Gangster clubs, brutish fans, identity politics

729

The Daily Record’s political editor today published information obtained from the Scottish Government by a Freedom of Information Request, where Police Scotland note Newco “actively engaged” supporters to break lockdown rules in March this year.

Following Newco’s game with St Mirren on 6 March, Police Scotland received assurances from Newco that they would encourage fans to stay at home.  The Police memo stages, “Whilst assurances were given this did not materialise.”

The Police go on to stage Newco made “numerous statements encouraging celebration, including from the manager (Steven Gerrard).”

“Both the Manager and players actively engaged from within the stadium with fans gathered in disgraceful displays of encouragement, in solid opposition to the public safety issues arising, to their responsibilities given the privileges under which football operates, and to the commitments they had made around public communications.”

The Government should have acted on this information in March.  Football privileges were being actively flouted by one club but it took further incidents this month before Nicola Sturgeon felt it necessary to take on Newco.  This is in stark contrast to her grabbing the mic. when Celtic followed her own rules during their trip to Dubai.

You will see not contrition from Newco.  Instead, they will deflect and distract.  Let them sink in their own sewage.

Gangster clubs operate across Europe.  They stir-up identity sentiment among brutish fans and intimidate politicians who need to fish in the same identity waters.  It takes brave political leadership to stop the rot.

Now that is a story to conjure with.

When Billy/Stephen came to London to find his fortune he took crap jobs & also busked in Leicester Sq.

The story is that Michael Redgrave saw him busking & “offered him a part in a play”.

Redgrave batted for both sides – as the saying goes & there’s more than a little suspicion that this was the spark that drew him to Billy Millar who was not an ugly man (apparently).

IF/when I meet with my MSP, and when discussing the Alcohol Party INSIDE on its ” Own Merit”, IF my MSP attempts to inject the discussion with the now Deceased OBF Act etc, I like to think that the OBF Act does NOT Apply in this particular ” Issue”, as it was the Huns Players and Staff involved ( NOT the Public), and its THEIR Conduct and Behaviour INSIDE Ibrox itself, for which Rainjuiz FC SHOULD be held accountable by the Police and the Scot Gov….and not forgetting the Glasgow Licensing Board ?

IF he attempts to raise the issue of Strict Liability OBF Act, then SURELY I can point out some of the reasons why that ACT was Repelled, as it was/is unworkable ?

  7. I looked in to see if there was any news about a new manager. Instead, the 6th Former with the boring little Trumpite slogans and catchphrases is on. My wife got addicted to CNN in the run-up to the election. Trump loved his little sound bites and thought it was funny to belittle and make sarcastic remarks about those who opposed him. Who does that remind you of? Although he is proof of his own point about cults – people who are in a cult don’t realize it – that’s what makes it a cult.

I do NOT know if this story was/is true, but my DA used to tell me that when BEN HUR Premiered in Glasgow ( it MAY have been in the La Scala Picture Hoose in Sauchiehall Street ? ), STEPHEN BOYD walked Onstage in his Dinner suit and Bowtie etc to give a small speech before the Film was shown.

According to my DA….Many Wummin Folk were almost SWOONING and FAINTING in the audience because of his Chiselled Good Looks… ( Maybe some men too ?) LOL.

In his speech Stephen Boyd told the Audience…..” I do not wish to give too much away about the Movie, but there is a Chariot Race in it…but Just to let you all know beforehand….The RACE was FIXED” !

  12. SFTB – Fair enough, they still have a little fight in them, bless them. Bojo’s purpose with that bloodbath was however clear. He wanted to kill all internal opposition to his brexit withdrawal proposals (the same opposition he had previously lead when directed at Theresa May), replace uppity MPs with placemen/women in the upcoming election, and send a clear message to the rest of the party – Get in line or get out. It was a massive gamble given he was giving up the parliamentary majority, but it worked.

HOLLYWOOD legend Charlton Heston, star of Ben Hur and The 10 Commandments, visited Glasgow a handful of times.

The most recent was in June 1990, when a huge crowd gathered outside the new Cannon cinema (later the ABC) on Sauchiehall Street to welcome him to the city.

He was in town to cut the ribbon for the official launch of the picture house, on the site of the original Hengler’s Circus building, and to promote his latest movie, Treasure Island.

(Hengler’s Circus stood on Sauchiehall Street from 1905 to 1924, and could boast a seating capacity of 1200, plus Glasgow’s first-ever revolving stage, which could even be flooded for aquatic performances.)

Charlton Heston was also in Glasgow after making the Film ” The Greatest Showman on Earth in 1952 promoting his Book and the Film.

There has been some comment on the blog re the infamous Atletico Madrid game at Celtic Park in 1974. I was close to the field directly opposite the tunnel. In the second half, immediately after Ayala had brutally brought down Jinky, then Harry Hood, some of the crowd around me had had enough.

