Gang of 10 SPL clubs set to deliver hammer blow to Rangers

747

It has been another busy news day but for now we’ll concentrate on the two most important matters.

10 SPL clubs, excluding Celtic and Rangers, have arranged to meet next week.  This is the most significant news since Craig Whyte bought Rangers in May last year.  One SPL chairman told the BBC:

“With the Old Firm having talked in the past about leaving Scottish football, we have had to think about a future without them.

“Part of that situation could be about to come true, so we have had time to think about how we would get on without them.”

The smaller 10 SPL clubs have a once-only opportunity to redraw the power and financial map in Scottish football.  They want more of your money and this is their chance to get it.  They also want to be able to vote crazy ideas into the league that benefit teams without many fans or good players.

This is perfectly understandable and expected.  The distribution of TV income currently favours successful clubs, who are invariably featured most often.  Smaller clubs want to change this into a more equitable distribution model.  You and I will still buy the overwhelming majority of subscriptions, but our club will receive less cash from the TV deal.

“Part of that situation” refers to an SPL without Rangers.  This meeting is likely to end Newco Rangers hopes of getting straight back into the SPL in their tracks.  Without knowing the numbers in favour of a change, this looks like the killer blow, delivered before any proposition from Craig Whyte reaches the agenda.

We have discussed the need for Whyte to present a fait-accompli in order to get his wish.  Having been unable to do that, others had the opportunity to organise and make alternative plans.

The other important occurrence today was the attendance at the Rolls Building courts in London today by HMRC lawyers, keen to secure any monies seized from Collyer Bristows’ client account last week.  HMRC have made it perfectly clear they are all over Duff and Phelps and will seek court intervention to secure their rights.

This is significant.

You can make what you like about a more even distribution of SPL TV money, or the possibility of being held to ransom in future by bad teams who want to vote themselves out of relegation, but the only thing we know for sure is that this has been a profoundly bad day for Craig Whyte and anyone else hoping to phoenix a Newco Rangers.

In light of today‘s developments,  Mr Whyte and the administrators have some thinking to do before announcing any plans tomorrow.

This is making my head spin, and I’ve forgotten things I thought I knew just a week or two ago

Re UEFA deadline 31st march. They’d have to be (1) out of administration and (2) no outstanding tax bills?

The 11-1 split is such because we usually vote wi Rangers and veto out proposals.

The other 10 are actually edging Celtic to show their true colours

Will Celtic defend Rangers to protect their own money, or help bring about a more equitable structure?

    That’s why we weren’t invited!

These boards have for years (including today ironically) had fan polls wanting Celtic to join the Irish League, Atlantic League, North West Fisheries League, anything not to be in the SPL, its a tad rich for Celtic fans to moan as soon as the diddy teams want a bigger slice of the pie. They are only looking for more money just as we are.

I’ll hold onto the fact that newco will have no history whatever it does, the gadges’ll be screamin’ for stars on the zombie jersey,so for me its a case of 54 tainted titles and halted,in 15 years max we’ll have surpassed it and with the big cup too boot!

Said it the other day, get ready for 16 team SPL1 & SPL2 with Newco Hun going into the latter for all of one season out of the top flight. “Punished”, no Euro income for three years and financially limited.

The mother of all compromises, but nothing else will be palatable to the other clubs and Sectarian Football Association. Reduced TV revenue for us, big deal as it’s a small percentage of our income.

European re-construction….deliver us from this backwater.

Is the Scottish Football League not the oldest in the World? Its definetley one of the top two.

Does Scottish football ruin all that by breaking rules and setting up new rules after all this time?

Aye batter in, kick hell out yer self without thinking.

I thought it affects their licence to play in the SPL as well if they haven’t got their house in order by the 31st?

Bilbao a joy to watch, tearing Man U a new one. Amazed it’s only 2-1. Still 16 minutes left though…

That goal has been coming. Went to Camp Nou last year to see Barça v Bilbao, cracking team Bilbao.

    Good ManU getting beat :)

Noticed a special delivery note behind the door when I came in. That can only be the hun tickets, hope the game does go ahead because I want my last memory against the 140 year old club to be a victory rather than a 4-2 defeat.

  16. Paul,

If Rangers are relegated to league 3, Celtic could offer to include their young team in same division. This would eventually become competitive for Rangers within 3 years I would expect capacity crowds for those game. Downside is there evil followers will still be around… Obviously, no Celtic first team players can play.

As part of the deal, Celtic, with the support and permission of SFA will be allowed to apply to English Football League, to be completed within 3 years. This should be attractive to SKY as several big English teams will have followed Portsmouth.

Once Celtic are in English League, SFA must agree that Celtic Young team can move up divisions provided they top their division and so on, back to Premier. Obviously, Rangers should be moving up again to Premier.

During this period, the other teams should become more competitive ( as they will have bigger share of the pot) and ready to challenge the big two. This should revitalise the Scottish game. A win, win, situation for all, especially us.

Paul I wrote this morning that I did not agree with your thoughts on Whyte’s pre-pack as I felt the HMRC would not allow this. I am glad that their appearance at court this morning to lodge a counter claim on the money D&F were seeking appears to have changed your view on the situation.

In my view the ‘we are doomed in 48 hours’ speech on Wednesday was to get the holding out players (in reality their agents) to agree to the wage cuts. They also shut down the discussions not the agents presumably because they thought they had a straight run at the £3.6m this morning in court and not expecting Hector to appear and force a trial. Despite all the noises that this has been a good day in court the reality is that after the trial even if RFCIA is successful in its application HMRC and/or the others will appeal. These funds will not be available for some considerable time. Did they plan to use this money to limp along until a package could be put together thus avoiding wage cuts or redundancies saying this was the unexpected funds they had said was needed.

I cannot say I agree with you view that the meeting of the 10 puts the scuppers on the planned Newco. In fact I think this makes it even more likely that the 10 are going to agree to their entry but want to agree the price which the compliant Newco has to pay for their support. Agreeing to a bigger cut/power for the 10 and present us with a fait accompli proposition.

  18. Just done a bit of research.

We go into Third qualifying round and then it is the play off.

Good thing is we dont get an Arsenal.

I wonder how tour of USA fits into all this.

under new legislation that strip could be offensive because it reflects a flag….

well in Scotland it could be against the law…
