Fulfilling potential after a move

795

One of the things you hope for when a player leaves for a richer league is that they perform well.  It reflects on whatever value you will get the next time someone leaves.  Joe Ledley has gotten off to a flier with Crystal Palace, although there is still a long way to go there, but our two big summer sales are finding it tough.

Gary Hooper hadn’t scored in his last nine starts for Norwich.  His season tally stands at five league goals and two assists, which is still four goals more than Ricky van Wolfswinkel, who cost more than twice Hooper’s price but has scored only once in the league.  Norwich other two strikers have yet to get off the blocks.

Bizarrely, Norwich are flooded with expensive strikers but their fans will bemoan the fact that they don’t have a goal-scorer, which Hooper was at Celtic and van Wolfswinkel was at Utrecht, where he scored a hat-trick against Celtic, and at Sporting.  There is a good chance they will be relegated as a consequence, which will probably have them back on the hunt for a Leigh Griffiths-type striker.

Gary had his dips in form at Celtic, which included a meagre last four months of his final season, Cup Final apart, but Victor Wanyama is one of the best central midfielders we have seen at Celtic in a considerable time.  He was a solid performer for Southampton before injury side-lined him for two months.  Now back, he has a seat alongside Jos Hooiveld on the bench, due to the form of Jack Cork, one of Southampton’s many current stars.

Hooper and Wanyama were among the stars of the Celtic team last season but I suspect their new clubs’ fans are wondering what all the fuss is about.  Form is fickle.  It’s hard to tell when a career is about to turn all Liam Miller on a bright young prospect (and let’s be honest, Miller was every bit as lauded here as Hooper or Wanyama), or what consequences the new club, the move, or other distractions are having on performance.

There are also a couple of ex-Celtic goalkeepers doing a star turn in the FA Premier League, David Marshall at Cardiff and Artur Boruc at Southampon.  After dazzling in his early months Marshall sipped well down the pecking order at Celtic, who eventually offloaded him.  He was replaced as first choice by Boruc, who could claim to be the top rated keeper in Europe 8 years ago but completely lost ‘it’, before finding it again, recently.

My prediction is that Hooper, Wanyama, Balde, Boerrigter and Pukki will not fulfil their potential at their current clubs, although I considered Wanyama’s place on the list for a while.  This does not make them bad players, ‘it’ just doesn’t always happen when it should. By contrast, some players look born to play for Celtic, including Kris Commons, who does not fit the profile of top-flight English clubs but is a rare gem in the Champions League for Celtic.

Really enjoyed reading the questions to and comments about Tommy Gemmell yesterday, as did Tommy, who spent the afternoon reading CQN and was “delighted” at the response.  He’s not got a login yet but we’ll get him sorted and do a live event on the blog after we have the book out of the way.

I’m attending a meeting next Wednesday with Supporters’ Liaison Officer, John Paul Taylor.  Let me know if there are any questions you’d like raised.

Robert 88 ah you are another Celtic supporter hater. Your argument suggests we re simply cowards

Far from it, I’m open to all opinions, however there’s a lot of shite being spouted, like sack Neil Lennon, the board, all this conspiracy stuff regarding our board and the SFA.

People need to get real, on a personal note I run a couple of business and there are many people who are green eyed and would love to see me fail, anyway my partner made a very good point that you can only be successful yourself and forget about everybody else and what they think or what they are doing. She is correct. Apply that to Celtic and it works the same.

Celtic are doing this as we speak and I really don’t think all the so called fans not attending or abandoning the club helps. Its pathetic, these so called fans seem to think Celtic making statements and gobbing off is the best thing and the way forward.

I would only add to the not insignificant number who are puzzled and concerned with the club’s passive approach to the seemingly blatant , smears, rule breaking and goalpost shifting from the football establishment and the govan club(s).

Serious questions need asked on the validity of LNS. No sporting advantage etc has been latched onto and is utterly pathetic (1) why do anything as a business if it’s not to your advantage?

What I find more concerning is that we have allowed a false narrative to develop. The most arrogant and spiteful supporters in world football now have convinced the outside world looking in that they were ‘relegated’ , badly treated and Scottish football (led by the pied piper lawwell) have cut off our noses to spite our face. The coverage of our game and agenda displayed on English based sky sports news is only one example of this. I have not heard a single comment from any club which succinctly outlines that a sevco/newco being parachuted back in to the spl having ditched all debts, stiffed creditors and then being able to access to all the same revenue streams and funds they had previously is FUNDAMENTALLY unfair!!!! The govan hordes and smsm have given us the myth that the opposite is true and it needs challenged any time it trips off their tongues or laptops.

