Gangster clubs, brutish fans, identity politics

729

The Daily Record’s political editor today published information obtained from the Scottish Government by a Freedom of Information Request, where Police Scotland note Newco “actively engaged” supporters to break lockdown rules in March this year.

Following Newco’s game with St Mirren on 6 March, Police Scotland received assurances from Newco that they would encourage fans to stay at home.  The Police memo stages, “Whilst assurances were given this did not materialise.”

The Police go on to stage Newco made “numerous statements encouraging celebration, including from the manager (Steven Gerrard).”

“Both the Manager and players actively engaged from within the stadium with fans gathered in disgraceful displays of encouragement, in solid opposition to the public safety issues arising, to their responsibilities given the privileges under which football operates, and to the commitments they had made around public communications.”

The Government should have acted on this information in March.  Football privileges were being actively flouted by one club but it took further incidents this month before Nicola Sturgeon felt it necessary to take on Newco.  This is in stark contrast to her grabbing the mic. when Celtic followed her own rules during their trip to Dubai.

You will see not contrition from Newco.  Instead, they will deflect and distract.  Let them sink in their own sewage.

Gangster clubs operate across Europe.  They stir-up identity sentiment among brutish fans and intimidate politicians who need to fish in the same identity waters.  It takes brave political leadership to stop the rot.

It’s my understand that if a couple of bigots sit in their living room all day long and shout FTP at each other they are not committing a criminal offence provide the public aren’t affected.

And I suspect that the huns will have used that line about the events in the video.

What I think is needed is an unequivocal statement from Police Scotland as to whether or not the video was genuine.

    Actions speak louder words.

All I’ve seen so far are words.

Threat of action has been the introduction of ‘strict liability’ and/or an ‘independent football regulator’ i.e punish/regulate everyone instead of tackling the problem at source (the Huns).

    Having watched Hibs yesterday…

    ____

Agreed. Nothing on display in the final or both semi finals looked that impressive, although Boyle was decent in the semi.

I’ve watched some of the English lower league games in the past couple of weeks and there seemed to be better players there. That said, it’s difficult to compare players in relative terms.

Ziggydoc1 – Yeah I watched the Brentford v Bournemouth game.

Toney looked decent without really standing out, a busy, energetic and athletic forward. He showed up around the pitch, got stuck in and fought for the ball, while still managing to be thereabouts whenever Brentford got into the opposition box. He managed a few duff touches, passes, or shots around the box, but then most players do. What I didn’t see was close skill on the ball, the type Eddie has.

Looked like a 10-15m player. Is he 30m? Yesterday didn’t convince me, but it’s just one game and I could end up eating my words.

I am not in any way condoning the treatment Mark Walters received when he played against us from some of our support.

  12. Are the football authorities investigating the sevco video footage?

Just because criminality is not established does not mean that the game hasn’t been brought into disrepute. I know it won’t achieve much but what is left of the integrity (aye right) of the game demands rules be applied.

  13. EL – he did not backtrack on anything, he called out anti racism agains catholic / irish community. He qualified that he said ‘if’ and accepted police investigate same as he did last week.

    The unanswered question is

Was the video genuine or not?

This is not addressed in Police Scotland’s statement.

If genuine then there must be at least two loop holes in play

One to prevent the f the Pope add on being an offence

One to exclude the event from the existing Covid regulations about drinking indoors

However, if genuine, then this should be made clear, as, criminal or not, it shows them up for what they are and creates an issue with the SFA and SPL

So one question – ‘Is the video genuine?

  18. Watched most of the Brentford game yesterday.

Can’t say that I was overly impressed with Toney. Thought he looked like a championship player. Jensen and Mbuemo were the 2 best players.

  19. Tim Malone Will Tell on

I watch Toney every week. He has been slightly “off form” for the last month but he has the ability to defend, link play, score goals…and is possibly the best penalty taker playing anywhere.

John Mason will give you nothing but the pint. I can assure you he will give no strong opinion, in private, other than to repeat the Party Line which is- we needed the OBaF Act to deal with this but it was voted down so we need Celtic fans to get behind Strict Liabilty now, otherwise our hands are tied (which is a lie). Sad to see a few Football supporters groups, like the SFSA, which constantly spouts SNP propaganda, getting behind this. James Forrest even gave the idea houseroom before dismissing it but, I believe Auldheid and others are willing to consider it, which, to me, is a big mistake.

They believe they can legislate to make us all good little Scotsmen in their own image. But they haven’t yet demonstrated an ability to legislate sensibly to solve the conundrum of what constitutes offensive. It speaks to a lack of confidence in our identity as a nation that we need to follow the one line.

Flag Fetishism and Faux Jacobite Costumes becoming compulsory are the next step.

  22. SCULLYBHOY on 23RD MAY 2021 12:53 PM

I’ve watched Toney a few times and I admit yesterday wasn’t his best game but he’s looked good all season in a competitive league. I think he’ll be in the Premier League next season with or without Brentford for around £25m.

  23. I felt Toney was worth the expenditure but the board obviously did not want Toney and Edouard at the same time.

He has proven himself to be worth the money and he is one we missed out on.

However, it is no use hankering after him, Brendan Rodgers or Riquelme- they are not coming now. There are other promising strikers out there and we need to be looking at them, not Toney or McGinn, who have passed into the “too rich for us” sphere.

While we do not have an appointed manager, we are going to waste our time on “what if” speculations about season 20/21. Just as the US lost Vietnam, no amount of revisionist movies or speculations are gonna end with us winning 10 iar.

We lost our best ever chance of doing it but now we have to suck it up and get on with facing next seaso’s challenge. We have a week left in May to do step 1- Appoint a Bloody Manager

If the Cops advise him that it was indeed ” Doctored”…are Police Enquires continuing to find the Culprit…and IF not…why not ?

“IF the Video Footage was/is genuine, how can Police Scotland possibly state that there was NO Criminiality in relation to possible racist singing/chanting etc, and/or the FACT that the players and Staff were CLEARLY Breaking Covid rules by Drinking INSIDE a Bar etc” ?
