop the dialogue we have with supporters and build on the lines of communication which are currently in place with the elected representatives of the various Supporter organisations.

On this basis I am looking to put in place a Supporters Forum which will meet quarterly with the Club’s Executive to discuss current issues affecting Celtic and would like to extend an invitation for you to attend.

As you know the Celtic Support is made up of a very broad church and I have endeavoured to gather a cross section of supporters who I believe will represent the needs of the wider Celtic Support.

The initial meeting will be structured whereby we will take questions in advance in order that we can get a flavour for what the key topics will be. This will effectively provide an opportunity for discussion and allow us to make best use of the time available.

After each meeting there will be a set of minutes which will be published through the Club’s media channels to inform supporters of the responses to the issues raised.

It is planned that the first meeting of the group will take place at Celtic Park in the No.7 restaurant at 7pm on February 19, I would ask that questions are directed to myself and are received no later than Sunday, February 16.

I look forward to hearing from you with any points you would like to raise and confirmation of attendance.

    Best regards

    John Paul

However there are ways and means of addressing this but the first step is to ask the three guys what their actual goal is , to get to CP or have an argument?.
