Get them ready to run through walls for you, Brendan

635

Managers often have the task of focussing players’ attention on the next game, instead of an important subsequent game a few days later, but Brendan Rodgers has an additional task in this respect right now.

You only need to speak to a fellow Celtic fan this week to understand what’s on all of our minds.  Two games over the next four days will make a significant impression on the season, but there is no certainty what the squad will look like when the second match takes place.  The closure of the transfer window in a little over 48 hours will loom just as large as Sunday’s league encounter with Newco.

This is where the manager earns his wages.  While tomorrow’s game against Suduva should present a straightforward challenge, you and I remember another Scottish team, no longer with us, going out of Europe to Lithuanian opposition just months after competing in the Uefa Cup Final.

Get them ready to run through walls for you, Brendan.

  1. Brendan wanted 4 signings Centre Half, Right Back, Midfileder and Striker.

Of the 4 we got one Odsonne.

On the other 3 Celtic screwed up ; or more specifically Lawwell nickel and dimed on fee/wages that all 3 targets went elsewhere.

We have had the Boyata saga since then which I cannot see ending well for club or player. Lawwell is not fully to blame for this one —- but is the root cause based on above. Surely to god the CEO and Manager are on speaking terms ——and I don’t mean talking at each other.

I wrote almost 2 weeks ago from the transfer window close. Still nothing —-apart some young OZ guy who is rightly behind MJ. We have circa 48 hours to turnaround the damage of effectively 3 months of inaction by our CEO.

We have been here many times with Lawwell and I do not expect it to be a happy ending. We will exit the window with a team / Squad that has been weakened against the wishes of the manager.

Run through brick walls ; you are having a laugh with this inane nonsense. Progressive football clubs invest. Hibs , Rangers ( to give them their official name as recognise by the club ) are showing them how it’s done.

    forget about Brick walls and identify the number one reason why the treble cup winning feeling in May is oh so different today. It’s down to one man ——Lawwell;

Paul67 if it’s not Lawwell can you offer your view to who is responsible ???

  2. I hope that Celtic are part of the discussions about the future of Moussa, in that we want to keep him, and, devlop him further, however for me. the down side is his injury record, a lot of hamstring injuries for a young guy.

As we watched the teams run out the cry was “whose that” when a new player was in our ranks, wee laggy skied an early penalty Dixie style over the bar early doors in a 2-2 game, another what could have been night.

right i don’t want to start a fight but i thought he was LUGGY.I was there that night .could not remember that.

right i just looked it up in a celtic book which could have been written by a relation of that ginger heided numpty who shouted” GAES THE BAW GAES THE BAW.”you know he replaced the fat guy who replaced the wizard of that place just past CASTLEMILK.

ok enough messing .it’s on page 24.

my wife says if i start talking in riddles like this i can get to TONTINE out of GODGE.

  4. The hands cant hit what the eyes cant see on

What a transfer window so far. If you asked a Sevco fan to write the script for us, he would come close to what is transpiring now. The only addition would be that BR walks away as well.

  5. If Moussa is sold I give up, I really do.

Is there a worse managed club in the UK than us? To have such a financial advantage and leave the window significantly weaker than at the start takes some doing, it really does.

Time for Peter Lawwell to go. Sorry Paul, I know he’s your mate, but he is well past his sell by date, and is now actively damaging the club.

Got to love the ole CQN deflection mode – its all the MSM’s fault!

Until minutes later the manager confirmed the player was not training a day before an important European tie to have discussions about his future. And no, you don’t miss training on a day like this to talk about a new deal. And how dare the big bad MSM talk about it.

Seriously, put the irrelevant MSM away, cancel your Daily Record subscription, and appraise the transfer window we’ve had and the effect on CL qualifying.

  7. Saw an article the other day in which Michael Owen said in the last few years of his career he was unable to give everything when he played, he could feel his muscles starting to tear as soon as he started to make those runs that put him in the limelight.

Looks like Moussa will go sooner rather than later, hope those big hamstrings don’t ruin his career.

Thankfully Odsonne looks like a more than capable replacement.

  8. The hands cant hit what the eyes cant see on

And it was oh so predictable. We have been here with MON, GS and NL.

As an aside, seems like both GS and NL think Sevco are much improved/will provide more of a challenge:

  9. ITALIABHOY

Moussa was always going to leave , think he is in the category of if we get a good offer he can go . Frustrating, yes , not sure we can blame Peter Lawwell.

BR on @MDembele_10: “Moussa & his representatives were speaking to the club today. He’s not a player we want to lose. He’s a phenomenal talent. He’s not going to be here forever. Like a lot of the European boys, they develop at a great club and look to move on.”

  11. Dembele leaving isn’t the issue. Dembele leaving in the last 2 days of the transfer window and no replacement lined up is a huge issue.

  12. The hands cant hit what the eyes cant see on

    @ BORGO67 on 29TH AUGUST 2018 2:09 PM

You don’t sell him on the eve of a European qualifier and with a game against Sevco following at the weekend.