Our chief exec is portrayed by the zombie hordes as the sfa puppet master. Whilst laughable it needs publicly addressed. Simply stating the facts of the queue jumping newco process, previous licence issues outlines the extent the ‘wash hand basins’ in blazers at hampden will go to aid their cause.

A response from the club on their opinion of and any investigation into the Charlotte fakes revelations is also required IMO . These raised dangerous issues around prominent PR gurus ‘planting’ negative stories about Celtic to deflect away from deadco issues. If true, that is not on and above all else affects Celtic’s brand and reputation.

The overall feeling I have is that the likes of Dermott Desmond, Ian Livingston etc would not allow their own businesses to be messed with in this way.

The horrible BJK / Celtic boys club campaign was and is a slur that is as despicable as it gets. This has only got worse with sevco fans using it as the go to response when in trouble in an argument. Silence has not worked we must be more proactive with this gutter tactic.

Finally it would be good to be reassured that the club are actively monitoring the ongoing smear campaign against current and former directors over land deals, bank loans, state aid etc. they grow more embittered and bizarre by the day . Once the officials at the eu have booted this craziness into touch, I would like to think our club will prepare a withering response for the fag packet bloggers.

Too much has been allowed to fester. Time to pick ourselves up .

JPT delivered them because that is part of his role.

Lets give the man a chance to do his job, part of which will be to persuade his bosses what needs to be done to help him do his job.

I guess you meant “rational explanation” rather than “rationale explanation”. You have written the same phrase on a number of occasions tonight so I surmise it is deliberate. Adding an e to a word doesn’t turn you into an intellectual. Even I wouldn’t call you a fané.

Rationale or rational really is the height of irony when juxtaposed with your nom de blog.

maybe i have mis placed the phrase, however we need to continue with what we are doing and not join in with the circus. Our efforts need to be placed strengthening Celtic not trying to change the SFA, it will never happen.

  11. On a happy note, two years ago today I gained another podium, my finest, possibly.

The 1888th post on one blog and seconds later first on the next is another fond memory!

Neil Lennon and I share something in common, both Managers of the Month for January, ok mine was only for predictions games, but He Ho, take triumphs where you find them.

  12. on a side note, just before switching off BBC Scottish football podcasts, the no mark pundits were all claiming if given Celtics budget, they reckoned they could all have a crack and succeed in winning the title with Celtic in the SPL.

These arses all think its as easy as playing Football Manager and saving before each game just in case it doesn’t go to plan!

That’s a real insult to any Manager at any level.

  15. The ONLY important thing to Celtic is THE BOTTOM LINE.

That’s all. As fans we only have one tool in our tool box to encourage Celtic to address the increasing criticisms.

Fans do not vote SFA/SPFL personnel in, clubs do.

    Fans have only one tool.

Your are bang on, our silence is a festering boil , that if not lanced, will consume us totally .

Our board are betraying our kids and grand kids and slurring the memories of our fathers and grandfathers .

Now is the time for an all out attack on all comers.

Let justice be done , or the heavens fall.

    It’s us or them!!

  18. You see this is the thing here,JPT is being championed as the go to guy for us the Celtic Supporters, and that’s a good thing right? Nooooooo, it’s not a good thing for some in here as they see the CST as the go to guys, any time Celtic make an attempt to listen to the fans as they are doing now, JF and her press gang will be all over it with negativities, like some are doing right now, they are so predictable honestly, they’re only happy when they have US the supporters divided, all part of there agenda it’s what they do.

my point was not a slur on JP but at the man in charge, he should be answering the questions that the fans have

    ================

Does it matter who gives the answers BT? They will only be a statement of club policy.

One of the reasons it takes ages to make progress is everything goes through PL and he can only be in one place at the one time.

The Supporters Forum as described is a move away from the current fragmented communication channel of which PL is a part. A real truth spoken one week, through circumstances a week later no longer stands. Does that make the original a lie or a consequence of changed circumstances? As I said we get fragmented results because the whole approach is fragmented.

It is daft on both sides of the fence, support and Board.

My view of the Supporters Forum is that one of its first objectives should be to build a channel everyone trusts and you do that a bit at a time but it has to start somewhere.

For me a start would be separating what Celtic can fix within their immediate remit, like ticketing (UEFA games excluded), from what the cannot, like match scheduling on games that TV dictate

Some of the points I have heard for inaction from Celtic sound to me like excuses, others like reasons.

An excuse to me is when you can or could have done something about a situation but could not be bothered.

A reason is when I accept that it was not within your power to bring about the desired the result.

The wisdom is in knowing the difference as The Communication Serenity Prayer tries to articulate..
