Sky have reported that Celtic have accepted a £5m bid from QPR for Gary Hooper. Gary is in the final year of his contract and has declined to sign a new deal which has been no offer for almost a year now.
It will surprise some, perhaps including the player, that an English Premier League club have not made a move, but QPR have the cash to compete with most in the top flight, so the financial rewards for the player will be comparable.
For Celtic the proposition is simple, if the player is not going to extend his stay beyond this season, and an offer matching valuation is received, it is better they know where they stand as early in the transfer window as possible. We’ll know soon enough if the player wants to move. As we said about Victor, it’s always hard to lose a good one, but I’ve yet to meet someone who would walk away from a deal north of £50k per week, so fair play to Gary, whatever he decides.
Neil Lennon had never hid his admiration for the player but the Celtic strategy is clear enough. If Gary decides to move it’s all about finding the right replacement, they days of slavishly watching players run down their contracts are over.
Have you done your thing for 1254125 yet? The supporters group working with Celtic Charity proposed we get as many as possible signed up to running a 10k, hoping each person can raise £125. We’ve teamed up with The Great Scottish Run on Sunday 6 October and extended the scope a bit, to include those who don’t quite have the legs for 10k.
On Saturday 5 October, The Great Scottish Run also organise supporting events you can enter and raise your £125:
100m Toddler Dask (0-5 yrs)
1.5k Mini Run (5-8 yrs)
2.5k Junior Run (9-15 yrs)
Family Mile (Adults and children from 3 yrs)
If you are particularly fit, you can enter the Half Marathon on the Sunday. It is going to be a great family weekend. If you know a kid who is keen to participate and get involved in 1254125, let them know.
If the legs won’t support you for 10k, you can gingerly make your way along the Family Mile.
To sign up you need to register with The Great Scottish Run first. Register here if you are participating in the 10k or Half Marathon, and here if you are participating in the Saturday events, then register here with Celtic Charity (scroll down the page until you see Great Scottish Run).
Just over 10 weeks to go, get your application in and get every Celtic fan you know with a pair of trainers to sign up. I’m doing the 10k, so will be out running tonight…….

That’s a great quote but Brutus was killed and his legions annihilated at the Battle of Philippi.

Rudnevs, Odemwinge,Hoisner would be awesome
We are on the verge of selling our leading goalscorer, who has scored 82 goals for us in 138 matches, and some want to bring in Kevin Doyle.
In the last four seasons he has scored 30 goals for Wolves.
He will turn 30 in September.
Not for me I’m afraid.
HH!!

Odemwinge the edjit who drove to QPR on a nudge and a wink from harry…
Yer havin a giraffe !
Doyle won’t make us money so if he comes to Celtic have we changed our business plan?
QPR was a red herring…Doyle probably is too. He dopesn’t fit any criteria that I can think of. He would be way out of kilter with Celtic signing policy. Paper talk..best ignored IMO.
A lot of Bhoys getting very worried about losing Hooper.
I think we can all agree that losing him shouldn’t really affect the outcome of our domestic season. Therefore its really a question of how his departure will effect our European performances.
In Europe you need to be a littler more clever, a little more subtle, you need to vary your game. That isn’t Hooper’s game. He doesn’t go into wide channels, he doesn’t drop back into midfield, he doesn’t make looping runs. He simply plays off the shoulder. That’s fine. He does it very well. But there is no variety.
That style of play can only take you so far, especially against top class opposition.
This is why Samaras is our strongest European performer – because he is different, varied and intelligent. The same could be said about Commons.
I dont think we will miss Hooper in Europe one bit.
So, as sad as it is, £5.5m – spanks very much. See you later.
Que sera sera.
Canny believe all the “in Lenny we trust brigade” no trusting Lenny
It no like going lot for a loaf. If you up a loaf you don’t need to ask it if it wants to go your house and the shopkeeper has put the loaf there in the first place to tempt you.
Buying a 30 goal a season striker is a wee bit more difficult and there a many reasons, unknown to us, that make such a purchase even more problematic.
But you always blame the board and Peter Lawwell.

i prefer if our signings are not gambles
Lots of people in this neck of the woods hoping Kevin signs for us….all Wolves fans.
There have been a few posters on here who do rate him, so, if he signs, then I hope they are proved correct.
My concerns are is that he isn’t the type of player who will replace Hooper.
I agree with coultsbhoy don’t think doyle is in our plans, the Latvian bhoy would do very nicely please
If Hooper had stayed, I am sure that next season he would have joined a select band of Celtic players who have scored 100+ goals for the club.
Only 28 of them have managed the feat in 125 years.

There’s something there with McGinn. imo
But, I would be afraid that he would be mismanaged in the way that Joe Miller was.imo
You see – Joe Miller was being played through the middle for Aberdeen or, in the hole behind the strikers and was banging them in for the Dons. When JM came to Celtic, he was played as a winger ?
When the novelty of JM’s signing wore off ye could tell that he wisny a happy player.
That frustrated JM to the extent that he was on the verge of throwing his jersey at big Billy one night at Hamdump in a SF v’s Aberdeen. JM was played through the middle for us in the last 3 games of the season 1988/89 and he scored in them all. The last one of course being the SCF v’s the huns. The Joe Miller Final.
I fear that if, NM had to come here the same thing would happen to him. Unless Tony stokes move on. NM definately has a new lease of life about him just now. imo
He is also within the boreds price range.
Only saying

Odemwinge threw his toys oot the pram a west brom he certainly wouldn’t fancy a wet night at ross county or inverness
on doyle, he aint exactly a penalty box player is he?
Doyle is a decent player, just not what we need in style or age terms. We need a younger goalscorer. It’s a difficult position to fill as any player who scores a lot of goals quickly attracts attention and has a big price tag attached.

………….
bombscare, any player that goes to another clubs training ground to try and arrange a transfer to said club, WITHOUT his own clubs permission should not even be considered.
Wee Joe Miller – Celtic legend.
The 1989 Cup Final will live in the memory for ever.

Is Gary Hooper still a Celt? If he is, I would advise that we offer him something along the lines Norwich are offering. It’s not the old “specualte to accumulate” but using our ready cash rather than put it in the bank. He’s far better than the likes of Doyle, imo.
I think Doyle would be a great signing for the bhoys. Hes a great strong player and would score a lot of goals for us. Just needs to get his confidence back again and at us i think he could do it. At one stage Id rather he was playing before Robbie Keane in the ireland team. Think we should of signed russell as well when we had the chance.
Bring big doylers in Neil!

Surely the criteria for signings must be :-
Be better than what we have, or have the potential to be better than what we have. Can some of the players mentioned here meet this?
To reiterate what has been previously posted, strong dependency remains on our scouting system. It has to be better than any of our rivals, to buy cheaply, maximise potential and move on when it suits. ( Both in price and also timing )
I would love a marquis signing, but too often in the past we have signed ” big names ” who have always wanted to play for Celtic for excessive wages for little or no return.
HH, always in Celtic.

Still Laughin’
I hope we don’t catch a cold with this one and end up crying in our spilled Milk (or Magners). Selling your top striker without a replacement less than one week before a crucial champions league tie is bad timing = maybe bad management. If Hooper decides to stay then fine (the board and Neil have played a boosting blinder) if he goes…..we might well be caught short, Russian Roulette comes to mind. Imagine a season without Europe – unbearable.
Hooper passes medical at Norwich, reported will sign tonight.
Whither the cash strapped scrofulous hillbillies the day?