*got that bit back to front, I said he was carded after catching the ball which was a new offence that season, correct he was but it was in the first half near the end of it, he had a bemused look on his face tae.

Most of the support in the Jungle were aware of this rule change though, he did scythe down both the wee mhan and harry harry in the second half but was only carded for this and not sent off, this being his 2nd was why he took the trip up the tunnel, further bemused..

  19. In Toney’s last 14 games he has 2 non-penalty goals and 1 assist.

In the majority of those games he’s played as part of a two, so maybe being the main striker in a 3 suited him better

He looked like he could have played all week and not scored yesterday, he was in the right place often enough but he looked like his confidence in front of goal was shot.

If we were looking to buy him now I’b be concerned at his form in the championship. He looked like a good championship striker but someone who’ll struggle in the premiership.

I think the SNP have had fewer “internal party discussions” break through into public consciousness, because they have exercised either strong discipline or, more likely, strong loyalty to their leadership/majority view.

I actually think some individual SNP MSPs are sound human beings with a good moral compass. And yet, not one spoke out against the illiberal OBaF Act. Not one spoke out about Alex Salmond’s inappropriate behaviour towards women (and to be fair, a few, but not all, would not have witnessed any). A few like Tommy Shephard and Roseanne Cunningham are commited Republicans but suppressed all evidence of that view once they got into contention for an MSP seat.. They all bowed to party discipline not to speak of such things for fear of alienating any voter.

Some of their supporters see this Strong Party Discipline/Loyalty as a good thing, as having a more coherent and passionate identity than other parties. I prefer my Broad Church parties to be not shy of representing their aisle in that church. I don’t regard public discussion of competing trends within a large party to be a sign of weakness. Blair tried to impose this on the Labour Party so it will be a long time before we fall for that again.

Me, I find such unquestioning loyalty to be frightening and dishonest. They end up supporting policies they do not believe in and have lost the power to speak up about their reasons for doing so.

I take some comfort in the emergence of Alba that there is now an “Independence at any cost” Party represented by the reckless Alex Salmond, and the more cautious “Let’s just be in power and keep pointing out the differences betwen us and England but go slow on the Independence Timetable” of Nicola’s SNP. Alex Salmond claims to have the more left wing part now- Tommy Sheridan joining that Swinging Party is evidence of that- and also claims to be stronger in the drive for Independence.

If Nicola is going to win this battle and I think she will, she will be forced to be more open about the economic costs of promoting Independence now but she’ll be in a hard place. Having rubbished all pessimistic forecasts on the Scottish economy, including her own White Paper which was her first attempt to be honest, she will find it hard to backtrack against the comforting message of “It’s all just Project Fear by those big bad English folk”

We are in the middle of a perfect storm. An incompetent and disliked Tory Government in London locking horns with an ineffective Scottish Government having to satisfy an electorate that has been promised Scottish Milk & Honey but sees no great desire in their “independence hungry” parliament to actually establish BigRockCandyMountainLand.

I fear we will blunder into a Referendum, agaisnt Nicola’s judgement , and it will be a replay of the last one, with everyone who wants to have “more local” government, decrying scientific and informed Economic projections as Fake News and Project Fear 2. I have no wish to impose more austerity on my fellow Scots even if we do get a flag that is not the Butcher’s Apron. But then, I’ve never been much of a one for flying flags anyway.

Rangers set to ‘host an event at Westminster’ following MP update

    8th April 2021 Jordan Carlisle

Rangers are set to ‘host an event at Westminster’ after a Northern Irish MP shared a letter from the club in which an invitation is formally accepted.

DUP Member of Parliament for Upper Bann, Carla Lockhart, recently condemned the racist abuse received by Gers stars Glen Kamara and Kemar Roofe via social media.

The MP praised Rangers’ recent success and offered support to players who have received abuse.

Lockhart has since been in contact with Rangers and took to Twitter on Wednesday afternoon to share the response she received from managing director Stewart Robertson.

The lengthy letter begins by thanking the MP for congratulating the club on their title win, before moving on to her support of Kamara and Roofe: “The abuse they received has been truly appalling and it beggars belief that people think this is an acceptable way to treat your fellow human beings.”

Robertson then addresses the club’s campaign against “any form of prejudice in the game” and accepts an “invitation to host an event at Westminster to showcase our Everyone Anyone campaign”, which he describes as “extraordinarily successful.”

“Thanks again for your support,” he concludes. “It’s great to know we have someone in Westminster we can turn to for assistance.”

At this stage, there doesn’t appear to be any set plans for when Rangers’ presentation will take place, with the details likely to be thrashed out in future correspondence.

It looks to be a good opportunity for the Gers to showcase to an important audience all the work that is being done at Ibrox to root out discrimination, though, as they look to show the club in a better light than it is often portrayed in the media.
