Gang of 10 SPL clubs set to deliver hammer blow to Rangers

747

It has been another busy news day but for now we’ll concentrate on the two most important matters.

10 SPL clubs, excluding Celtic and Rangers, have arranged to meet next week.  This is the most significant news since Craig Whyte bought Rangers in May last year.  One SPL chairman told the BBC:

“With the Old Firm having talked in the past about leaving Scottish football, we have had to think about a future without them.

“Part of that situation could be about to come true, so we have had time to think about how we would get on without them.”

The smaller 10 SPL clubs have a once-only opportunity to redraw the power and financial map in Scottish football.  They want more of your money and this is their chance to get it.  They also want to be able to vote crazy ideas into the league that benefit teams without many fans or good players.

This is perfectly understandable and expected.  The distribution of TV income currently favours successful clubs, who are invariably featured most often.  Smaller clubs want to change this into a more equitable distribution model.  You and I will still buy the overwhelming majority of subscriptions, but our club will receive less cash from the TV deal.

“Part of that situation” refers to an SPL without Rangers.  This meeting is likely to end Newco Rangers hopes of getting straight back into the SPL in their tracks.  Without knowing the numbers in favour of a change, this looks like the killer blow, delivered before any proposition from Craig Whyte reaches the agenda.

We have discussed the need for Whyte to present a fait-accompli in order to get his wish.  Having been unable to do that, others had the opportunity to organise and make alternative plans.

The other important occurrence today was the attendance at the Rolls Building courts in London today by HMRC lawyers, keen to secure any monies seized from Collyer Bristows’ client account last week.  HMRC have made it perfectly clear they are all over Duff and Phelps and will seek court intervention to secure their rights.

This is significant.

You can make what you like about a more even distribution of SPL TV money, or the possibility of being held to ransom in future by bad teams who want to vote themselves out of relegation, but the only thing we know for sure is that this has been a profoundly bad day for Craig Whyte and anyone else hoping to phoenix a Newco Rangers.

In light of today‘s developments,  Mr Whyte and the administrators have some thinking to do before announcing any plans tomorrow.

Before I make my point, can I just say I am desperate for Rankers to die.

I run my own business and have been stung for bad debts over the years, not a nice feeling. Until the laws are changed in this country, there is nothing really to stop you going out of business today and opening up as a new company tomorrow, which in theory is what Mr White/Whyte is trying to do. My take on that part is, if you close today, you should not be allowed credit with your previous suppliers/creditors tomorrow. It is the choice of suppliers if they want to do business with you again and that’s where it falls down. They should not trade with a firm who has went ‘burst’, all they are doing is encouraging them to do it again and again, as is seen here with Whytey bhoy.

As for a newco entering a league. I would love for that mob to die and never kick another football again, but the reality is they will phoenix as something. If they do, well let’s just see how good they are and how they are needed for the sake of Scottish football. Let them go into division 3, share their wealth with div 3 clubs, then div 2, the div 1, assuming they get promoted, that way all of Scottish clubs will prosper. All for the good of Scottish football, let Alloa, Morton, Peterhead, Annan Athletic etc etc ‘benefit’ from the visiting rampaging huns. That way it is the whole of Scotland who ‘benefits’ and not the ‘elite’.

If they are parachuted straight back into SPhell, that is a disgrace and shows the footballing administrators for what they are, dirty, cheating, masonic, hun, barstewards.

  2. A Plea to Celtic Football Club This is the time to ditch sky sports ,set up our own sports station showing all live and away games.me personaly i would like to give my sky subscription to celtic.could celtic achieve this ?

  3. Snake Plissken on

One school of thought is the other teams will accept newco back in but only on their terms?

If this is the case what can Celtic realistically do about this?

Resign the league? To go where?

I cannot see all of these teams saying to newco Division 3.

Aberdeen, Hibs, Hearts, Dundee United – yes

St Mirren and Inverness – No idea

Motherwell, Dunfermline, Kilmarnock and St Johnstone – in my view will be pro-Newco but only with a bigger slice of TV money.

I am now thinking that Sky pulling the plug is the only way to get the rules enforced as it is the chief excuse unless another TV deal comes in to play from somewhere else but the BBC? We know what their sports department is all about so forget that minus newco.

    STV? Their propaganda channel.

Setanta are gone and Premier Sports is not realistic.

ESPN? Maybe but who knows. Burley is there so they care little for our opinion.

    We are being outmaneuvered here.

I really wish Celtic would come out and say something about the future of the game in Scotland. We need decisive leadership and we need to let the other sides know we hold the aces where TV is concerned and they cannot beat us into submission by a backdoor deal to readmit newco so long as they change a voting structure and get more money.

