Gangster clubs, brutish fans, identity politics

729

The Daily Record’s political editor today published information obtained from the Scottish Government by a Freedom of Information Request, where Police Scotland note Newco “actively engaged” supporters to break lockdown rules in March this year.

Following Newco’s game with St Mirren on 6 March, Police Scotland received assurances from Newco that they would encourage fans to stay at home.  The Police memo stages, “Whilst assurances were given this did not materialise.”

The Police go on to stage Newco made “numerous statements encouraging celebration, including from the manager (Steven Gerrard).”

“Both the Manager and players actively engaged from within the stadium with fans gathered in disgraceful displays of encouragement, in solid opposition to the public safety issues arising, to their responsibilities given the privileges under which football operates, and to the commitments they had made around public communications.”

The Government should have acted on this information in March.  Football privileges were being actively flouted by one club but it took further incidents this month before Nicola Sturgeon felt it necessary to take on Newco.  This is in stark contrast to her grabbing the mic. when Celtic followed her own rules during their trip to Dubai.

You will see not contrition from Newco.  Instead, they will deflect and distract.  Let them sink in their own sewage.

Gangster clubs operate across Europe.  They stir-up identity sentiment among brutish fans and intimidate politicians who need to fish in the same identity waters.  It takes brave political leadership to stop the rot.

  1. ernie makes excellent points and observations all the time, IMHO.

This is a blog, nothing more and nothing less.

  2. When Brendan got us stopping the unstoppable Man City at Home & Abroa…… well doon at the Etihad….. the better result was drawing away against a Team that must have been raging that a Club frae Scotland had stopped their impeccable run.

  3. Just watched SC Final Classics on BBC Scotland, 2017 Final, great programme. Brendan put himself in great company that day, that of Jock Stein and Martin O’Neill. And lest we forget Neil Lennon belongs there, both as a player and Manager. Who knows, as Sandy Denny once sang, where the time goes, and who knows where we lost the drive we had that took us to 9 in a row in 2020. No conspiracy theories from me though, only disappointment, as back in 1975, that we failed only to exceed our own achievements. Our own.

Needless to say I will be supporting Celtic Football Club at the start of next season.

    As always

    …………..

Since you have mentioned ” MONEY”, AGAIN, I will ask you…” WHERE is the £350 MILLION a Week” that the UNIONISTS/Tories/Brexiteers PROMISED on Buses, that would all go to The UK….I repeat The UK…NHS ?

Not the Scottish or Welsh NHS…But the UK’S ?

As you appear to HATE Nationalists so much…It MUST make YOU SICK…When Union Jack UNIONIST Governments are FINALLY forced to APOLOGISE for the Murders of many Irish Nationalists by UK Armed forces over the years ?

I am assuming ( For the moment) that you view yourself as a Celtic Supporter ( SIC)…When you are in Celtic Park against the Huns…Do YOU APPLAUD the Visiting UNIONIST Away support whenever a Union Jag pops up in the Air from the ” Away End”….IF Not…what DO you DO ??

You’re probably right about the first part.

You’re definitely wrong about the second part.

    Not that it matters unduly.

More importantly, still no stock exchange announcement.

I reckon Big Jimmy is going to get to the pub before Celtic get a manager.

    ——–

Big Jimmy – Good morning from a dry Springburn as I am now at work.

Found it really hard to get out of bed this morning and feeling pretty down (if truth be known).

I think I have work related Covid fatigue after being at work all through the last year and doing Risk Assessments, safe systems of work making sure we have enough vehicles and that they are fit for purpose. Putting guys on furlough, taking them off furlough, long term sickness review meetings, Covid incidents and making sure staff affected self isolate etc.

Anyway a lot of people worse off than me, I need to get my act together.

I was looking forward to a bevvy in a pub and talking some shoite.

Hopefully it wont be long now to we can sit and get a pint indoors.

    Sorry for the rant.

Hope you and wee Rocky are as well as can be and please don’t hesitate if you need anything.

    D :)

  16. Well 46 years ago today England did the double over Scotland, 5-1 at Wembley and Mrs Gene getting the better of me at Our Lady and St Benedict’s Bucknall.

Hopefully, with Celtic having a New manager, and Covid restrictions being more relaxed we can CELEBRATE better times ahead with Many Beers ASAP, INSIDE a Pub ?

I do NOT want you to hesitate IF You need anything and I can somehow help ?

“Thats what friends are for”……..as the auld song goes.
