Get them ready to run through walls for you, Brendan

Managers often have the task of focussing players’ attention on the next game, instead of an important subsequent game a few days later, but Brendan Rodgers has an additional task in this respect right now.

You only need to speak to a fellow Celtic fan this week to understand what’s on all of our minds.  Two games over the next four days will make a significant impression on the season, but there is no certainty what the squad will look like when the second match takes place.  The closure of the transfer window in a little over 48 hours will loom just as large as Sunday’s league encounter with Newco.

This is where the manager earns his wages.  While tomorrow’s game against Suduva should present a straightforward challenge, you and I remember another Scottish team, no longer with us, going out of Europe to Lithuanian opposition just months after competing in the Uefa Cup Final.

Get them ready to run through walls for you, Brendan.

In order for there to be a second cycle, there needs to be investment in the squad.

Or is Lawell hoping Karamoko and his pals bring home the bacon in the second cycle?

  2. Edwin Van der Sar could replace Lawwell. He has done well at Ajax who have similar challenges to us and a similar turnover and fan expectation.

He is very well respected within the game and would bring a wealth of knowledge that Lawwell does not have including, but not limited to Marketing and player understanding.

We really need to start the search now for a new CEO.

And why would you do anything else

Its football…a pastime, a leisure activity, something to be ENJOYED in our spare time away from our daily chores.

Any one who takes it so seriously that it upsets them has a problem

Mate, I have a problem, this shambles upsets me.

Supported Celtic for 50 odd years. The one constant in my life. Celtic and supporting “us” has given me my first holiday abroad, first trip outside Glasgow without the parents. I could go on suffice to say the fortunes, successes and failures of the club affects my happiness. It is after all my passion.

My old dear is 80 odd, she’ll be happy if we win tonight and delighted if we put them back in their box.

Allowing them to creep from the crypt will upset her and me big time.

I suppose it all depends on our definition of “upsets ”

I wont be happy if/when we “fail ” on or off the pitch….but life always goes on. There is always another day..another game to win.

Ranting and raving on the internet doesn’t change anything…other than ones blood pressure maybe

    Upset, huh ?

Here’s a definition: make (someone) unhappy, disappointed, or worried.

synonyms: distress, trouble, perturb, disturb, discompose, unsettle, disconcert, discountenance, dismay, disquiet, worry, bother, inconvenience, agitate, fluster, throw, ruffle, unnerve, shake, frighten, alarm, anger, annoy, irritate, vex, irk, fret, pester, harass, torment, plague, hurt, grieve.

    ================================

Yeah, pretty much all of the above for me.

Now this particular chapter has upset me as it shows a dereliction by someone. To allow the Celtic to go into such a reverse, when everything was so rosy, really takes some doing.

The support are groping around just now trying to find some solid believable information. None is forthcoming and there are loads to fill the gap with further jaundiced guff on the eve of Sunday’s marker game.

Here is one fact: a failure to prepare is preparing to fail and a failure in leadership. Suppose that’s two :-)

  9. BCW – Yes I do.

When we were winning our league we had to shut down an area of our stadium…..

When hiring a new manager during that period he went for an unkown name ………..

When trying to attract McGinn , PL did not make him feel wanted – key in any players wishes.

PL has done some very good work at Celtic but the time has come for him to step aside.

  10. I think we all know our model. We all get “the strategy”. The issue here is one of preparation. We’re about to lose our top striker and CB and we’ve no replacements. Brendan is no Ronny and will not put up with Lawwell. BR will go imo, if not Sunday then at the end of the season.

Sorry I hit the post button to soon……..

Ranting and raving on the net doesn’t change a thing huh ? Au contraire, nowadays the net and (still) the wider media has become the most effective tool for change. Even when the thing being changed shouldn’t.

