Gary Hooper and Celtic strategy

796

Sky have reported that Celtic have accepted a £5m bid from QPR for Gary Hooper.  Gary is in the final year of his contract and has declined to sign a new deal which has been no offer for almost a year now.

It will surprise some, perhaps including the player, that an English Premier League club have not made a move, but QPR have the cash to compete with most in the top flight, so the financial rewards for the player will be comparable.

For Celtic the proposition is simple, if the player is not going to extend his stay beyond this season, and an offer matching valuation is received, it is better they know where they stand as early in the transfer window as possible.  We’ll know soon enough if the player wants to move.  As we said about Victor, it’s always hard to lose a good one, but I’ve yet to meet someone who would walk away from a deal north of £50k per week, so fair play to Gary, whatever he decides.

Neil Lennon had never hid his admiration for the player but the Celtic strategy is clear enough.  If Gary decides to move it’s all about finding the right replacement, they days of slavishly watching players run down their contracts are over.

Have you done your thing for 1254125 yet?  The supporters group working with Celtic Charity proposed we get as many as possible signed up to running a 10k, hoping each person can raise £125.  We’ve teamed up with The Great Scottish Run on Sunday 6 October and extended the scope a bit, to include those who don’t quite have the legs for 10k.

On Saturday 5 October, The Great Scottish Run also organise supporting events you can enter and raise your £125:

100m Toddler Dask (0-5 yrs)
1.5k Mini Run (5-8 yrs)
2.5k Junior Run (9-15 yrs)
Family Mile (Adults and children from 3 yrs)

If you are particularly fit, you can enter the Half Marathon on the Sunday.  It is going to be a great family weekend.  If you know a kid who is keen to participate and get involved in 1254125, let them know.

If the legs won’t support you for 10k, you can gingerly make your way along the Family Mile.

To sign up you need to register with The Great Scottish Run first.  Register here if you are participating in the 10k or Half Marathon, and here if you are participating in the Saturday events, then register here with Celtic Charity (scroll down the page until you see Great Scottish Run).

Just over 10 weeks to go, get your application in and get every Celtic fan you know with a pair of trainers to sign up.  I’m doing the 10k, so will be out running tonight…….

I think Championship is 3rd highest paying league in the world. QPR are probably the wealthiest team (parachute payments) so I think £50k+ is likeley.

I’ve noticed a few people have said that the Ellsberg is not a freeby for anyone, so I queried it with the ticket office and I received the news that it is a freeby on my book.

    Paul 67 –

New players take time to settle.

If we get into the Champions League with Hooper in the team – Celtic have a player who is proven at that level already, and we’ll make treble the money from our participation in the competition that what his value is likely to be by selling him in this transfer window.

    It’s a win win situation.

  6. Niall McGinn? You are having a laugh. He wasn’t good enough the first time and shining in a bad Aberdeen team is completely different from performing consistently to that level for Celtic. By your logic we should also be going for Michael Higdon.

Celtic need a striker capable of playing at Champions League level and we will not find one currently plying their trade in the SPL. We have coined in from last years CL heroics and now selling Wanyama and it looks like Hooper. We should have at the very least £5m to spare for a transfer fee for a new striker and be able to put them alongside Broony at the top of the CP wage bracket.

  7. Gene, So sorry to hear of death of your brother. It is a hard time for you all,.may God give ye the strength to deal with this loss. Thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I’m a wee bit surprised by the timing…

I was surprised he came on against Cliftonville. Even a slight injury that put him back a month or two might have scuppered a £5m deal.

Having decided nonetheless that we would risk injury we then sell prior to a much more important game. I doubt we have time to get anyone in.

indeed in the transfer merry-go-round I mentioned above.. players like Hosiner and clubs like Austria Wien may want to see out their own CL qualifications…

??? I guess someone has to move first???

“Hooper is very replaceable at £5m imo. Nial McGinn should be standing by his phone …£1m would get him and he scored more than Hooper last year in a much weaker team.”

Hooper scored 31 goals last season – McGinn scored 21.

  11. If we are so cash rich just now, can we not invest some of it in offering the likes of Gary Hooper better terms. If that does not sit well with our long term interests, then I hope he goes as soon as possible. That for me is the least bad option. Personally, I think we will miss him big time in Europe.

  20. Dontbrattbakkinanger on

Not so long ago [ and I agree with this] we were being told that ‘Celtic do not need to sell’.

I would rather we had held on to VW or GH [ preferably both] until after the qualifiers were negociated; it looks like they have both gone to Clubs where being Cup tied for European games is not going to be an issue.

So we are now faced with trying to qualify with a weaker group of players than we had this time last year.

So the Celtic strategy appears to be ‘a pound in the hand is better than points on the park’.

Hoops and Reds fans alike applauded the four-year-old as he made his way onto the pitch ahead of kick-off in the second leg of the sides’ second round encounter on Tuesday night.

And it was a magical night for Oscar, getting to meet the players and soak up the atmosphere.

A host of well-wishers took to Twitter to congratulate him on becoming a mascot – including deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness.

Belfast councillor and former mayor Niall Ó Donnghaile actually got to see the city’s wee ambassador in action as he was at the game, but had to make do with a seat in the stands while Oscar enjoyed the VIP treatment.

“Me and Hoopy the Hound became great friends!” Wee Oscar said.

The little boy earned himself a legion of followers from across Northern Ireland and beyond as he battled the rare and aggressive form of cancer called neuroblastoma.

Celtic boss Neil Lennon was among the many celebrities who backed a massive fundraising campaign to help secure treatment for him.

Wee Oscar was finally given the all-clear earlier this year.
