Gang of 10 changes will destroy Celtic

374

The BBC today report that the Gang of 10 SPL clubs have agreed a plan to re-write the rulebook of Scottish football in order to parachute Sevco into the second tier of the game.  They also report that Hibernian, Rod Petrie, briefed Charles Green of Sevco on their conditions to accept his company.  These conditions involve paying Rangers football debts and fines.

The plan involved the most almighty reorganisation of the league structure in order to gain enough support from lower league clubs to entice them to agree to place Sevco in the First Division.  They also want to take YOUR money in perpetuity to buy votes from lower league clubs, and have included a provision to allow them to vote for a share of home gates – all to establish a club called ‘Rangers’.

Crucially, the SFA, led by president Campbell Ogilvie and chief exec, Stewart Regan, have colluded in this scheme by not instructing the Appellate Panel to convene to consider Rangers punishment after the Court of Sessions told them to do so 30 days ago.  It is expected the Appellate Panel will suspend ‘Rangers’ from football for a year when it convenes.

The Gang of 10’s plan would require Rangers to withdraw their objection to the initial Appellate Panel ruling but it would also require the independent judicial overview of Scottish football to end before action is taken against the club for illegally registering players for over a decade, or for improper use of EBTs to scape social taxes, both of which are likely to expel the club.

Disciplinary rules cannot be changed because ‘Rangers’ are about to be punished.  Leagues cannot be restructured to allow a team bearing the name ‘Rangers’ an easy passage to the top.  This is no longer sport.

The utter stupidity of this scheme is staggering.  They are making plans with a man who owns a stadium but who cannot call on any supporters.  They are about to wreck Scottish football for a company who have yet to establish their financial viability.

Your money is being bargained away by every club in the SPL apart from Celtic.  Are you happy about this?  Will you continue to pay for Sky TV or ESPN?  Will you continue to buy tickets to attend away games?  Will you ever attend a League Cup or Scottish Cup game again?

Celtic paid their bills and conducted their business fairly and properly.  Be under no illusion, these changes will destroy the Celtic you recognise.  Forget your Champions League trips, you’ll be scraping the bottom of the barrel with ‘Sevco Rangers’ in a few years.  We cannot be exploited in this way.

It’s time the entire edifice of Scottish football was brought asunder, better that than be subject to random acts of destruction.  I cannot support any operation funding this enterprise so I’m cancelling Sky Sports and ESPN.

It is human nature to rush to quick fixes when in a crisis when you should sit back and analyse root cause, build a good understanding of where you are now, set a goal of where you want to go and plan the transition(with measurement to show benefit).

Not sure who coined the phrase but a good analogy is “let the wind take you forward for a while before you start setting the sails”

The “wind” here is the current structure, rules and penaties to be applied. Any new vison and plan must come after Rangers are dealt with.

If the crisis here is revenues for clubs other than Celtic then come up with a containment action within the current structure while you re-design

    e.g. family packages

The SFL were responding to reports that plans are being put in place that would see the Ibrox club relegated from the Scottish Premier League to the First Division with immediate effect.

Charles Green’s new company is unlikely to gain enough support for entry to the top flight when the 12 SPL clubs meet on July 4 the vote on the issue.

    DISGUSTED

    Steven Pressley

    Published on Thursday 28 June 2012 13:11

u STENHOUSEMUIR and East Stirlingshire won’t be drawn on Rangers – but Falkirk boss Steven Pressley says he’ll be “disgusted” if chairmen don’t follow Martin Ritchie’s lead.

The Falkirk chairman sent a powerful statement last week calling for wholesale changes in football before Rangers are admitted to the Scottish Football League.

But the Bairns boss fears a compromise where the Glasgow club will be parachuted into Falkirk’s division without a transfer embargo and for what he considers a token gesture of a play-off place and £50,000 for the remaining clubs – a deal that sells the rest of the SFL short.

“If we reach a compromise that has Rangers in the First Division with enhanced finances for clubs in the SFL – albeit minimal and are given the carrot of an additional place in the SPL via a play-off – then I’ll be disgusted with our football authorities.

“We’ll have found a solution for Rangers’ situation and not for the game in general.

“I’m not saying plunge Rangers to the bottom, and leave them with nothing because Rangers have a place in Scottish football.

“I’m saying that the rest of the chairmen cannot sell themselves short this time. It is time for the chairmen of the Scottish Football League to show courage. We need to find the right place and for the good of our game.

“We need bigger leagues, and fairer distribution of wealth. But I just fear the compromise for allowing Rangers won’t be enough, just a play-off place and a financial payment that is a drop in the ocean in relative terms.

“This is a time for real courage, and radical change for our game.”

Members of the Scottish Football League are scheduled to meet on Tuesday for discussions over the potential admission of the Glasgow club.