I am all for the TV money being divided up evenly but not if it means they’ll let Rangers back in as newco even with a paltry 3 season point deduction on top of UEFA sanctions of no Europe. The Scottish authorities have no control over the 3 year Euro ban and it is therefore not a Scottish punishment.

A point deduction for a debt free club masquerading as a former superpower could see them back up there again pretty quickly and I want them to have a decade in the wilderness from division 3 – another 5 years at least of not being champions and then lets see if they can catch us.

The verdict from the EBT case and the two contracts makes such a move untenable if Rangers lose both cases – Rod Petrie at least has shown his displeasure at the rules not being applied and I think he shares the point of view that it is SFL and work your way up.

Should Rangers be found to have cheated every side in Scotland through financial doping AND/OR two contracts as off the books wages surely even our craven cap doffing country of Rangers apologists cannot slime them out of it?

Celtic must wait and see on all fronts but I would like some noises to come out from our custodians sooner rather than later making it clear what will not be tolerated.

    We live in amazing times.

  4. Celtic have cancelled their press conference tomorrow ahead of the Utd game. P1ssed off at the media sniping this week or something else?

    =========

    Good move I think.

The press would ask only about Rangers and set out their traps.

For now Celtic need to keep their own counsel.

  9. Celtic now need to kill the Old Firm tag stone dead.

Distance our club from anything to do with Rangers.

We need to do this pro-actively.

As someone said recently, “we don’t need no stinkin’ Rangers”

  10. Kilmarnock one of the teams who are going to dictate to Celtic.

Allocated 17000 tickets for cup final. Only sold 9000 and habe today begged people in Kilmarnock to buy tickets.

    Enough said!

A 16-Team League without Rangers sounds good to me! :-)

I think a great way to split the revenue fairly AND to ensure healthy competition would be simply to divide up any pot into the number of possible points across all teams and award each team pro-rata on the basis of the amount of points gained. Think about it… This would mean no more meaningless games right up until the end of the season and absolutely no ‘easy’ games right up until the end of the season; not when the lower league teams are still playing for their livelihood’s…

This would also be a great opportunity to get rid of the stupid and discredited league split.

To encourage flair play (I did say ‘flair’ not ‘fair’) would be to have a smaller 2nd pot which is cut up and distributed percentage-wise based on the split of a team’s percentage of the total league goals scored. Some Celtic Fans might argue that this would actually encourage other teams to ‘shut up shop’ when they play Celtic as either not conceding or not losing too heavily would actually have the effect of increasing that team’s percentage of the 2nd pot. Perhaps also it would encourage us to be much more ‘ruthless’ in front of goal?

Some interesting thoughts: all we need now is for Rangers to be liquidated!

Another thought I have is one regarding Celtic’s 2nd away strip. EVERY CELTIC FAN KNOWS that Celtic play best in the Hoops!!!! Why then don’t we have a 2nd away jersey that is EXACTLY like the 1st Hooped Jersey in all respects EXCEPT that between our beloved Hoops there is a 2nd smaller hoop of (reclaimed) orange and/or blue? This could come to symbolise us/Celtic having overcome all the cheating odds stacked historically against us. With that sort of ‘underground’ marketing I personally think this would sell massively! What do you think ghuys?

    Yours in Celtic,

    TB&F.

P.S. My favourite Drink? Right now it’s got be liquidated orange.

  12. haven’t read any comments yet but i am far happier reading tonight than i was this morning!

    No to Newco

    Are we CHAMPIONS yet??????

  13. justshatered on

I’m quite happy for the ten to meet.

    Celtic should send them a letter, on unheaded note paper, via one of the other chairmen making a simple offer;

TV money to be split evenly between all clubs and an end to the 11-1 vote blocker.

BUT to be implemented only after newco’s application is rejected.

The reason for the unheaded note paper is simple. Imagine if the document gets into the worng hands.

The implementation after newco’s rejection is also simple. If it is changed beforehand then the vote to grant newco’s entry becomes a simple majority vote.

Celtic though must have valued their support enough to have their brand splattered all over the Hoops.

  24. If Ranjurs are papped out of the SPL, the other 10 clubs will be very dependent on gate income from their games against us. For this reason, they will want to keep us onside.

  25. The laptop loyal will be raging they cannot try and get a negative headline from Celtic.

They can go and freeze their baws off at the gates of Murray Park instead! :)

Lets confuse the hell out of them as we select a partner for the NEW FIRM. As mentioned previously (unfortunately) Jam farts suit the bill. A meeting arranged between Peter Lawell and Romanov (and made very public – like a Glasgow / Edinburgh state visit ) would set the cat among the pigeons and would send twitter a tweeting lol !