I agree that Dembele was always going to leave but it is only worth selling if we replace him and try and build upon receiving what (in all likelihood) will be a record transfer fee for us.

However, we sold Armstrong and didn’t replaced him. Roberts left and we brought in guys that have potential but are nowhere near his level at present, so what do you think will happen if we sell Dembele? In all likelihood, very little.

    Bobby Murdoch’s shoes…

I said ‘there is time yet’ and will not get myself in to a lather until the window closes (if at all!).

I will say this however, Peter Lawell’s position will be intenable if he doesn’t pull a rabbit out the hat. For the record I have never once said that during his tenure as Celtic CEO.

By ‘rabbit’ I do not mean a squirrel in the form of a new contract for Dembele. It would surprise me not if his agent is planting stories in the French press whilst negotiating a new contract. Then again, I don’t see why Dembele would miss training to be there ahead of 2 big games. These guys train for a few hours a day. I epild have thought discussions on a new deal could be arranged at a time convenient to everyone.

  14. Gary 67

Agree, shambolic planning.Everybody seems to talk a good game when it comes to the reality it is clearly failing.

  15. The stench in here…bit of ammonia, damp cotton and chicken soup. This is our business model; buy low, sell high. Being a big fish in a backwater league with tiny TV revenues, the actuaries will have analysed the fugazi out of it all. Patently the CL is too grand. EL is a nice have. SPL is workable. Yet as irrational as the most fervent of us, I’ll also lose it if the next two games go tits up (more ammonia…)

  16. Odsonne is Dembele’s replacement, however if he goes and no one else comes in then that is worrying

  17. JIMMYNOTPAUL on 29TH AUGUST 2018 1:18 PM

French press reporting, Moussa’s agent in talks with Dortmund!!

    Hopefully more nonsense.

    GLENDALYSTONSILS on 29TH AUGUST 2018 1:50 PM

Moussa’s agent is in Dortmund for talks and also at Parkhead

Must have one of them Star Trek ‘beam me up Scotty’ thingies.

    Hmmmm.

A wee twist on words there.

Anyway, if anyone thinks top players have only one representative these days, then they don’t understand how agents work in the modern game.

  18. Dembele can not be sold regardless of talk about record fees and respecting players wish. We need to have a plan of succession. Sell Dembele when we’ve scouted and signed his replacement next summer. Lawwell should be kicked down the London road if Dembele goes this transfer window.

  19. Borgo67,

What makes you think Eddie is his replacement? Eddie is his partner, not his replacement.

The squad is being gutted in front of our eyes, it’s beyond scandalous.

My Celtic shares are worth 5 times what I paid for them! Woohoo! Give the SSM his bonus!

  22. We may come out of this window weakened.

Our dismal showing in Europe cost us a financial windfall.

I prefer this over another group stage of severe beatings and our international stock plummeting .

Our team and coaching are not up to champions league standards.

So the selling of a star player to make up shortfall so the board can continue with their profit above team strategy would not surprise.

  23. ITALIABHOY

I agree they looked sensational together in those first couple of games .

Thought it was just accepted that Moussa would move , if it hadn’t been for injuries he would be gone by now, and Odsonne was here to replace him and then move himself in a couple of years. Is that not how we do business now? Same goes for Olivier Ntcham.

I haven’t got angry at a Celtic board since we failed to capitalise on Seville. I accepted their position and moved on. Maybe I’ve lost my passion .

  24. !!Bada Bing!! on 29th August 2018 2:22 pm

  27. Regarding Moussa, I’ll be sad to see him go. I do think it would be the right thing to sell him for the right offer. Edouard was signed as his replacement after all but we’d really need to bring somebody else in as well. 2 recognised strikers isn’t enough even for a team that generally plays 1 up top.

We do have a duty to let these guys move on. We sell ourselves as a stepping stone to the top of Europe and we need to reassure future players they can go when the time is right.

It’s rubbish but it’s modern football.

  28. Paul Gascoigne has just turned up at Celtic Park with 12 cans, a fishing rod, a blanket and a KFC bargain bucket, claiming to be a friend of Peter Lawwell.

  29. the glorious balance sheet on 29th August 2018 1:13 pm

Lyon, Marseille and Sevilla unless I’m very much mistaken, none of these clubs are in the CL this season.

So if any of this trio of clubs (forgive the biscuit pun) sign any of our key players this week, that kind of puts to bed the nonsense about needing CL football to attract upcoming players.

    ___

Sorry but Lyon are in the CL.

Secondly, the other clubs in question play in bigger leagues and therefore have bigger revenue than Celtic.

Sevilla announced a turnover 212 million euros in income in their last accounts. Marseille (owned by a wealthy benefactor) turned over 132 million euros.

Celtic’s turnover was around 90 million pounds. They are literally and figuratively in a different league.

  30. I was surprised there wasn’t a big offer for MD from the EPL this summer, the French clubs will offer / pay a lot less for him than West Ham etc. Was there not talk of 30-40 million at the end of last season?

Like all decent players, he will have clauses in his contract where if an offer comes in over a set value he is allowed to consider it. If that has been set as low as 10-15 million then more fool us.