But both East Stirlingshire and Stenhousemuir have refused to show their hand as the Bairns chairman did when demanding change in return for Rangers to be switched from SPL to SFL after liquidation.

East Stirlingshire have already discussed the matter and concluded they’ll “wait and see”.

Shire secretary Tadek Kopszywa told The Falkirk Herald: “We don’t have a decision to make at the moment and we don’t have a view. When we have a role to play, we will play it.”

“Until such a time that we’re required to take a position and making a decision is necessary there is no need to act on anything else.”

The Warriors will meet on Monday night but chairman Bill Darroch issued a statement from holiday: “At present there have been no proposals tabled by the Scottish Football League.

“With so much conjecture it is reasonable that we wait for concrete proposals to consider and make a valued judgement from there.”

That’s in stark contrast to Pressley’s forthright views which back up Martin Ritchie’s statement on the Falkirk club website last week.

In it he appealed for changes if Rangers are to be accepted into the SFL. He said: “The board at Falkirk strongly believe the current turmoil should be a catalyst for change in Scottish football – league reconstruction, First Division play-offs, a fairer distribution of the game’s wealth and the ending of undemocratic voting systems should be the minimum.

“It would be totally unacceptable if a ‘Rangers Newco’ were admitted to the on the current rules.

“Even a weakened ‘Rangers Newco’ would have resources that far outstripped all other First Division clubs and this would pretty much guarantee them promotion.

“Fairness is a word not often quoted in the current situation. However, I think it is worth reminding everyone that when Falkirk FC were faced with provision liquidation in 1998, the new consortium of owners paid every creditor (including the Inland Revenue) in full.

“If we had gone down the route taken by many clubs since then, paying only a fraction to creditors, we would have resources to accelerate stadium development and make an earlier return to the SPL.”

THERE IS NO RANGERS TO RELEGATE!!

To relegate them you would have to vote them into the SPL first. That going to happen in the next few weeks after the statements from the fans and the clubs themselves.

  19. It may be time for us to walk away.

If the rules are bent and distorted to the point where Celtic maintaining a 60,000 seater stadium have to pay for the up keep of others, then the time has come.

Refuse to apply to the new structure or apply and refuse to pay. Let them pay to fight their battles with us.

  20. ASonOfDan @ 13:44

    Agreed.

It’s all obfuscation imo. The only way they can have some kind of Orc FC competing within the next few years is when one of the “consortiums” finds out where the stadium deeds are kept and whose name on them, and then they will fastrack the purchase of Cowdenbeath at a knockdown price and move it to Ipox.

That’s their only hope and the most likely outcome imo.

It’s the only explanation as well as to why there is still a lot of meeja nonsense and behind the scenes manipulation regarding an ugly entity that is genuinely deid and irresurrectible.

  21. Can I ask those suggesting Celtic resign from the league/SFA/whatever just to think that one through a little?

    What next after resigning?

    Where do we play?

I’ve heard it suggested that we travel the world playing high-profile friendlies?

If that isn’t the daftest idea I’ve ever heard then I don’t know..

What quality of player is going to want to spend their “career” playing meaningless fundraisers rather than challenging for real honours in a real competition?

So the Celtic players we know now wont be hanging around, and who’d blame them? Not me.

How many talented kids will chose to come to Celtic to learn their trade when the best they can hope for is to be sold or to play friendlies? Not many would be my guess.

For Celtic to resign with nowhere to go would be suicide. We would be left with no leverage or power yet dependent on a quick resolution in our favour in order to survive. Anybody who wished to do us harm or kill us off would need to do nothing more than prolong the process until we choked ourselves.

So please think about the consequences of Celtic, without alternative arrangements full in place, withdrawing from Scottish football before you start demanding it. It is the most absurdly stupid notion I have ever heard.

As for the proposals. I just don’t see them pushing them through..waaay too many obstacles in their way. My guess is they’re just testing the water with this one.

The tactic should be to tell UEFA that if they do not step in thay Celtic will have no option but to go to law to prove SFA should be replaced.

UEFA if they had brains would use the opportunity to shut down the SFA and order the FA, on threat of barring England and English clubs to form a UK FA and incorporate Scottish clubs into English leagues. A tournament to let clubs contest where they should be placed should be devised with our top clubs playing promotion candidates in each league. That would be a nice money spinner as well as heeding sporting merit.

  30. What I cannot understand is when the Gang of Ten bleat about an equalizing of revenue streams etc…what do they think is happening with the TV deal already? Celtic are tied into a deal with all the other SPL clubs. If we could independently negotiate our own TV deal ala Barca/Real then we would almost certainly make much more money than we do now. Didn’t we make something like a million from the 2-2 “Broonie” cup game including the replay a few year ago? We could negotiate our own deal because it was a cup game.

What amount of money do these clubs think they would get from ESPN/Sky if we had our own TV deal separate from theirs?

That in itself is fair compromise by Celtic.
