Gerrard good appointment for club with short-term challenges

389

Newco have struggled for relevance this season, even among their own supporters, who have been increasingly disengaged.  They are an object of fun domestically and were not quoted outside of Scotland.  Now they are relevant.  They are being discussed in news programmes and by football commentators outside Scotland, and not because of an embarrassing defeat.

The appointment will ensure the renewal of thousands of season tickets that may otherwise not have been purchased, so for the first season, it will self-finance.  For a club with huge short-term challenges, this money he will bring in over the next six weeks makes the appointment of Steven Gerrard as manager a good one.  July’s Europa League qualifiers are a long way off.

This is true even though he has less experience than McCoist, McDowell, Warburton, Caixinha and Murty.  Gerrard has never taken charge of a full team of adults.  He will have no money to compete with Celtic and will need to pitch his tactical brain against Neil Lennon and Derek McInnes next season.  Results will be predictable, you can be assured of that.

Despite his warm welcome yesterday, he is, of course, another Celtic Brother.  This fact will visit him with the vitriol which became familiar during Murty and Caixinha’s reign soon enough.

All of this means we get to dismantle some fantasies next season, just as we did this season and last.  I see no downside.

  1. Big cup thanks, it fair brightens up an already beautiful Sunday and lifts the spirits.

My wife is going nuts with me, I have had that tune on for a week at least, she just said to me “you are 52 years of age and you are acting like a teenager” . If I was a teenager again, I would just be getting in from last night, nudge, nudge, wink, wink.

Didn’t go down well, anyway 20 mins to pub time.

I know what you mean about the wife giving you into trouble. I have been as high as a kite these last few weeks and I’m nearly 58. You would think they would be happy for you instead of biting your ear about it.

    KEEP THE FAITH

  3. In the past few years, I have picked a “best of the rest” team in hte SPFL based on who has had a good season. Usually I leave the Sevco players out because I canot rate them objectively. It is a sign of how rubbish they have become that I can include them this year and, it is surprising how they still fare. The only ones I would consider adding to Celtic are Christie and McGinn, but I fear they may both fall just short of our level.

My team of the year (best of the rest) would be :-

McLaughlin (Hearts)- nothing special but a competent keeper- Bain did not play enough

Tait (Well)- A dirty player but a trier- every team needs one

Berra (Hearts) I really don’t rate him but he has had a good season in a young team

McKenna (Dons)- again a big raw centre half with few top class traits

Mitchell (Hearts)- great attacker- suspect defender

Shinnie (Dons)- impressed most as we gubbed them. Their only player who did not stop

McGeouch (Hibs)- outshone McGinn for me- coming of age

Cadden (Well)- looks a player and is very direct

McGinn (Hibs)- always influences matches, just think he lacks flair

Christie (Dons)- had a great first half before fading

Boyd (Killie)- hard to ignore the fat lad who has been rejuvenated by Stevie C.

Subs: Carson (Well) , Tavernier (Sevco), Hanlon (Hibs), McLean (Dons), Kamberi (Hibs)