  12. OK let’s assume we are at the mercy of mercenaries and Moussa was ‘always going to go’ that end of year 2 or 3 is a realistic point of transfer, that Boyata is a similar and should expect that post world cup might be ‘expected to go, that Odsonne is seen as Moussa’s replacement the following questions remain valid:

What was the recruitment planning to cover the POSSIBLE movement of Boyata?

What was the recruitment planning to cover the POSSIBLE movement of Dembele?

What was the recruitment planning to replace Edoward who was replacing Dembele?

What was the recruitment planning to replace Armstrong?

What was the recruitment planning to replace Roberts?

What does Congerton do all day and does he have any pre-planned options/targets/lists?

If he does, why have none of these intelligence sources resulted in new recruits?

Are we to believe that 21 year old McKenna was a ‘top target’?

Are we satisfied that our player recruitment PLANNING is appropriate to our model and fit for business?

Will we be stronger after this window or not?

Henrik nearly got me when he outran two Killie players from halfway and then dummied GM and left him on his erchie before stroking the ball into the net in LC final.

Truly beautiful , mesmerising goal I can still picture . What a feeling that was, absolutely brilliant hat-trick from the kok.

  14. PL should be offered a role as a NED, because he can still add some value , however he is not the best we can have in place as our CEO.

  15. I’m a wee bit concerned that all the transfer speculation will have an adverse impact on what are two big games for us in the next few days.

BR should be focusing on winning these two games with a settled squad. Instead he’s probably trying to bring players in while having no idea what current players will still be available for tonight and Sunday. The players are probably talking about what’s going on in training. It’s extremely poor management from our top brass.

  16. Frambo11 – the well might be running dry if the results of the development/reserve team are any reflection. I don’t think there are many coming through that’ll make the grade.

So it’ll need to be solved by investing in good players. Does anybody have any belief now that that’ll happen?

  18. Has anybody else considered that this nightmare recruitment has happened under the watch of Lee Congerton?

  19. @DUMBHOY

Planning for this summer was concluded in January. given that no team has ever had 4 qualifying rounds and made the CL, and that our first round was during the World Cup, and that the English window closed early – we did our business in january.

    > What was the recruitment planning to cover the POSSIBLE movement of Boyata?

There wasn’t one, because in Jan Boyata said he was staying.

    > What was the recruitment planning to cover the POSSIBLE movement of Dembele?

Again, in January Moussa was staying until Jan 2019, or the following summer.

In huge part due to the English transfer window.

    > What was the recruitment planning to replace Edoward who was replacing Dembele?

    > What was the recruitment planning to replace Armstrong?

none. he was a squad player last year.

    > What was the recruitment planning to replace Roberts?

Lewis Morgan. Roberts was a squad player last year who we had on loan.

What does Congerton do all day and does he have any pre-planned options/targets/lists?

    > If he does, why have none of these intelligence sources resulted in new recruits?

They have. We signed players in January (including 2 centre halves) which is what we needed base don the information we had.

    > Are we to believe that 21 year old McKenna was a ‘top target’?

    No.

    > Are we satisfied that our player recruitment PLANNING is appropriate to our model and fit for business?

    Yes, very very much.

The real part of that question is whether our business model could survive this transfer window – which is the perfect storm.

    > Will we be stronger after this window or not?

Not. We were never ever ver going ot be stronger. It’s why we did our business in january.

  20. The CEO executes our strategy.

Our strategy appears to be a pragmatic use of talented youngsters being bought, borrowed or built at home and turned into EPL / European signings. Some may stay for a bit longer than a usual 2-3 year cycle and we have a core of mainstays (typically scottish) to retain a level of continuity.

We also try and maximise our revenue (in face of crap TV money) streams elsewhere (hotel, sponsorship, etc).

The next CEO will follow that same strategy.

I care little for Peter Lawell as no board / CEO has featured at all in my love affair with Celtic down the years but surely the need for a bogeyman now loses sight that his successor will continue with executing the same, with possibly a few personal differences (less Man City reliant and a poorer negotiatior perhaps).

    Am I missing something ?
