Gerrymandering SPL with flawed resolutions

661

Resolutions to be voted on at the 30 April meeting are proposals from the Scottish Premier League executive (Neil Doncaster).  They have nothing to do with the Gang of 10 nor are they a Duff and Phelps/Rangers conspiracy.  The resolutions are not set in tablets of stone and have no authority in their own right.  The League has form in voting down executive resolutions, in particular overthrowing plans for a 10 team league last year, so, in theory, the votes could go for or against.

Neil Doncaster, being as thorough as he is, has almost certainly shared his plan with the man along the corridor at Hamden, SFA chief exec, Stewart Regan.  He is also likely to have taken guidance from the Uefa executive, specifically CEO David Taylor, formerly of this parish.  It would be unnecessarily lax to leave legislative loose ends before embarking on such a radical plan, so forget about any intervention by the SFA (cough) or Uefa.

Putting preconceived notions aside (if I can), the resolutions are flawed.

Asking for 8 clubs to vote for a Newco to be allowed into the league, but requiring 11 to vote for a financial penalty to be imposed for an Insolvency Transfer, is beyond ridiculous.  The former provision – the gift of continuity to a defaulter – is easy to achieve.  The latter – the punishment for defaulting – is unnecessarily difficult.  Duff and Phelps will need the support of only one club – let’s say Dunfermline, who are brogue-to-brogue with them anyway and due to relegation will not be affected by the financial penalty, will vote with them.  Why would Doncaster put such a high bar on setting financial penalties?

Arbitrary voting thresholds smack of gerrymandering. Can anyone explain this in any other way?

There will now be a period of debate between clubs; Celtic will oppose any provision for a Newco to enter the league.  Duff and Phelps will be in the opposite corner.  You can expect to hear wailing and gnashing from Rangers (IA) along the same ridiculous lines they have used ahead of the SFA hearings into the behaviour of the club in advance of, and after, Craig Whyte’s purchase of the club.  On that occasion, Duff and Phelps argued that the actions of Rangers’ new owner, or the failure of the old board to conduct their business correctly, should not lead to a penalty on the club.

It doesn’t matter how lax or severe the proposed penalties, Duff and Phelps will oppose them.  Anything lessening of the penalty is worth money to the proposed new buyers of Rangers, so let’s view everything Duff and Phelps say in pound notes.

Rangers have unpaid bills potentially running up to £134mm that’s medicine, operations, road repairs and Help for Heroes.  Allowing them to ditch their history and start afresh, where owners profit by securing a floating charge over the stadium, where fans can continue to be provided with a team in the league, creates an unprecedented moral hazard.  It rewards irresponsibility and would create a queue of clubs ready to do the same.

And on the point of ditching their history… I openly mock anyone who uses phrases like Hybrid Liquidation.  You don’t get Hybrid Liquidation, Partial Liquidation or Liquidation Lite.  You cannot buy or sell history, as Duff and Phelps tried (and failed, I think) to convince Rangers fans.  Liquidation would mean Rangers Football Club, established in 1873 (or 1872 as they now claim), incorporated in 1899, is finished.

Just pay your bills and do us all a favour.

Some crazy notions on here tonight

Anybody proposing that Celtic should resign will

achieve the same result as the crazed orc on FF

    that wants us dead

    i.e. we will be dead.

and to those who say we should play in Div 3

Youse are all off your nut

why do you want to play the victim or the poor martyr.

Has it not occurred to you that we are the strongest,

richest and best supported team in the league.

We should take them on from a position of strength.

It is up to the fans where they spend their money

or where they don’t spend their money.

It is also up to the Club who they play their football

    against

or who they refuse to play

or in which competitions they play in

    or refuse to play in

IMHO if Celtic play a newco ragners in the SPL next

season then they legitimize them and undo at a stroke

all the sacrifices made since MON left.

Getting a newco back int the SPL is a monetary thing

    for the other clubs

However this only works on the presumption that Celtic

will acquiesce and return to the way its always been

If we play hardball they’ll need another plan.

    The easy part is

we don’t have to do anything

at times we just have to do nothing

So if we amass say 90 points ,but fail to complete even the last fixture against Rangers. The penalty would be that all our league points would be deducted from us.

Ernie – I understand that an away bhoycott next season could be viewed as coming too late, a Newco entity would already be playing in the SPL.

I believe you want our board to threaten resignation from the SPL in an attempt to nullify the argument that both “big teams” are required in the league for commercial reasons. Bearing in mind that under current SPL rules a two year notice period is required, are you proposing that our board should threaten to resign at the end of this season or just serve notice that we will be leaving in 2 years time?

If you are proposing the former, then the club will be sued by the SPL and the other clubs for damages due to lost revenue by Celtic not seeing out the required notice period.

If we also follow your advice and apply for the vacant SFL div 3 place, then the effect on our club would be huge – no chance of CL or EL income for at least four years, massively reduced number of season card holders, loss of the majority of corporate sponsorship income, massively downscaled hospitality income, majority of players leaving to play in better leagues, etc, etc.

That’s practically a dream scenario for any Newco entity looking to establish itself quickly at the top of the Scottish game.

What would happen when we gained promotion through the leagues and rejoined the SPL or would we refuse to do that in perpetuity? What would be our future while the entity dominated the SPL?

Are you sure you’ve thought this through?

It is abundantly clear that Scottish Football is rigged and until something is done to stop the riggin, continuing to pay to watch is doing the same as before and expecting a different result. Yup insanity.

Now if certain changes were introduced and other things happened like Oldco being stripped of their titles and the SFA changed the refereeing to make it an accountable service and licensing rules were properly and transparently applied and Newco were told there would be additional penalties on an increasing scale for unacceptable behaviour (and define the songs that cause it), maybe then, just maybe I’d think sufficient curbs had been out on Newco to accept them back. But I’d be happier if they learned the hard way about behaving by enduring the full consequences of misbehaving.

But allowing them back in on the basis of the SPL proposals is insanity.

Loved Keevins on Snyde explaining how newco must enter the SPL because there is no precedent here and Rangers aren’t members of the SFL because its a separate league. Rangers liquidated are dead Hugh, they aren’t members of ANY league. As such they should do what any new club wishing to play league football would do, apply for membership of the bottom tier. I had already decided ages ago that if the Huns were let off with minimal punishment for a massive crime, I would have no interest in Scottish Football. What Celtic FC does or doesn`t do might affect my feeling for the Club but it would not affect my decision to be finished with Scottish Football.

In short, I would rather Celti FC ceased to exist than to be complicit in the continuation of Rangers.

Celtic were very slow in acting when the ten called a meeting without us being invited. When the meeting was called Celtic must have known that they were alone in this League. There will be no Aberdeen siding with us,nor Hibernian,Nor Dundee Utd.These would be the three that may have said no to this meeting, but They went and cast their vote along with the other seven, so we are on our lonesome.

As I said Celtic are on their own,We, the supporters are the only people that can help in this battle of wills,40-50 years ago there would have been mass rallys, where ideas would be thrown back and forth, now there are no meeting places, just forums where there is a lot of inane chat, suggestions that are thrown back and forth, but no action, plenty of suggestions but no action.

I may be the wrong person to suggest there has been an Idea thrown in the mix tonight that would certainly get the wrongdoings that are happening in Scottish Football to a world stage, but it would be a big ask from our Supporters,That is if we are lucky enough to get into the final,is to withdraw our support, refuse to attend that game. The World of football supporters would certainly be asking why.

It’s a big ask,but I think it would certainly bring attention to our plight here in Scotland.
